What's the best vegetarian or vegan meal you've had in a restaurant?

I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I often eat vegetarian/vegan meals and I've read so many depressing stories on here lately about restaurants not making accommodations for vegetarians that I'd love to hear about some of the times they got it right.

What's the best vegetarian dish that you've been served?

It depends because chains are really generic for vegans (I am one). The best vegan food I've had was in Paris and Amsterdam.

I enjoy the lentil ragu at ask italian. Wagamama is great for vegan food, a lot of asian places ate good for vegans.

At a pub once I had a stone baked pizza with roasted butternut squash and pesto topping.

GBK do a good selection of burgers using beyond meat but it's their bean burger I really like.

The use of "vegetarian/vegan meals" bothers me because it implies that there's a certain type of special food that is considered meat-free.
If I was hungry, I'd probably find a plate of chips and beans absolutely the best meal ever.

I like Ottolenghi. It’s the only place I never order meat because I know I’ll be disappointed and get food envy at the vegetarians.

Love The Green Olive vegan café in Anglesey. Anything there is lovely.

EggInANest · 10/09/2023 13:20

Anything that is naturally vegan / veggie.

Aubergine parmigiana
Masala Dosa
Spaghetti a la Norma
Channa or Makani dahl
etc

EmpressaurusOfCats · 10/09/2023 13:21

I had an incredible veggie Caesar salad at a restaurant by the Seine last weekend. That’s definitely my standout meal.

ZZGirl · 10/09/2023 13:37

I hear options at Dishoom are great

BarbaraofSeville · 10/09/2023 13:53

A pizza in Gozo that had fried potatoes, olives, capers, peppers, herbs and tomatoes on. I didn't even notice it didn't have cheese on it until DP pointed out that my pizza was 'chips and salad flavour'.

Plus anything from Prashad or its casual indian street food bar offshoot, Bundobust. Especially the vada pav.

You can get great vegetarian and vegan food but just have to avoid places that work on meat being an essential component of a meal, eg French, traditional British

Anything that is naturally vegan/veggie.
This is nearly what I was trying to say.

Middle eastern, italian and indian tend to be good.
Exclusively vegetarian restaurants are usually good.

I think I’m a pleb but my death row meal would be kare buruso ramen (maybe spelled wrong) from Wagamama

Charlattanus23 · 10/09/2023 15:36

Freshly made ribbon pasta with pine nuts and basil pesto. Many years ago at a little place in Newcastle that has long since closed.

Also, boringly, gorgeous freshly baked breads with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip.

(And am I allowed to cheat slightly and mention the amazing silken tofu blackcurrant cheesecake that was once served up at a potluck dinner at university? Looking back, I'm in awe, as this was the late 1980s...)

Imam biyaldi, I had it on Naxos in a taverna up in the hills under a huge tree.

hazelnutlatte · 10/09/2023 15:53

I can't exactly remember what I had but it was something with artichoke from Cafe Paradiso in Cork, Ireland. My husband had something with mushrooms and it was the best meal out either of us had ever eaten.
I've tried several upmarket veggie restaurants in the UK since and nothing else has come close.

CremeEggThief · 10/09/2023 15:53

There used to be a fab mainly vegetarian restaurant in Bristol called Glasnost and the standard of food there was absolutely incredible, in my opinion.
I'm afraid I haven't found anything to match it since...

So many but my stand outs - Vegab in Krakow
Minh Hien in HoI An, Vietnam - Woodlands Hotel, Udupi, India

I am not vegan (DS and his GF are) Vantra Vegan in Soho does wonderful food.

toastofthetown · 10/09/2023 16:03

Land in Birmingham is incredible. An all vegetarian (it may be vegan though I’m not sure) tasting menu. Eight courses, all of which are unique, well balanced and crafted. I’m vegetarian, and have been with many meat-eaters and everyone has been blown away every time.

This is from the menu last time I went and I haven’t stopped thinking about it - caramelised onion, dashi, chive oil, chive croutons, soy caviar, spring onion.

One pub in Hertfordshire served up a beetroot burger. You could not tell the difference and dh whose a ‘needs to have meat with every dinner’ type was actually impressed.

Enderunicorn · 10/09/2023 16:17

I am vegetarian, one that stands out for me recently was at Hawksmoor ironically (it's a steak restaurant), they only had one veggie meal so you get what you're given but it was delicious, a cheese/spelt grain/mushroom/butter deliciousness. It was so good that I tried to make it at home, it was crap.

KohlaParasaurus · 10/09/2023 16:25

Injera with a selection of mildly spiced lentil/pea stews at a restaurant in Vancouver. Ridiculously moreish for something so simple.

goldennavy · 10/09/2023 16:38

Gratitude in Venice Beach, LA.
Everything was beyond fabulous.
I'm not vegan or vegetarian but chose to eat there on multiple occasions as it's so good.

Bananasplitlady · 10/09/2023 16:44

A wonderful pasta dish in Venice, very few ingredients, but perfect.
A couple of years ago, Zizzi did a pizza with a green base and it was lovely. Sadly discontinued.
The paneer madras at a local restaurant is consistently pretty great.
