I can't believe people are defending this as the dog is "playing a game" and saying its body language is not aggressive. Why does that matter? The end result is that it is attacking people.

Poor ickle misunderstood massive aggressive dog and naughty owner. 🙄Never mind the people pulled to the ground and mauled.

I was the first to post that idea. Would you like to read my final paragraph again? No defence, no poor ickle dog, my post was really about it being strange attack behaviour, and what an arsehole of an owner it has.

The dog obviously needs to be put down and the owner prosecuted.

I don’t know about others but I’m more saying that it is worse that in his natural non fight/flight state the dog is extremely aggressive either via genetics or being taught to behave that way.

Balloonhearts · 10/09/2023 13:14

@Stroopwaffels Literally no one has said that. In fact the post said the opposite. This is in no way a defence Some moron has been training it to attack like that. And its true, ask any behaviourist, that dog has clearly been taught to do that under the guise of it being a game.

We've an ex police dog in the family, she would jump for the arm exactly like that, release immediately on command. Obviously she was trained formally by someone with half a brain so would never behave like that unless working but the technique is a dead giveaway.

Do you believe then that the owner who trained it should not be held responsible for training it to attack? Its not 'naughty owner' its a crime.

Why don't you actually read what you're commenting on before you post, it'd save you embarrassing yourself.

BelindaBears · 10/09/2023 13:17

These dogs need to be rounded up and confiscated en masse. We don’t tolerate people walking around with guns because of the risk they pose in the hands of dickhead owners, so why are these ok?

kitsuneghost · 10/09/2023 13:27

Dog owner probably thinks the dog is just playful.
They are scum idiots, the lot of them

PrincessOfTigger · 10/09/2023 13:28

They need to be banned ASAP… the government are getting walloped in the next election anyway so they should do the right thing, take the hit and P off the dog owners

saymynamesaymy · 10/09/2023 13:06

I take it you've never been to Birmingham then. That's what most of it looks like.
Hate it here, absolutely shithole

I think you must live in a dodgy part tbh, all cities have them, I used to live in the dodgy end of Wandsworth but that doesn’t mean the whole of London is a shithole. I am currently staying with friends for the weekend by Highbury park, it’s lovely around here and central Birmingham has really impressed me too.

That video is so distressing, the fear those people must have felt 😣 I always cross the road with my children if I see a big dog coming along, I couldn’t care less about hurting the feelings of the owner.

saymynamesaymy · 10/09/2023 13:40

@fioritura there are some nice areas of course, but the vast majority are a shithole. Most people from bham will agree with me

Lonelycrab · 10/09/2023 13:43

@Waystation signed.

SiblingFights · 10/09/2023 13:59

God that video, so terrifying.

Kinsters · 10/09/2023 13:59

"An 11-year-old girl ran past the dog as it was being walked by its owner in Bordesley Green, when she was bitten."

Is this just me or does it read quite like blaming the victim in this statement from the police?

Sorry for the sun link, I googled for the police statement as the link above is broken and this is all that came up.

Moment XL Bully dog mauls girl, 11, before savaging man in ferocious rampage

THIS is the horrifying moment a XL Bully dog mauled a girl before savaging a man in a ferocious rampage as terrified crowds fled the area. The distressing video was shared on social media and shows…

Works for me Confused Try this. It's accessible from the front page of the West Midlands Police website.

Investigation launched after three people bitten by dog in Birmingham | News | West Midlands Police

We’re investigating after three people were bitten by a dog in Birmingham yesterday (9 September).   An 11-year-old girl ran past the dog as it was being walked by its owner in Bordesley Green, when she was bitten.   Two men intervened but were bitten...

Nope, not working for me.

Kwil · 10/09/2023 14:10

The first person it attacked in the dress was an 11 year old girl

Not a lot else I can do. Try just looking at the West Midlands police home page.

Chicknpan · 10/09/2023 14:21

Hence why these dogs are so dangerous. Savaging people and other animals is normal behaviour for them and they are a banned type of dog (pit bull type) yet they are EVERYWHERE.

What an a absolute joke.

ETA sorry that was in reply to Hollyhocksarenotmessy suggesting this dog was displaying play type behaviour.

I don't expect you to fix it lol. I was just saying why I'd linked to a sun article rather than the police website.

That poor child, she must have been terrified. I hope she doesn't blame herself. I got bit by a greyhound type dog at a dog shelter because I jumped down a hill next to it and I felt so bad that he would now have a note saying he was a biter

megletthesecond · 10/09/2023 14:38

Those dogs and their owners are scum. (And I love dogs I'll even stop when jogging to say hello to nice dogs and owners).
I saw a huge bloke trying to control a bully this summer. He had no chance if it went mental.

Those men who went to the rescue were incredibly brave.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 10/09/2023 14:57

I think you have a good point @Hollyhocksarenotmessy. The dog wasn't doing this to actually attack and kill, he was doing take downs. If he was acting aggressively there would have been fatalities. He has been trained for this. People need to realise when a Labrador looses his shit someone might get hurt; when a Pitbull looses it someone might get killed.

Bananaaa · 10/09/2023 17:29

These dogs are awful. I walked past one recently and it lunged at my toddler in his pushchair. It was on a lead but the owner had to pull it back with all his might to get it not to jump up on my son. Seeing my absolutely horrified expression the owner just laughed and said don’t worry he loves kids!! 😮 They are so powerful and if they want to attack someone there is very little you can do about it.

Thurlarder · 10/09/2023 17:31

These dogs are absolutely vile and I'm sick and tired of apologists bleating "it's the owner not the breed" and "chihuahuas are aggressive too". If a chihuahua attacks you or your child you can kick it into the middle of next week, if one of these monsters does it you've got no chance whatsoever.

If I had a pet lion I claimed was a harmless and loving family pet I doubt anyone would be happy with me merrily walking about with it in public.

Seychal · 10/09/2023 18:16

Our politicians are inept. Nothing will happen unless communities take direct action.

Exactly. Also, when a labrador plays, it chases a ball, when a bully plays, it bites chunks out of your arm. Imagine if this thing was attacking to kill.

I take it as the opposite, 11 year old girl just ran past was doing nothing wrong when she was attacked unprovoked.

MrsGalloway · 10/09/2023 19:03

I agree and don’t find the police statement particularly reassuring. Hopefully it’s just badly drafted but it does read a bit like it was the 11 year old that started it by running and they’ve had a chat with the owner and the dog is ok.

I also understood @Hollyhocksarenotmessy post to mean that in her opinion the dog wasn’t even in attack mode which makes it even more worrying. I don’t know enough about dogs to comment on body language but I do know that dog attacks of this type are often fatal and the dog can be difficult to stop so Hollyhocks comment makes sense to me.
