What's the thing with door wreaths?

Not Christmas wreaths or funeral wreaths but big tinselly, glittery wreaths, often with fake flowers.

I took a bus trip to a neighbouring town a couple of days ago and due to being higher up than normal, got a good look into a lot of front gardens. I saw maybe 20-30 front doors that had these random tacky wreaths on them. No apparent context like "Happy 40th Sharon" or anything.

Is this a current home decor trend? This was East of England but DH is.a lorry driver and said he's seen these in other parts of the country.

I know it's none of my business how people decorate their own homes, just curious as to why this seems to be a thing.

All on the front doors of the ‘live, laugh, love’ pumpkin spiced latte brigade.

ItSoundsLikeADrag · 09/09/2023 18:19

It’s a recent thing, another American import, dressing the door each season.
Some people are trying to reduce consumption and save the planet, others are sticking plastic on the front of their houses. I find it baffling.

Midlands town and there are loads within certain streets. I must admit some of them look lovely but not sure where the trend has come from and grown so quickly!

I think they're pretty. And like you said, not your house!

OddBoots · 09/09/2023 18:23

You could just as well ask 'what's the thing with hanging baskets'?

Turdibacious · 09/09/2023 18:24

None of them were even what I would call seasonal though. Not even Hallow'een. A particularly hideous one was sort of mauve fake flowers with mauve tinsel and glittery bits. Neither summery or autumny. I don't get it.

I have one! Well I have different ones for different seasons. If you think they're tacky thats why you don't have one. 😀

PickleDig · 09/09/2023 18:25

I think they look nice. No need to be rude about it. I have a few I have made/chosen with my kids, it brightens my front door (and hides the cracks).

Turdibacious · 09/09/2023 18:26

@OddBoots

Well hanging baskets generally have real plants in them which is good for pollinators etc. Maybe the plastic wreath people also have fake grass.

Sorry double post!

LylaLee · 09/09/2023 18:28

What's this thing of painting your front door a colour that's not black or white?

What's this thing of having bathrooms not in white?

What's this thing of sticking paper on your walls, often with patterns and pictures.

What's this thing of putting magnets on your fridge?

What's this thing of having flowers in your garden instead of carrots and cabbage?

Turdibacious · 09/09/2023 18:30

@PickleDig

I don't think I was particularly rude. I made it clear it's just my opinion and obviously the people that have them think otherwise. I'm just curious as to why it suddenly seems to be a thing.

@LylaLee

I suppose when those things first came into fashion, those questions may well have been asked.

I like them. I have a cool spooky Halloween one and I buy a Christmas one every year.

i am not organised enough to do all year though. A florist near me does the most beautiful wreaths I have ever seen / but they are pricy and I’m not sure how long they last (although I might get one this Christmas 🎄)

Redlarge · 09/09/2023 18:39

I live in a very old cottage and hang a wreath with dried flowers on on my door. Its in keeping with the house and garden and i love it.im also a bit woo and witchy and the wreath has significance. It is so far from tacky as riding on a bus and judging other people's doors that they look after and pay for.

MorningNoonAndNight · 09/09/2023 18:39

It's the same where I am, well, one street is. A row of town houses and at least every second one has some sort of wreath on the front door. I don't get it either.

Bellyblueboy · 09/09/2023 18:40

I confess I dont Understand the green hanging balls you see everywhere - but maybe I just have no taste (or I’m really unfashionable - which I am!!)

VeridicalVagabond · 09/09/2023 18:46

My daughter makes seasonal ones out of cuttings from our garden and the woods, dried fruit, flowers etc. She's done it for years, since she was very little, her gran showed her how to make them and still makes her the base hoops from a tree in her garden.

I don't much care if it's now seen as an American import, tacky, "live laugh love" adjacent, or if it makes you think I want the planet to melt. My kid makes them for me so I think they're the bees knees.

Its pretty and they have pride in their home.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 09/09/2023 18:50

Also real ones made of the right flowers can help deter insects IE lavender

Turdibacious · 09/09/2023 18:51

@Redlarge and @VeridicalVagabond

I totally get the ones made from natural materials, especially if you or a loved one has hand made them.

I more mean the plastic tinselly ones.

I hadn't really seen them till a couple of days ago and wondered what it was all about.

I can understand homes in rural villages having them for Easter or Harvest Festival, and random other people having Halloween ones, but apart from that and Christmas, they are buttock-clenchingly twee not my cup of tea at all.

piscofrisco · 09/09/2023 18:54

I like em. I've got an Easter one, the obvs Christmas and also a nice autumn one. What's the issue?
