What's the thing with door wreaths?

Not Christmas wreaths or funeral wreaths but big tinselly, glittery wreaths, often with fake flowers.

I took a bus trip to a neighbouring town a couple of days ago and due to being higher up than normal, got a good look into a lot of front gardens. I saw maybe 20-30 front doors that had these random tacky wreaths on them. No apparent context like "Happy 40th Sharon" or anything.

Is this a current home decor trend? This was East of England but DH is.a lorry driver and said he's seen these in other parts of the country.

I know it's none of my business how people decorate their own homes, just curious as to why this seems to be a thing.

I’ve seen a lot in Suffolk

LadyBird1973 · 09/09/2023 19:33

'Have you spent much time contemplating door wreaths?'

Judgement about other people's perceived poor decor choices, goes back years on MN. Anyone who's been around here a long time will remember the 'twigs and pebbly shit' threads, bitching about people who like fairy lights and leather sofas!

I think people use them as decorations, OP.

AngelinaFibres · 09/09/2023 19:41

The Range ,Dunelm, White Company and Next as well as independent shops sell them so it's easy for people to pick one up and put it on their door. I've been doing them for our community shop noticeboard for 10 years. Mine are a combination of real foliage and fake bits. I change them every month as the seasons progress. They are an American thing but my DIL is American so that's fine by me.They need regular updating to look good but they don't offend me. I'd rather someone cared enough about the front of their house to decorate it rather than leaving a stained mattress outside.

It’s a recent thing, another American import, dressing the door each season.
Some people are trying to reduce consumption and save the planet, others are sticking plastic on the front of their houses. I find it baffling.

Stop blaming everything on Americans FFS and take some responsibility for homegrown British ideas. 🙄

AceofPentacles · 09/09/2023 19:42

I have them to mark the seasons change because I am a pagan and celebrate then

My daughter makes seasonal ones out of cuttings from our garden and the woods, dried fruit, flowers etc. She's done it for years, since she was very little, her gran showed her how to make them and still makes her the base hoops from a tree in her garden.

I don't much care if it's now seen as an American import, tacky, "live laugh love" adjacent, or if it makes you think I want the planet to melt. My kid makes them for me so I think they're the bees knees.

Aw this is lovely 🥰 ❤️

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 09/09/2023 19:46

I love them. Don't have one right now, but they are so pretty. 💓

RachaelAnn · 09/09/2023 19:48

On the front doors of the kind of people who go to Asda to meet Stacey Solomon and buy all of her cheap tat.

Actually that's quite harsh. I don't mind a wreath. SS though 💀

AngelinaFibres · 09/09/2023 19:51

I made one for my friends summer house wall at Christmas as she was having a party . It 3.5' wide. Made from cuttings from her garden and Christmas bits and bobs. I love wreaths. They make me very happy.

People over consume every day. Look at the population. Reducing consumption isn't limited to none food stuff. A wreath brought out each year is nothing compared to daily over consumption.

V pretty!

TheClitterati · 09/09/2023 19:52

I have a Halloween wreath that goes up with other Halloween decorations.

And a Christmas one I made from broken & discarded toys & stuff which I love and my kids beg me not to put up (but secretly love).

But yes it's been a trend thing for several years now. Many ideas on Pinterest etc.

I keep meaning to make an Easter one but haven't done that yet.

On the contrary it is your business.
You were confronted be these monstrosities whilst out minding your own business, enjoying a bus journey. They took away your enjoyment of the journey.

They’ll no doubt decorate the house with those tacky outside lights in a few weeks.

It's tacky. Like wrapping your day in a bow during the festive period.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 09/09/2023 20:10

The only problem with loads of people having permanent wreaths throughout the year is that they then become ubiquitous and lose their appeal, which would be a shame at special times of the year.

Tara24 · 09/09/2023 20:14

It has to be an improvement on the awful ribbons I kept seeing a few years ago. The ones which were meant to look like an unwrapped gift.

wordler · 09/09/2023 20:14

I’m in the US - some people here do seasonal ones they change so

Valentines Day
Spring / Easter
4th July
Summer ( some skip this one)
Autumn
Halloween
Thanksgiving (or put the Autumn one back up)
Christmas

I think wrapping every day in a bow seems like a really good idea .
