What's the thing with door wreaths?

Not Christmas wreaths or funeral wreaths but big tinselly, glittery wreaths, often with fake flowers.

I took a bus trip to a neighbouring town a couple of days ago and due to being higher up than normal, got a good look into a lot of front gardens. I saw maybe 20-30 front doors that had these random tacky wreaths on them. No apparent context like "Happy 40th Sharon" or anything.

Is this a current home decor trend? This was East of England but DH is.a lorry driver and said he's seen these in other parts of the country.

I know it's none of my business how people decorate their own homes, just curious as to why this seems to be a thing.

Imo cottages with them look good. On anything else just naff. They are in the same vein as having a hanging heart in the window. Its a trend ie without any sense of originality. People follow like sheep. Which is why where I live there are lit of houses suddenly painted a dream grey which makes them look like concrete blocks. Just saying.

HoneyPotts · 09/09/2023 20:24

I’ve not seen them. Does anyone have a pic or a link to them ?

I like them, and I'm thinking of getting one.
It brightens up peoples bus journeys Wink

I like your style.

I have one at Christmas that I buy at the same time as the tree, it’s made from tree foliage and stuff and you can ask them to tie various ribbons etc on to it.
Wouldn’t have one up the rest of the year, only have the one at Christmas because dh likes it, I just find them annoying flapping about when you’re going in and out.
My mum has a really naff Christmas one that’s all tinselly and gaudy, she loves it and hates my boring one - we’re all different!

I like a bus journey. Since COVID and various family deaths other reasons I don't take bus journeys so often these days. This was my first bus journey of more than a few minutes in a few years. I enjoy looking out the window and seeing what is to be seen.

I noticed these wreaths on front doors that I've not previously noticed from street level and wondered what it was all about. Yeah, I think some of them are quite tacky, like the mauve confection I mentioned above but I was more curious about the prevalence of them.

I'm not "judging" people for having them. Just wondering why they do. I have hanging baskets because I think they look pretty, I have a small garden so it lets me grow flowers in a small space which helps pollinators. If someone else thinks their tinsel wreath looks pretty, I'm not going to argue,. As I've said, I'm just curious.

I like making them for my front door. Especially picking things from the garden in autumn and celebrating all of the colours. It's such a nice thing to do, ditto re Halloween, winter and Easter. I think they look nice and are a bit of fun. Here is last autumn. Can't wait for these beautiful colours to return, albeit loving the current heatwave and reminder of what summer might have been!!!

I've got one on my front door. Big hydrangea type flowers, muted autumn colours. It's lovely.

It’s a recent thing, another American import, dressing the door each season.
Some people are trying to reduce consumption and save the planet, others are sticking plastic on the front of their houses. I find it baffling.

^ soooooooo much plastic. Plastic that ends up looking crap as rain/wind/dirt…. ends up in the bin. New piece of plastic tat purchased.

Confusion101 · 09/09/2023 20:36

I'm not a fan of these at all! I think it's hard to get them to look nice. Most people around me are buying cheap ones in the local pound shop and they look tacky as hell. The ones that I've seen done well are absolutely fabulous but they are defo not a trend I'm buying into!

SpaceRaiders · 09/09/2023 20:36

We have one person in our small village who does this. The wreaths change with each season and she does one for Halloween and Easter too. I personally think it’s all a bit naff but each to their own.

Freshair1 · 09/09/2023 20:37

And called them tacky.

confusedmum2023 · 09/09/2023 20:42

I quite like them, not them all but most. I do put stuff up at Easter, Halloween and Christmas. What puts me off getting one is that so many houses in my estate have them so makes it feel a bit like copying. I really love the idea of a spring and autumn one seen some beautiful ones this spring.

Confusion101 · 09/09/2023 20:47

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea because they are tacky 🤣🤣🤣

And called them tacky.

Well, yeah. I think some of the wreaths are tacky but I don't know the householders who may be lovely people. Just as my MIL is a lovely person who just happens to have a collection of scary dolls bought from ads in the Sunday supplements.

All on the front doors of the ‘live, laugh, love’ pumpkin spiced latte brigade.

I've also noticed this too.

LuciferRising · 09/09/2023 21:34

Celebrating the seasons is a very old tradition pre dating christionanity. I wish more people would take the time to observe the passing of the year.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 09/09/2023 21:41

I don't want to speak for the OP. But I think the ones she is referring to are not the ones that mark the passage of the year, but generic, fake flowers that people have up year round. I only recently became aware of them, there is a street near us where someone has a sign outside advertising them, and 4 or 5 houses with them up. Not my thing, but I can see why people want to brighten up their houses.
