What's the thing with door wreaths?

Not Christmas wreaths or funeral wreaths but big tinselly, glittery wreaths, often with fake flowers.

I took a bus trip to a neighbouring town a couple of days ago and due to being higher up than normal, got a good look into a lot of front gardens. I saw maybe 20-30 front doors that had these random tacky wreaths on them. No apparent context like "Happy 40th Sharon" or anything.

Is this a current home decor trend? This was East of England but DH is.a lorry driver and said he's seen these in other parts of the country.

I know it's none of my business how people decorate their own homes, just curious as to why this seems to be a thing.

@piscofrisco

It's not an issue, I was just curious why it's suddenly (to me) so common.

OP you called them random tacky wreaths that's pretty rude really. Not your taste move along.

I like em. I've got an Easter one, the obvs Christmas and also a nice autumn one. What's the issue?

Easter, Christmas and harvest. Great. The rest of the time, they remind me of funeral wreaths.

I think because people-not all people clearly-but some-think they look nice?

LylaLee · 09/09/2023 18:59

I'm het up because I have one.

It's just the same as a vase of artificial flowers.

It cheers me up to look at it.

It probably is tacky, but my income bracket is more home bargains than Harrods, so I'm probably quite tacky in multiple ways.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/09/2023 18:59

I think they're nice. People like to decorate.
Also I hate to break it to you, but about hanging baskets... all the ones on my street are fake.

Candleabra · 09/09/2023 19:00

I love them. My next door neighbour makes a real effort with outside decor, and has lovely wreaths up must of the year round. Xmas obviously, but autumn ones made of beautiful leaves, a spring wreath of flowers etc.
I’m too lazy and creatively challenged myself, but I do like looking at other peoples efforts.

Nah you're grand. If you look at the responses there's more in favour than against. I don't think it's going the way OP hoped. 🤣

LadyEloise1 · 09/09/2023 19:02

I like them. Not all of them though as some can be a bit tacky.

@Redlarge and @VeridicalVagabond

I totally get the ones made from natural materials, especially if you or a loved one has hand made them.

I more mean the plastic tinselly ones.

I hadn't really seen them till a couple of days ago and wondered what it was all about.

What if a loved one has made the plastic one?
Should it then be thrown in the bin and mocked?

KateyCuckoo · 09/09/2023 19:08

Oooh you've just reminded me to look for one! I wanted one last year for autumn and let it too late. Thanks OP!

PS. Yes you were rude.

Rockandchips · 09/09/2023 19:10

I have a christmas one and saw a really big one in TKMaxx but it was £40 and I thought its too expensive and so nice it might get nicked. The easter ones were lovely too. I would have one and hanging baskets but as I say I live on a busy street and stuff has been taken from my front garden before.😪

rulerp · 09/09/2023 19:12

I have one on my door! I have different ones for different seasons. I also have artificial grass and fake plants 😂

Gazelda · 09/09/2023 19:15

There's a street in an uber-chic town near me that has the most amazing wreaths on every door over Easter. They've been doing it for years.

If it's good enough for them it's good enough for me.

Mind you, you'd think me terribly tacky OP because I've had some decorative flip flops hanging from my door all summer. I get loads of cheery comments from passers-by.

Turdibacious · 09/09/2023 19:15

I didn't hope it to go any way, hence posting in Chat, not AIBU. I asked a question, the answer seems to be "' 'Cos I like it".

Fairy nuff, not my thing but if it's yours crack on.

I am definitely more Home Bargains than Harrods BTW. I was just curious about something I wasn't previously aware of.

Thanks for all the replies.

All on the front doors of the ‘live, laugh, love’ pumpkin spiced latte brigade.

SO accurate!

They seem to belong to the fake grass and grey interiors here.

Chippy4me · 09/09/2023 19:22

I’ve never heard of this but I can imagine they look quite nice.

I think it’s nice to be proud of your home and decorate it to make it look nice.

I have fake grass because of long term health worries. I either have the energy to make dinner or mow the lawn. I put in a fake lawn in the front garden so that I would have one less thing to worry about.

Glad to be judged.

There are probably people looking at your life saying 'imagine being so naff as to wear fabric that's not silk or cotton or wool!' tinkly laugh.

Turdibacious · 09/09/2023 19:22

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea

It depends. In my case the answer would be "That's nice dear", stick it up for few days, then "Let's put this away safely so it doesn't get damaged".

Some are tacky looking and some are really nice! I have a beautiful autumn wreath (new this year, waiting to be put up!), a Christmas one, and an Easter wreath... and i have a really tacky halloween one which the kids love 😁 They come out year after year so they are reused and not just put in landfill after one or two seasons.

Bellyblueboy · 09/09/2023 19:29

I recently moved into a neighbourhood with a lot of families - people go all out at Christmas and halloween. I didn’t want to be the spinster with the dark I decorated house so I have got with the programme!!

I have a Halloween door wreath made of skulls and Terracotta pumpkins for round the front door. I have a witch that crashes into the tree in my front garden!!

i go tacky at Halloween and classic at Christmas. It’s great fun.

OP would hate me😂😂😂

Anotherchristianmama · 09/09/2023 19:30

I never understand what is wrong with people liking these things?

Have you spent much time contemplating door wreaths?

Vitriolinsanity · 09/09/2023 19:31

Oh dear. I bought an autumn wreath only this afternoon. I have an Easter one too, which I've had for about 10 years.

I make my Christmas wreath on a birch stick base, which I make myself.

KindleAndCake · 09/09/2023 19:33

I like them, and I'm thinking of getting one.
It brightens up peoples bus journeys Wink
