Would you go to a school reunion?

I'm 48 and we have one coming up, I'm really in two minds about it. I'm only in touch with a couple of people from school and they want to go. I just think it might be a bit cringe. Would you?

Categorically not.

Iloveacurry · 09/09/2023 15:08

Yes I think I would go.

PangramAddict · 09/09/2023 15:09

I went to one a few years ago. It made me feel utterly shit about myself and I wish I hadn't bothered.

Absolutely would. Have been at 20th30th. People are grown up now and it's lovely meeting some you haven't seen in years. I am only in contact with one friend but once she was going l knew l would be fine. We had a great laugh as we remembered our antics...harmless now.
Also our teachers came and l really enjoyed meeting them.
If your friends are going..go!

SkaneTos · 09/09/2023 15:10

Yes, I would probably go to a school reunion.
I feel like a failure in my life right now, though, so I would have to spend the whole event trying ask people about their lives, and dodge questions about my own life.

Snozzlemaid · 09/09/2023 15:11

Nope. I avoided mine.
Have absolutely no desire to see anyone from my school days again.
The photos after showed it was mostly attended by 'that crowd'. They probably wouldn't remember me anyway as I wasn't cool enough for them.

How nice that your teachers attended!
I would love to meet my old teachers again.

CalistoNoSolo · 09/09/2023 15:30

God no. I loathed the various crappy schools I attended. I was always the new girl (dad moved with work lots through my childhood) and then the outsider because my accent was different or too posh. I'm not in touch with anyone from that hellish era of my life.

Needmorelego · 09/09/2023 15:31

I'd quite like to. For a long while I was quite embarrassed by my adult life (crappy low paid job, renting a flat rather than owning etc) so the thought of one horrified me.
But now I have learned I don't give a F what people think. I am curious what some of my classmates have been up to with their lives and there's a few I would love to reunite with.

ginislife · 09/09/2023 15:33

I've organised 3 and I'm friends on FB with about 30 of our year and we have a FB group. It's lovely to catch up with people. Most are very different to how they were at school.

IHateWasps · 09/09/2023 15:35

No. I'd sooner chew my limbs off and pay someone to beat me over the head with it. I have absolutely no interest in what they're all doing now and even less interest in meeting my bullies again.

That said sometimes it can work really well. My Mother attended one about a decade ago and she still meets every 2-3 months or so with about 10 of them.

LittleMissSunshinePants · 09/09/2023 15:35

Don't think I would. I have moved away from school area but when I go back I see a few faces and cringe. I was never very popular at school, had a few friends but never in the cool group. I'd feel like I was 14 again and not good enough!

IHateWasps · 09/09/2023 15:37

With it? With them!

LoraPiano · 09/09/2023 15:39

I have bren to one, and was quite excited about it, but would never go again. It felt less of a nice catch up and lighthearted evening and more of incessant questions and trying to find out about your career, marriage, money etc and place you on a success barometer of how well you are doing compared to them.

never again

bigTillyMint · 09/09/2023 15:39

I went to my first one with one of my closest friends recently - 40 years since we left!
I am also in regular touch with a couple of others, but it was actually lovely to reconnect with others I haven’t really seen since we left.

Handyweatherstation · 09/09/2023 15:40

I went to one after 20 years but haven't gone again. It was okay-ish. Held at the school and there was music and dancing in the main hall. I was struck by how many had never moved away from the area.

It was strange seeing everyone again - the women still looked pretty much the same but most of the men were unrecognisable and were mostly fat and bald. The best part was that the girl who made my life hell apologised to me and said she'd always wanted to say sorry for how she'd bullied me. It was worth going for that.

grafittiartist · 09/09/2023 15:42

I went to one in the old school building- not just my year- everyone welcome.
Loved it! But then I had a happy time at school.

catin8oots · 09/09/2023 15:45

I organised our 25 year primary school one after getting pissed one night and chatting to people on Facebook. It was great. We all got drunk, ate a cheap buffet thing and I finally got to snog Simon Doyle. Everyone one is fat now too 😁

Maybe I'll organise the next one for 40 years.

I certainly wouldn't got to a secondary one!

MrsFairweather · 09/09/2023 15:47

Nothing could persuade me to go to one!

JanesBlond · 09/09/2023 15:47

Probably, but purely because I am really nosey 😅 I also enjoyed school and am happy with how my life has turned out so far, so wouldn’t feel the need to avoid for those reasons.

ToughFuss · 09/09/2023 15:48

Mm maybe.. I had a lot of friends at school, generally got on with most people, but of course I’m not in touch with them all now so it would be nice to see what they’re up to etc now.

Kay286 · 09/09/2023 15:49

Nope really not bothered … the only people I’d want to probably see are the ones that have done interesting adventurous things with their lives - but we all live in different continents now !

There is one for my school next week… most of them going are the scruffs of the school and all still live local anyway so pretty pointless .. I didn’t like them at school and not interested in their lives now.

fetchacloth · 09/09/2023 15:50

No - it would give me the ick.

Berlinlover · 09/09/2023 15:54

I’m not in touch with anyone I went to school with so would have no interest in attending a school reunion.

I can't begin to imagine how utterly devastated they will be when you don't show up. Hmm
