What would you do in London this afternoon?

Me, dh and dd18. We have a train to get from Euston at 5.30. Not sure what we should do - we have backpacks but not big luggage. We were going to wander the south bank but not sure in this heat, so any suggestions gratefully received!

One thing I would certainly do in this heat is avoid the Tube!

NameOutTheBin · 09/09/2023 10:23

I'd find a free museum with air-conditioning

NuffSaidSam · 09/09/2023 10:24

Google the museums/galleries and find out which ones have AC and go there. Extra points if they have a cloakroom, which most do.

Or just ride up and down on the district or Elizabeth line which are actually quite pleasant temperature wise.

Doggymummar · 09/09/2023 10:26

Go to the cinema lovely and cool

C1N1C · 09/09/2023 10:35

Ice cream!

My favourite is Gelupo behind piccadilly circus

BlueKaftan · 09/09/2023 10:36

Find a pub and watch the rugby all day.

TaigaSno · 09/09/2023 10:36

I always love the British Museum!

minipie · 09/09/2023 10:36

Art galleries have a/c (needed to protect the art). Museums hit and miss.

RJnomore1 · 09/09/2023 10:40

We need to get the jubilee line in from Canning Town soon. Hopefully it’s not too bad.

the British museum might be a good idea. Never been and it’s about 15 minutes from Euston? Ice cream definitely!

the cinema would be a shout at home but I don’t want to waste the afternoon in something I can do ten minutes from home. And we are not rugby fans!

thank you all - any other ideas?

Find a good cocktail bar

KnittedJimmyChoos · 09/09/2023 10:48

@NuffSaidSam
Really, that's good to know.
I'd be interested in air quality on the Liz line

RJnomore1 · 09/09/2023 10:48

Tbh I was hoping people would suggest specific bars, cafes etc?

Is Euston near coal drop yard?
Lots of bars and restaurants restaurant around there?

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 09/09/2023 10:51

V&A with a paddle in the pool, then an ice.cream nearby, or Uber boat down the river to Greenwich wander round the museum and ice cream there.

BadgerFace · 09/09/2023 10:54

The British Library is near Euston and has cafes with the most amazing cakes and doughnuts, I was very surprised when I went to an exhibition there recently with DD! Cool building too.

Seven Dials foodcourt for a frozen marg and big pizza slice, then down to Covent Garden for Ice Cream.
You need Ice cream!

I'd skip the South Bank, very busy and chaotic, and be careful with Museums because they are strict on the size of luggage, including backpacks you can bring in - a small one is fine. The British Museum will be heaving. Try the embankment for a walk along perhaps to The Monument.

A cheap place to eat is this place just opposite Euston Station - the toilets are clean as well.

I'd find a shady spot in one of the parks.

placemats · 09/09/2023 10:59

St James Park is lovely to sit in the shade. Look out for the pelicans!

AnnaMagnani · 09/09/2023 11:02

I would find somewhere with airconditioning and stay there.

Yesterday in my sunlight office in London I fainted, spent the morning lying on the floor while everyone else worked round me then went home Blush

British Library is a good shout.

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/09/2023 11:09

From Canning Town, I'd hop on the tube/DLR to Canary Wharf and have a walk along the river (there's usually a pleasant breeze if you head to Canary Riverside). Grab ice cream or snacks from the shops there first. Then either walk to Wapping (Wapping market is on today - it's at Shadwell Basin - usually a jazz band playing and canoe water polo to watch - also very good food stalls) or get the Uber boat if it's too hot.

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/09/2023 11:11

We'd be straight to Hyde Park, to the Serpentine and have a few drinks. Was perfect the last time we did that and was boiling too.
