What would you do in London this afternoon?

Me, dh and dd18. We have a train to get from Euston at 5.30. Not sure what we should do - we have backpacks but not big luggage. We were going to wander the south bank but not sure in this heat, so any suggestions gratefully received!

We need to get the jubilee line in from Canning Town soon. Hopefully it’s not too bad.

the British museum might be a good idea. Never been and it’s about 15 minutes from Euston? Ice cream definitely!

the cinema would be a shout at home but I don’t want to waste the afternoon in something I can do ten minutes from home. And we are not rugby fans!

thank you all - any other ideas?

You also have Victoria and Albert Museum next to British Museum. Worth a visit if you have time.

The Victoria and Albert museum is not next to the British Museum it's in Kensington.

My bad.. I meant British Natural history museum...

placemats · 09/09/2023 11:25

That's in Kensington as well. You're perhaps thinking of the British Library?

Positive41 · 09/09/2023 11:27

I would go down the South Bank actually. Sun cream, hat and water and its fine. Stop off for a drink/snacks. Then i would head to Harrods and be a tourist! Find a lovely restaurant as your are strolling and have a lovely meal .I am jealous!

If you have swimming stuff handy there's an outdoor pool in Covent Garden.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 09/09/2023 12:15

I'm heading to Coal drops yard at Kings Cross to let the kids cool off in the fountains. Lots of nice bars, restaurants, coffee shops there too

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening
I tried to book the oasis in Covent Garden for outdoor swimming but it was fully booked for the weekend☹️

I love the heat so I’d go to the Serpentine galleries and laze about in the park.

But if you want cool and Euston, I agree with Friends house for simple food and then I would visit the Wellcome collection. Or Albertinis on Charlton Street for food if you want something more than cafe stuff.

Coal Drops Yard is great for drinking and sunshine, the British Museum is ok but full of things the English stole from elsewhere tbh. The Wallace Collection is nice if you like the olde worlde art but the cafe is in a conservatory and might be boiling today.

I'd find a free museum with air-conditioning

I was coming on to say exactly this! And somewhere to have a nice cold drink!

The Barbican? Nice terrace to sit and have a drink, should be cool inside (not sure what exhibition is on but would wander round anyway!). And not too bad to Kings Cross on the Hammersmith & City - it's one of the cooler ones

(Note: I live in London and I'm not doing this, I'm lying on the floor with the blinds drawn watching a film)

Is Euston near coal drop yard?
Lots of bars and restaurants restaurant around there?

Yes. It’s right behind Kings X which is a 5-10 minute walk from Euston

OP this is a good shout as all outside, plenty of places to sit and people watch, can get something to eat. If you are book people there is a really cute book shop on a barge there too

SlippinJanie · 09/09/2023 13:02

The Dickens Museum is fairly near Euston. It's a house he once lived on. Interesting & a nice little cafe. Doughty Street WC1N 2LX.

GentlemenPreferBlondes · 09/09/2023 13:03

The Wellcome Collection and The British Library are both near Euston. The first one has a free and highly rated exhibition on about milk (!) which finishes this weekend. That was on my list but I may not get round to it. The British Library also has various exhibitions on and some book-related curiosities you can see for free. Chilling out by the canal around Kings Cross / Coal Drops yard would be nice too. Let us know what you end up doing.

It's the first day of Open House London. See if anywhere takes your fancy: programme.openhouse.org.uk

I always love the British Museum!

I was in there a couple of months ago on a nice sunny day, it was stuffy AF, we had to leave!

jenbj · 09/09/2023 13:08

Someone mentioned Uber boats but don't even consider trying to use them today. Queues will be horrendous.

May the Lord have mercy on your soul. I used to commute on that line Canning Town-Waterloo and it's no fun. At least it's a weekend and shouldn't be as packed as it is in the week

Yep. Pretty horrific tbh. I would've stayed longer but kids were getting a bit overwhelmed with the heat and the crowds.
