Forced to install heat pumps

forcedtogetheatpumps · 08/09/2023 19:07

Yesterday, there was an article in the DM (yes, I know) about a Bill currently going through Parliament which basically says that home owners and LLs are going to be forced to install heat pumps otherwise they'll be fined or imprisoned.

How are people going to afford this?

jolaylasofia · 08/09/2023 21:07

not forced but after 2030 gas boilers will no longer be manufactured or sold.

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 21:13

We will probably put a new gas boiler in in the next few years, we are quite old so it should see us out easily, DS can whack in a heat pump when we are gone to offload the house

I find this over micro managing by the state fucking terrifying

Heat pumps don't work in older homes. All new builds should have them, but putting them in older, draughty homes is mental.

Reallybadidea · 08/09/2023 21:27

What I'd like to know is whether the prisons that non-heat pump users get sent to will be heated with heat pumps 🤔

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 21:33

Actually it could be on peoples bucket lists, do time for heat pump infringement.

Notaflippinclue · 08/09/2023 21:34

Terraced house no outside space where does it go

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 21:34

This hasn't been very well advertised apart from the Daily Mail

Whilst i am totally behind being green, I am a realist. If we all drive electric cars, how exactly are we going to charge them all? The current infrastructure doesn't support it anyway, and i can't see that it will be in place in 7 years time. My daughter, who has no parking on her property, and can't park directly outside, is talking about moving once she and her husband can't get petrol/diesel vehicles; she can't charge at home, and relying on charging away from home just isn't practical. Public transport doesn't work for them, and unless it's changed in a major way, won't in the foreseeable future either. So, who's going to be able to buy her rural property? And millions of people are in the same position. Ditto heat pumps, for all sorts of reasons, it's just not practical. And what's the point anyway when countries like India and China aren't on board anyway with this green stuff? It's good we are making efforts, but it needs worldwide realistic efforts. Which we aren't going to get. I fear for my grandkids.

“not forced but after 2030 gas boilers will no longer be manufactured or sold”

Better tell the boiler manufacturers that then 🙄
If you think they’ll stop manufacturing by 2030, I have a bridge to sell you.

Definitely. It didn't used to be like this.

Worst case scenario is that you replace your gas boiler with an electric boiler. That would be more expensive at the moment. But it is easier to invest in lowering the cost of electricity than in keeping fossil fuels circulating.

Heat pumps aren't going to work for every home. Insulation and other heating solutions will improve Meanwhile, there are other options.

Parsley1234 · 09/09/2023 00:07

It’s just all getting harder perfidious creeping of crap net zero that has no infrastructure housing crisis beyond no leaders with any moral upstanding nothing makes sense no care with any services no accountability it’s all bullshit. I can’t believe the way life is heading I’m nearly 60 thank fuck but my son just starting out just got to do the best for him.

MrsApplepants · 09/09/2023 00:52

Well in 2028/29 I will buy two nice, reliable Vaillant gas boilers and store them until they are needed. There will still be plenty of people happy to fit them for £££ and they’ll last until I’m too old to care or dead. Our house won’t ever be suitable for a heat pump and I’m not seeing any realistic alternatives at the moment.

So, according to the potential new law ( of which only 19 out of 300+ voted against in the latest reading )
A: People who live in flats, terrace houses and other unsuitable properties will be sent to prison if they either don't comply or pay the fine.
B: Will both owners of the said property be sent to prison if it's jointly owned?
C: Who are going to care for their kids when the parents are in jail?
D: People are struggling to pay their utility bills, how are they expected to stump up thousands for this?
E: Fined 15k for not complying, see above.
F: Will crown properties, such as Buckingham palace have to have them installed? If not, why not?
G: Will the houses of parliament, the commons and other government properties have them installed? If not, why not?
H: Private landlords will be selling up to avoid having this work done, who is going to house all those tenants?
I: The property market will stagnate because no one is going to buy a place that needs that work doing. In turn the property market will crash because there's more property than potential buyers.
J: Will this be the end of freedom of choice? If so, then this country can no longer call itself a democracy.
K:All appliances be internet connected, they will turn them off if they deem you to be using too much? See the last point.
L: This country is going to hell in a handcart quite frankly.

AuldWeegie · 09/09/2023 07:21

I had someone at the door the other day from Scottish Power, trying to persuade me of the advantages of a smart meter. His manner changed the instant I said no thank you, a smart meter wouldn't alter my use of electricity whenever I need it. Eventually I had to shut the door in his face.

The irony is that we are already frugal with power, and the thermostat is set several degrees lower than is recommended for good health. We're restricted by being in a conservation area, and there's little we can do beyond another layer of insulation.

I would be horrified, but not at all surprised, if the bill included enforced entry to my house and compulsory internet connection to appliances. As item K in the above post.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 09/09/2023 08:08

So they'll just fine us and if we don't pay, take our houses of us. That's alright then!

You surely don't imagine ANYONE in Westminster responsible for this bill has even considered that, do you? in their world everyone has the money for a heat pump, and the means and the will and the space to instal it.

Happy to go ro prison rather than do that. And I mean it. Politicians realised during the pandemic that a lot of people will happily accept gross infringements of their liberties and privacy if it's 'for the common good.' And that there are people who will happily enforce it for them.

User16328715 · 09/09/2023 08:11

DS is obviously very wise to not be buying a house which he can easily afford and renting as a owning a house just becomes a millstone.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 09/09/2023 08:12

VeloVixen · 08/09/2023 20:27

That’s your opinion. But if that’s true why is there all this stuff in the bill?

It WILL happen. I agree with you. It's almost through as it's on it's final reading whilst everyone was distracted on Ukraine and the Lucy Letby trial.

You won't be going to prison if you own property. If you own property you'll "just" get a fine.

What do you think happens to people who don’t pay their court ordered 15k fine?

User16328715 · 09/09/2023 08:20

It was a fine and/or prison, isn't prison if you don't pay the fine, though it could be both. I wonder if it will be like those £10,000 Covid fines, in our county there were about 12-14 of these iirc and all but 2 got thrown out, the 2 that were fined it was about £600 iirc
