Forced to install heat pumps

forcedtogetheatpumps · 08/09/2023 19:07

Yesterday, there was an article in the DM (yes, I know) about a Bill currently going through Parliament which basically says that home owners and LLs are going to be forced to install heat pumps otherwise they'll be fined or imprisoned.

How are people going to afford this?

This cant be a genuine poster

They dont even send rapists to prison for gods sake.

Vitriolinsanity · 08/09/2023 20:28

How will we all fit into this giant, empty prison?

It’s for new builds only, not existing properties. And even then, new boilers as from now are mostly hydrogen ready. Hydrogen supply will be the next thing to go live, and that will be a gradual process that doesn’t even have a time scale yet. So don’t panic.

Yeah, I am hoping to be able to hold on for hydrogen. Same as for cars. Electric cars will be the Betamax of motoring.

You can read it in Hansard if you like.

Exasperatednow · 08/09/2023 20:29

Yep, i was discussing the very slim chance of it happening. Am I only allowed to discuss stuff i agree with the very outside chance of it happening?

Careful. You'll be censored for pointing out it's incredibly unlikely

If your house is warm enough in winter to run your boiler at 50° flow temp, it’s probably suitable for a heat pump.

I experimented last winter and while it was above freezing, 55° flow temp was adequate, when we had the week of minus 8°, it had to go up to 62°.

You need underfloor heating, solar panels and battery storage to make a heat pump effective. We would have to spend £20k to pay a bit less for bills than we pay now, we’d never break even at our age.

forcedtogetheatpumps · 08/09/2023 20:33

If they can't imprison people they'll be fined instead then? The bill is onto it's third reading, but it's all made up and won't happen?

Our house would need total reconfiguration to have a pump. We have a small house and an even smaller garden. I also dont agree with cavity wall insulation and wont have it installed here.

Our boiler is not ready to be replaced yet.

Remember when the Poll Tax was Law?
Yeah, that. 😉

Extract of debate in which imprisonment is mentioned, see what Craig McKinley said about clause 248.

I remember the poll tax. I was taken to court over refusal to pay.

I was at the Poll Tax riots and saw the effigy of Margaret Thatcher being burnt.

…and Viz at that.

Sunflowershade · 08/09/2023 20:51

We are in the process of getting a heat pump at the moment (currently on oil with a really old boiler) cost to install a new combination oil boiler is 7k. Cost to install a heat pump is 12k - 5k government grant = 7k.

No one is forcing any one to have heat pumps until they need a new boiler and that costs the same as a heat pump with the grant. So people won’t be out of pocket.

This is absolutely not true.

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 20:54

The problem is that a lot of houses aren't suitable for them and can't be made suitable, those that aren't suitable but can be made suitable would probably cost a lot more than £7k

Sunflowershade · 08/09/2023 20:56

@User16328715 true!

BorgQueen · 08/09/2023 20:56

What about everyone who lives in 80’s/90’s houses with microbore pipes? Who is paying for the disruption of ripping out every pipe in every room , replacing them and making good afterwards?

A new Gas boiler can be installed for under £2k and doesn’t usually need new pipework.

Can’t find it, sorry.

hattie43 · 08/09/2023 21:00

Who the hell is going to pay for a heat pump system when they don't heat properly. Very negative feedback about them from some .
Scaremongering talking of jail etc

VeloVixen · 08/09/2023 21:01

Ah got it. So there you are, he was one of the MPs then to be concerned about the possibility of imprisonment……but yeah it’ll never happen! If it won’t happen, why is it in the bill? 🤷‍♀️

China will be pleased that it will be able to sell us more solar panels and wind turbines based on its steel, produced on the back of very cheap coal power. That is what we are doing here: driving our high-energy businesses offshore. This is not a recipe for energy security; this is a recipe for energy disaster.

interesting point.

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 21:04

People couldn't afford to pay their energy bills so the government had to step in to help pay them, how are people going to suddenly find loads of money for this, surely they must know that if people needed help with the bills, they can't afford this. There are loads of posts on here where people can barely afford a new boiler at £2k-£3k
