Does anyone remember this school drinks machine from the 90's?

Reading through the thread yesterday about what packed lunches you had as a child got me thinking about something we had at my primary school.

I was in primary school during the early to mid 90s and there was this drinks machine in our canteen, I'd love to remember what the hell it was called.

Here's what I remember about it:

  • the flavour options were lemon, blackcurrant or orange
  • it had to be operated by a midday assistant
  • the drinks cost about 20-30p
  • they came in a paper cup
  • they were incredibly sweet and left this sherbet like residue at the bottom (the best bit) and everyone used to use their fingers to scoop it out!

Anyone have this machine at their primary school?!

Yes. They also did a pretty horrible tea/coffee/watery soup.

Crochetpenguin · 07/09/2023 07:54

Yes. We had one in our workplace. I actually quite liked the soup but the cold drinks never dissolved properly.

We had one at my first proper job. I was office junior so had to make drinks for everybody. People didn't really go for the cold drinks. I think it had a kind of large, vibrating ball-bearing mechanism to dispense the powder into the cups
But I can't remember what it was called

Yes this has triggered some memories - have just googled and there is still a maxpax website but they supply douwe Egbert brand now. I think there was a machine at my secondary school but I didn’t use it.

I have clear memories of life in late 80s office….no photos of course.
we were supposed to pay something like 20p via a token but our account department got fed up of the admin so we then had free drinks. Was meant to be a limit but we didn’t adhere to it.

we could only have one sort of cold drink and one sort of soup stocked in the machine at any one time. All were very artificially sweetened with bad aftertaste- lemon or orange weren’t bad. You could also ‘cheat’ the machine into dispensing cold water. As the cup swivelled round with the powder you could grab it and replace with a fresh cup before the cold water was added to the powder. We didn’t have a water cooler in those days!

we had a choice of coffee - all were white. Decaff, normal or what we called a ‘mega’ which was very strong. All the real men proved their manliness by only asking for a mega. Hahaha.

as office junior I was hard working and well liked and I could occasionally borrow the machine key and swap the flavours round in return for getting more rounds in. We had a little plastic tray with holes in to carry the cups. We also had little plastic ‘frames’ to turn the cups into a cup with a handle..

sorry for long post!

Max Pax is ringing a bell, it must be that!

Although ours definitely didn't do hot drinks, only those cold sherbet things. I always remember it being this stand alone machine that a dinner lady operated for you at the side of the school canteen.

Sadly Google images is turning up the exact one but glad others remember it!

Ours was called Klix! Occasionally we had hot pineapple as an option.

This was mid 80s though. Beige cups.

NotFastButFurious · 07/09/2023 12:40

yes, I know what you mean but I don't know what it was called! I think the powder was already in the cups and they just added water to it?

There was a klix machine at the leisure centre that spoke! It was amazing in the 80s (obviously not really speaking, just pre recorded phrases)
It said 'your drink is on it's way' then 'enjoy your klix drink' as we stood in front of it in a state of awe 😂

We never had one at primary school but we had something similar in secondary school. We also had can machines with fizzy drinks in it.

menopausalmare · 07/09/2023 17:35

Max pax. Sounds like sanitary protection.

runningonberocca · 07/09/2023 17:37

We had this - I remember there was a phase for drinking hot orange and hot lemon. The chicken soup stuff was revolting!

CornishTiger · 07/09/2023 17:40

Remember it from my mums office m. They used to supply the machines. The drinks were in Little containers with foil tops

CornishTiger · 07/09/2023 17:43

That looks very familiar! The one we had definitely did hot drinks and watery cup a soup where the powder at the bottom never dissolved. In a tiny beige plastic cup that burnt your hand holding a boiling hot and disappointing "soup" 🤣.

newhere24 · 07/09/2023 17:53

Klix machine. we have them in the office. drink options (cold) are berry, lemon and tropical

CornishTiger · 07/09/2023 18:23

Im proper going down memory lane . The drinks pods were like fat discs.

We had a Drinkmaster machine in our sixth form, mid 80s, that had little pods that you opened and tipped into the cup before adding hot water, a sort of Tassimo for Luddites. The vegetable soup was lovely.

WellThisIsFun1 · 07/09/2023 18:54

Maxpax hot chocolate.

Happy memories from 1985.....

Braindeads · 07/09/2023 18:57

Definitely Max Pax, we used to have them in my workplace. The sweetest drinks ever.

Balloonhearts · 07/09/2023 19:10

They're still about. We had one where I used to work a few years back.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 07/09/2023 20:27

I’m thinking now that the one in my old workplace was klix
I surprised myself how much I remembered re the contents hence my previous long post!

but did use max pax in other places (yes terrible name)

Squirrel28 · 07/09/2023 20:41

I’m now getting a flashback of opening the little foil packets and eating the powder inside by dabbing it with my finger. Did anyone else do that?? My dad was a teacher and I’d occasionally go to work with him so it’s possible I had illicit access to them. 😁

FredaFox · 07/09/2023 21:09

Yes!!!! I remember this and dipping my finger straight into the powder!!
Our machine was brown from memory

Braindeads · 19/10/2023 14:26
