Non-story RAAC problem

HowMuchMore2 · 04/09/2023 13:27

There are approx 22,000 schools in England and the schools that have had to close are around 100. In 2018 it was highlighted it could be a problem - nothing was done about it.

Why is it such a big story all of a sudden? 100 schools will have to ship in portakabins because part or all of their buildings are deemed unsafe.

Everyone is up in arms about it, it's such a non-story! Worked up by journalists at a slow news time.

There are way way bigger issues out there.

Neither are builders going to drop other contracts to get the work done quickly. I don't know where the stores of contractors and portakabins are that are just sitting idle waiting for the call!

MissAtomicBomb1 · 04/09/2023 13:55

Oh bore off.
Just because it doesn't affect you you've decided it's a non-issue.
Top marks for taking the opportunity to do some teacher bashing though. I'm sure they're thrilled to bits that they'll be teaching in portacabins & marquees Hmm

WTF has Taylor Swift got to do with it.

The Mumsnet crazy brigade are out.

I would say the cost of living crises, the drug problems, crime issues, stabbings, Met Police, are all things we know about but are much less of a problem than the schools governors having to call Morris Leslie for a portakabin.

Why are people being so rude? You know you can politely disagree without launching into personal attacks?

OP posts:

I will be rude when a person thinks child safety or the lack of it in this country is a total non story. Honestly? You really should be ashamed of yourself.

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 04/09/2023 13:58

Do you need someone to tell you that you’re doing a fucking good job OP?

ShadowPuppets · 04/09/2023 13:58

I imagine that if they’d identified the cladding risk pre Grenfell (rather than sticking heads in the sand at best, and outright criminality at worst, causing the deaths of scores of people in the most horrific way) then you’d have considered that, similarly, a non-story?

The idea of a classroom collapsing on a group of children, with no notice, makes me feel sick. Add to that the fact it’s as a result of years of government neglect of public services and yes, it really is a story.

The poster was demonstrating how click bait works. A tenuous link to a celebrity is 101 clickbaiting basics.

I heard a teacher on Radio 4 say that they would have to source new furniture for the portakabins. That seemed odd to me, are the classrooms all immediately so unsafe that nobody (Not even a builder in PPE) can even go in to take the furniture out?

You're just plain rude and you should be looking much closer to home when seeking out shame.

Here you go OP, I've made it newsworthy for you:

Taylor Swift HITS OUT at FAKE concrete used for facility for CHILDREN and SLAMS head of structural engineer institute who is ex school mate of DARREN DAY. TEXTS between experts for DECADES reveal ALL.

👏🏼

PatsyJStone · 04/09/2023 14:02

Portakabins aren't huge, the current furniture may not get through the doors. School classrooms are often bigger than a portakabin

God forbid they'd have to turn a desk on its side to get it through the door? Or take the drawers out of a cabinet??

Batshittery.

Well firstly you can have more than one urgent problem at a time.

Secondly, do you think school budgets are awash with cash to fork out for portacabins and repairs. Which leads us to the fact there probably aren’t enough portacabins in the country to cover need once all schools have been properly assessed.

Which then leads us to the fact we haven’t got enough structural engineers to assess the schools/hospitals needing it in any thing even approaching an urgent time frame or the construction professionals to remedy it.

A large number of public buildings being death traps is an urgent issue. We can’t just stop using them for their designated purposes.

if one classroom collapsed on a yr 2 class it would be a big story. The fact is we’re talking about thousands of buildings that contain building material that puts them in the category of this being likely to happen in. Thousands. It’s pure luck they’re still standing at all.

it’ll certainly put a new slant on the next storm that blows over.

So will this story run and run and run forever more until every public building is rebuilt? Or will Prince Harry's next jibe on the Royal Family push it into 2nd place?

Meanwhile, kids are getting stabbed on our streets because of ineffective policing and the divide between the rich and the poor gets wider every day.

Of course it won't you're being purposefully obtuse. Not sure of your point really?

HowMuchMore2 · 04/09/2023 14:10

@TheAloe
I think you need some help for whatever issue you are projecting onto me. I didn't ever say I wasn't concerned about children and haven't teacher bashed. You are seriously rude and need to address that.

So you’re riled up over kids getting stabbed but can’t see the issue with them getting crushed?

I don’t believe you care about the gap between rich and poor at the same time as trying to minimise such a widespread issue that the rich are the most likely to be least affected by.

what is there to lose to admit that you just didn’t fully understand the issue?

AnnPerkins · 04/09/2023 14:14

You are really oversimplifying the problem OP. Presumably you are unaffected by it and unable to understand the many consequences.

HowMuchMore2 · 04/09/2023 14:16

I am not a concrete expert so correct I don't fully understand the issue, but I am long in the tooth enough to know when the Press are bigging up a story on a slow news day.

I do care about children being crushed but the collapsed ceiling was 2018 and I don't believe anyone was hurt (thankfully). If children had been crushed it would be a massive story quite rightly but that hasn't happened.

Rich people also go to school and not always private ones.

OP posts:
TheAloe · 04/09/2023 14:18

Hasn’t happened ….. yet. Good god OP you’re really not coming across very well. 🤦‍♀️ And you had the audacity to say the batshit Mumsnet brigade is out. Pot kettle springs to mind.

FlowersGrewBackAsThorns · 04/09/2023 14:18

The issue is that while 100 schools have been identified, there are potentially many more. An unknown number of schools at imminent risk of collapse is a major news story and a huge issue; it's very bizarre to try to downplay it. I don't know how on earth you get to teachers complaining about being hard done to - I think everyone has a right to go to work in a building that isn't at critical risk of falling down on their heads? It's hardly precious to object to it. And the point is, this concrete might be present in a lot more schools that don't know about it. A disaster could easily happen. The disruption of school closures has a wide-reaching effect, and this comes latest in a long line of examples of this government destroying the public services on which most of us rely and squandering taxpayer money on enriching their own allies. Of course it's a major story, and it's part and parcel of the other terrible problems in society right now - everything you list is because of Tory corruption, greed and incompetence. This included!

HowMuchMore2 · 04/09/2023 14:20

Still here @TheAloe ?? Launch into another personal attack why don't you?

You're still projecting.
