I am nearly 17 stone, early 30s and so unhappy

As the title says, I am obese. I want to lose at least 5 stone but I just don’t know where to start.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources that go back to basics with nutrition etc?

I am going to start calorie counting but I just feel so lost. I want to meet a nice man but I am so unhappy with myself.

A lot of this is a lot of well meaning and not incorrect but complex instructions.

I would say to start with just do two things

  • go for a short walk at the same time each day to build a new habit (and while you are walking you aren't eating)
  • use my fitness Pal (or similar calorie counting) diligently. You don't need to drop your calories really low. Aim for very slow loss as it will be more sustainable

You can build in more healthy eating over time. But start simply and don't overwhelm yourself.

I found mfp really tricky when I did it (easy if packaged stuff but typing in recipes was a real faff)

So it's not going to work for me. But moving away from processed goods and replacing food will.

I read the Tim spectre article.

He mentions the 4 Ks... I dont think I've ever eaten any of them!!!

So I've added all 4 to my order- anyone with ideas what you eat them with that would be great.

30 fruits and veg etc is a great aim. I'm nowhere near that. I'm just going to start with increasing fruit and veg on a daily. Asis but its likely to be fairly samey (banana apple.. some fruit juice and then vary the veg)

I might do berries once a week when we get the order (just signed upto tescos so again the routine will help me)

So berries each week
Fish each week
Aiming to start at 5 fruit and veg a day
Nuts and chocolate drops for snack
Greek yoghurt (with frozen fruit or maple syrup (i know but if it means I eat it..) for "pudding"

I've bought some flaxseed and chia seed that I don't knowwhat to do with... I was going to add to Porridge but forgot to have Porridge this morning.

I'm hoping by adding in some structure and adding all this in its a good start

I eat nakd bars when working. They're probably evil processed sugar but haven't got a replacement yet!

Team RH - I can't fault it. Spells everything out in the most basic no bullshit way. 24lbs down in 3 month!

I have largely gone with packaged food to be fair because I have a disability that makes cooking hard. I try and use fairly healthy meals though.
Or something like salad with a tin of tuna and bread.

I think the key is to pick the approach that works best for you. Everyone comes at this with different issues so deciding which of the many approaches will be most do-able is the key

Ultimately as long as it leads to a calorie deficit it will result in weight loss.

I've dropped from 14st 1 to 12st 6 since start of June (despite disability making exercise hard). It feels very doable using MFP plus gentle exercise (short walks/swims) .

Wow well done!

Crikeyalmighty · 05/09/2023 12:54

@curvygirl4 you can do it- I'm rooting for you- every time you think I'm going to grab something unhealthy- drink a large glass of chilled water and eat 3 grapes or 3 raspberries!!

CupOfCoffeePlease · 05/09/2023 14:15

I'd really like an easier way to record what I eat.

I used to use paper and pen but really use jy phone for everything now.

I dont want a calorie tracker or to weigh previously. More a diary I guess for these sort of comments? (Just an example)

Br - Porridge with chia. First time I tried chia and liked it. Will stick with this.

Sn - starbucks cappuccino- felt full

Lunch- salad with tuna - really liked the dressing so will do this again

I dont really know of an easy way to have a running document on my phone.

I already use my Google calendar for life/work so thats out!

Thinking positively it’s kind of a good thing that you’ve got some not ideal dietary habits because changing them will have a big impact and give you faster weight loss.

Women I know have had success with both Gloji and Noom and you can often get Gloji or whatever other plan your area has signed up to for free via your county council. My friend googled her county name and Gloji and it came straight up. (Hampshire if that helps)

You could try my "bore yourself thin" diet. I lost several stone on it over about a year, combined with exercise - walking with a group (that means you keep up a reasonable pace rather than just dawdling). I took no other sort of regular exercise. You don't feel hungry after about half a week.

This diet has the advantage that there's little thinking about what to eat and no wriggle room.

Breakfast - 2 Weetabix with skimmed milk. No sugar. Don't use cereal that you pour because you'll just give yourself a huge portion!
Lunch - A piece or two of fruit.
Teatime - Soup - any sort (you can swop over lunch and teatime if you want)
Dinner - A great big salad - green stuff, tomato, carrot etc with 100gm protein, any sort - meat, fish, eggs, cheese, salami, nuts... I didn't worry about the fat content of my protein! Low calorie salad dressing - I usually just drizzled a little Balsamic Vinegar onto it.
As much tea or coffee as you want - I used whole milk - no sugar. I probably had about half a pint of whole milk a day because I like my tea weak and milky.
Only other drink I had was water - sometimes sparkling water with a slice of lemon.
