Do most people secretly believe they’ll be famous one day?

Prompted by a conversation with several people:

If you have a creative hobby (such as singing, am-dram, dance, writing, painting etc.) do you secretly believe that one day your talent will be recognised and you’ll become famous, even if it’s only after your death? Even though the odds are very much against it?

Two or three people said “yes, doesn’t everyone, even if they’d never admit it?”

Someone else said, “no way, that’s grandiose and not normal”.

I imagine it but I don’t really believe it

CupOfCoffeePlease · 03/09/2023 22:27

Er. No? No idea people did this. Chances are soooo far the other way! ( ido wonder if parents of gymnasts/swimmers that di a squillion hours a week are under this delusion.. but just looking at numbers it's illogical.)

smilesup · 03/09/2023 22:28

Never. I have occasionally dreaded it.

DanielsDancingMonkey · 04/09/2023 00:00

No!

gwenneh · 04/09/2023 00:01

Not at all, definitely not normal.

TomatoSandwiches · 04/09/2023 00:04

I think people day dream but the majority know that's all it is.

ToastyCrumpets · 04/09/2023 00:05

I hope not! I dream of getting published one day, but definitely would be under a pseudonym if so.

continentallentil · 04/09/2023 00:05

I don’t think it’s normal for adults no!

I think teens do think it, on account of not knowing what the odds are.

SoggyBottomsUp · 04/09/2023 00:05

No 😂

MonkeyChiselTree · 04/09/2023 00:06

I honestly can't think of anything worse than being famous.

Ohthatsabitshit · 04/09/2023 00:08

No. I think most people dread the thought of fame.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 04/09/2023 00:15

Absolutely not, my worst nightmare.

Raera · 04/09/2023 00:17

Another no

SpiderWillyDoesWhateverASpiderWillyDoes · 04/09/2023 00:21

I actually did study from an early age to become a classical musician. I hoped if I did ever become good enough to make the grade as it were, I would become successful but I knew the odds are of me being a famous star were pretty slim. Most likely I would end up poor and getting the odd bit of work here and there supplemented by teaching or other jobs.

WandaWonder · 04/09/2023 00:24

No idea I could not think of anything worse to be honest, why is it automatically assumed it is a good thing?

Lisheens · 04/09/2023 00:30

I write novels for a living, and feel very lucky to do so, but am certainly not ‘famous’.

Princessdebthe1st · 04/09/2023 00:42

Horrified at the very idea!

sezzer87 · 04/09/2023 00:47

I think I have that dream up by the time I was 10. As a full grown adult Id rather pluck my own eyeballs out.

JaneJeffer · 04/09/2023 00:52

No I'd absolutely hate to be famous

MistyTrains2 · 04/09/2023 00:57

Haha no I'd hate to be famous. I do sometimes ponder if I wrote a book but I'd go under a different name.

Isn't is kind of like wishing the life you have away ?

GarlicGrace · 04/09/2023 04:55

Yes. That is, I like to fantasise that my work will be recognised and richly rewarded, my name will be spoken often with admiration & respect ... it doesn't matter which work; I've fantasised about this through two careers and several hobbies!

The only small drawback is that I hate being on camera, really dislike being interviewed and would actively avoid meet-the-fans type events.

So what I want is to be anonymously famous 😂

tuvamoodyson · 04/09/2023 06:25

No.

Autieangel · 04/09/2023 06:36

Yes I secretly think I will be a famous comedian one day. I'm in my forties with 3 kids and work in customer service.

Autieangel · 04/09/2023 06:36

Or a famous author. I've started 3 books but never finished one.

Lemonademoney · 04/09/2023 06:48

God no, can’t think of anything worse!

I do however fantasise about being very wealthy 😁
