Do most people secretly believe they’ll be famous one day?

Prompted by a conversation with several people:

If you have a creative hobby (such as singing, am-dram, dance, writing, painting etc.) do you secretly believe that one day your talent will be recognised and you’ll become famous, even if it’s only after your death? Even though the odds are very much against it?

Two or three people said “yes, doesn’t everyone, even if they’d never admit it?”

Someone else said, “no way, that’s grandiose and not normal”.

Not at all. Something I would purposely avoid actually.

CurlewKate · 04/09/2023 07:13

I secretly believe I might be published one day. But I know how unlikely it it!

ThingsWithEyes · 04/09/2023 07:15

I did until I was about 30, then grew out of it

No! 😅

I can't think of anything worse. It makes me feel really uncomfortable when people who've seen me play recognise me out and about afterwards.

My partner doesn't mind it. I know some people who love it. One of my exes for example. He'd never admit it but we he was really disappointed if we went out and he wasn't recognised 🤣

Thanks all! I’d hate to be recognised in the street too. I prefer to fly under the radar.

No.
Definitely peculiar to your group.
I mean, obviously there are some 'wannabe celebs' but most people sing / paint / make music etc because they enjoy doing it.

My dd (see username-song on spotify if you're curious) is a self taught singer/songwriter who's just released her 1st song. I asked her if she wanted to be famous (as I couldn't think of anything worse) and she said it wasn't the plan, but she'd like it if she was. She just enjoys what she does.

I wanted to be in Home and Away when I was little but when I think back it was probably more the sunshine and beach that drew me 🤣

Newtrix · 05/09/2023 10:32

People actually believe this?! Sounds like my idea of hell.

Annaishere · 03/09/2023 22:25

I imagine it but I don’t really believe it

Ditto.... but only in my teens and 20s.

LivLongAndProsper · 05/09/2023 13:09

No.
not unless "most people" are 8 or 9.

CoreopsisEverywhere · 05/09/2023 13:10

No

In case anyone was wondering, a LOT of alcohol had been consumed and some people said things they wouldn’t say normally.

One person works as an actor occasionally and has had a very small part in a film. So he has already been immortalised, I suppose, even if few people would notice.

Another person believes that her writing will live on after her death. (I’ve never seen her writing, so I’ve no idea).

The third person might not think she’s going to be famous, but she refers to her teenage daughter as the next [insert name of pop star here]. I used to think she was joking, but now I think she wasn’t really.

It sounds as though these people are very much in the minority, and most people don’t think like this even after five measures of gin.

I think most people think they will be one of the super successful one day.

And perhaps nowadays with social media more think they will be famous.

MadamWhiteleigh · 06/09/2023 14:48

Daydream, yes. Believe it will happen? No.

FoodFann · 06/09/2023 14:48

No, and I’d hate to be famous. But, I do think we have a ‘side-hustle’ culture where some people think the only hobbies worth having are the ones that can be monetised. Plus, an awful lot of people think they can be ‘influencers’

MidgesGirdle · 06/09/2023 14:50

The idea of being "famous" in any way makes me cringe. I don't want strangers knowing anything about me!

PurpleMonkeys · 06/09/2023 14:52

Fuck no.

I'd like the cash.

But the work hours, the attention, the interviews, the travel etc etc. No no no no. I'd hate it.
