Which day off work? Wednesday or Friday

I'm about to submit a flexible working request to reduce from full time to 4 days a week. For various reasons, I'd want the day off to be a Wednesday or Friday. Just can't decide which! Any thoughts?

Wednesday. Fridays are usually the fun flexible day

Thriwit · 03/09/2023 09:32

My workplace doesn’t allow Fridays off as part of flexible working, because it’s by far the most common day for annual leave, so would prevent people taking leave.

When I worked 4 days, I had Thursdays off and it was fantastic. Fridays are usually a more relaxed, lazy day anyway, & everyone’s in a better mood. I found the 3 days in a row was better for getting things done too. That will all likely be job-dependent though.

MuggleMe · 03/09/2023 09:47

I love my Fridays, I actually relax as I'm not thinking about work the next day.

I'd pick Wednesday. Partly because you only have to ever work 2 days before getting a day off, but also because loads of people in my place have Fridays so unlikely they'd allow any others!

Blackscrackleanddrag · 03/09/2023 09:54

I did this and took Weds off. I loved it! Only having to work two days at a time was brilliant! Stops you getting really tired from working four days in a row too.

Crunchymum · 03/09/2023 09:57

Personally I'd go for Friday.

I'd find it hard to get in and out of work mode with a mid week day off. I prefer to get it all done in one go so to speak. Then I can concentrate on my other stuff on my days off.

However if Friday is a WFH day (and Wednesday isn't) I'd opt for the Wednesday.

2chocolateoranges · 03/09/2023 10:00

In a previous job I had the Friday off. Loved it as meant I got housework all done when kids were at school and dh was at work and we had Saturday and Sunday to spend time together whereas now I’m doing housework on a Saturday and not having much time together.

a 3 day weekend is bliss,

Fuckitydoodah · 03/09/2023 10:00

100% a Friday.

You know work is done for the week and can have a long weekend. It works out well with wanting to book holidays, weekends away and when there's a bank hol Monday.

A day on its own goes so quickly. And I'd hate the having a second Monday morning feeling.

PinkRoses1245 · 03/09/2023 10:02

Monday if possible! It then gives me extra annual leave as I get extra hours in lieu of bank holidays; to take when I want

isthismylifenow · 03/09/2023 10:05

Wednesday. Because we work half days on Fridays.

Then again Wednesdays are usually busier than Fridays, so I'd factor that in if it applies.

Goldmember · 03/09/2023 10:10

I'd always pick Mondays, simply due the bank holidays and I can choose my pro-rated bank holidays. For me, Fridays are my least busy day and everyone has the Friday feeling so I'm happy to work.

ClinkyWotsit · 03/09/2023 10:13

Friday. My annual leave is pro-rated so fewer days, I figured I’d often take a Friday for a long weekend etc so made sense to have that day off anyway so as not to eat into my reduced annual leave more than I needed to IYSWIM

Maddy70 · 03/09/2023 10:17

Friday. Have a nice long weekend.

Wildhorses2244 · 03/09/2023 10:20

Got to be Fridays - I love going into the weekend having had some time for myself before I focus on the kids needs! And Fridays are great for after school play dates because loads of other families have some Friday afternoon slack too!

ChangedName654321 · 03/09/2023 10:24

I would choose a Wed for a day off. Just 2 blocks of 2 days and a rest in between

familyissues12345 · 03/09/2023 10:25

Friday.

I used to like a day off midweek, but now I find it disruptive (don't know whether I'm coming or going Grin) and I'd rather a decent rest at the weekend

Tjjd2023 · 03/09/2023 10:29

Wednesday. Everyone seems to have Friday off so it's busier on the roads and wherever you might go (what I find anyway!).

starfishmummy · 03/09/2023 10:59

Cheesypizzaa · 03/09/2023 09:08

Possibly not! I'm not sure. But I guess I can put forward my preference?

Where I worked, so many people already had friday as a non working day that people had a better chance of reducing hours if they requested a different day. Maybe if you dont mind either, you could say you'd prefer Friday or Wednesday in your request?

I find it the opposite where I live. On a Wednesday I need to leave earlier as always get stuck in traffic. (I don’t start work in rush hour 30either). Fridays are so much quieter on the roads.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/09/2023 11:14

For me it would definitely be Friday (not in a particular order):

Get the weekend feeling a day early on a Thursday.

Can do weekends away without using leave.

if you want a night out on a Friday you will feel more refreshed and with more time to get ready. I don’t bother going out on a Friday now, I’m just too knackered by the end of the week. just want the sofa and telly!

In my office every day is frantic in fact sometimes Fridays are the most frantic because you’re trying to get something boxed off that hasn’t been finished during the week. So there’s no chilled atmosphere on a Friday at my work, the Friday feeling really only kicks in at 3pm really.

I’d feel more out of the loop if I’ve I’d had a day off midweek with everything else carrying on as normal.

Some projects need a run of days. An interruption mid week is just annoying.

If you’re feeling under the weather and run down, knowing that you only have to make it through till Thursday then you’ve got a block of 3 days to rest if you need to is really good. One random day in the middle is neither here nor there if your day off is Wednesday, you’ve still got another 2 days to go till you can rest.

if you’re in work on a Friday and other people go for a weekend away then you end up having to cover for them. If you are off every Friday anyway then the work schedule should be built around you not being there on that day.

it would be an absolute no brainer for me. In fact I would ask my boss tomorrow if I could do that if it were possible as it sounds so brilliant. But as there’s only 2 of us in the office and it’s frantic enough as it is then it would be a no. They wouldn’t be able to get someone in for just one day.

Can’t go too far on a Wednesday anyway though if you’re back in work next day, so it’s a moot point.

Nagado · 03/09/2023 11:16

I have Mondays. It’s absolutely wonderful on a Sunday afternoon but I have found that there aren’t quite as many toddler activities on a Monday and, in our area, lots of the soft plays are closed. But it does feel lovely knowing I don’t have to work tomorrow.

In your position, I think I’d go for Wednesday, especially if Friday is already a quiet day. Why would you give up an easy day at work?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/09/2023 11:22

I don’t work Wednesday and really love it. The week is broken up, and it’s a great day to use for appointments like hair, dentist etc. I work from home on a Monday, so it’s nice just to have one day in and then a day off.

My DP always works from home on a Friday morning and his work does a half day Friday anyway, so I like that on a Wednesday I have the house to myself too.

thehistorymum · 03/09/2023 11:24

I LOVED having Wednesdays off! It was so lush never working longer than 2 days!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 03/09/2023 11:27

I would go Friday. I've just gone flexible working and only do a half day on a Friday and it makes such a difference to my weekend.
