A log of schools confirmed closed/open

Doesn't look like an official list will ne provided any time soon. Figured we could list schools we've had confirmation of closed / open ourselves.

I've a primary and secondary that could be affected, no word yet. Once I get the confirmation either way I'll name them and say Open or Closed.

It is absolutely shocking that this is being released so late and so close to a new term. Unbelievable actually.

How are parents and children coping with a sudden change to plans? My children would be hugely disappointed / upset if they discovered they were going online next week.

Absolutely awful. 😔

But it has happened before! National school closures one day after going back to school Jan 2021. This is exactly what anyone who has dealt with the DfE would expect.

The DfE, incidentally, tweeted last night, 8pm on a Sunday before term starts, asking headteachers to urgently fill out the 'has your school got RAAC?' survey. Because they don't know how many schools, or which schools do.

This is why the government aren't publishing a list. Because each affected school will be affected differently, and have different options for working around any loss of facilities. So it's up to schools to determine the degree to which school provision may or may not be impacted and notify their local communities.

People really ought to just concentrate on something more important until that happens.

Nothing to see here, look away, move on?

If schools and hospitals are so dangerous that they cannot be used for fear of risk of collapse, how is that not of interest nd critical importance?

Former Education Permanent Secretary, Jonathan Slater told ministers they should rebuild up to 400 schools each year.

Government said it would only pay for 100.

Officials tried to get it up to 200.

Then Rishi Sunak arrived as Chancellor and cut it to 50.

No, this is an absolutely massive story that will go on for months. But it would be pointless for the government to publish the list of all schools possibly affected until each school has had a chance to determine the operational impact. In the meantime there’s little point potentially worrying specific groups of parents for nothing.

QueefofSheena · 04/09/2023 11:31

I used to manage school properties. They have known about this since the roof failure in the school mentioned by Noble. The schools I looked after were surveyed in 2021, but I'd had to wait 18 months and had to make a nuisance of myself by chasing. I didn't hear anything after the survey to confirm it was present or otherwise.

A PP mentioned asbestos. Lots of schools have it but they should also have an asbestos log that identifies its location. If it's accessible it should have been encapsulated. No work should take place without checking the log. Notice I said should. Quite often this is left to inexperienced staff. It's very unusual to have well qualified H&S/building services staff, especially in primary, due to the terrible pay.

Fair enough @oldwhyno I misunderstood your post. Sorry.

It will get worse over the winter months as well.

This is a career ender for Sunak & Conservatives.

He made the choice to underfund further, after the Conservatives allowed the capital stock to deteriorate (on purpose).

DuncinToffee · 04/09/2023 14:51

Sunak said 95% of state schools are safe, so that leaves around 1,100 that are not.

It will be a long list.

Foxesandsquirrels · 04/09/2023 14:55

@DuncinToffee how does he know that when most schools haven't even returned their questionnaires.

Edited

Whenever you hear 95% or 5% when it comes to these things, it is because they are basing their numbers from a sample.

So the reality is they don't actually know which SPECIFIC schools are affected.

All they know, is that based on large enough sample of schools, they are 95% confident that about 5% are affected.

So they still have to check on the ground which will take time and money.

DuncinToffee · 04/09/2023 15:06

I agree with you both.

It's his flippant ignorance of saying 'don't worry, most of your children will be safe'

Remember Jonathan Slater was the guy at the DfE forced to resign so that (soon to be Sir) Gavin Williamson didn't have to over the exam algorithm fiasco that lost all those kids their university places. I don't think he owes the government any loyalty!

Let's fucking hope so!

Iam4eels · 04/09/2023 19:08

Seems to be the general attitude of the Conservatives to this whole thing, except for Keegan - her attitude is that she deserves a pat on the back for having to work extra hard.

I hope it is a career-ender for them all but, let's face it, these snakes could fall in shit and come up smelling of roses.

Their fingerprints are all over it.

You can track it all since 2010 which is why their rather pathetic "lets blame someone else" is simply not going to work. It is having the opposite effect
