A log of schools confirmed closed/open

Doesn't look like an official list will ne provided any time soon. Figured we could list schools we've had confirmation of closed / open ourselves.

I've a primary and secondary that could be affected, no word yet. Once I get the confirmation either way I'll name them and say Open or Closed.

Our school is built on an old mine and the Early Years classroom is slowly sinking, we have no catering facilities, the library is a cupboard, there are cracks in the classroom walls, parts of the wooden floors are literally duct-taped down because they've lifted, and the roof leaks when it rains to the point that we have Bucket Monitors - older children whose job it is when it rains is to pop on a high vis and put buckets underneath the known leaky spots.

Foxesandsquirrels · 01/09/2023 13:46

This is one thing I completely agree with them on though. I don't think parents should be finding out their school is effected via the media. Surely it's better each school contacts their effected parents first. Releasing random names will just cause mayhem for those schools as parents will be expecting immediate answers.

I completely agree. How can you go from health, to education, to defence.
when your only job has been an mp.

it makes no sense.

Which is fair, I just don't see that it's all the current government's fault that's all. If there's a life span of 30 years there should have been plans in place long before now by various labour and conservative governments over the years.

there was a plan I think, to renovate schools. and Michael Gove cancelled it?

LER83 · 01/09/2023 14:08

Just had an email to say that 22 classrooms at my dc secondary school are affected so school is partially closed. My dd is starting yr 7 and she is to be in everyday, but ds in yr 9 is remote learning, and the year groups are alternating having a day in school. This is North Essex, Braintree area.

Wehavealaughdontwe · 01/09/2023 14:11

All maintained schools in Northumberland are confirmed to be safe by NCC and will open as normal

MentholLoad · 01/09/2023 14:12

can teachers and parents withstand another period of remote learning?

WhiteFire · 01/09/2023 14:15

I think I did read that different LA's had different building schedules, so it is likely to be an all or nothing type situation - which obviously makes it much harder in terms of space to decant.

TokyoSushi · 01/09/2023 14:16

Just seen a post on FB from Warrington Borough Council that all schools are unaffected and will be open as planned.

Whinge · 01/09/2023 14:21

I'm a little worried that councils are confidently saying their entire areas are unaffected. I think it would be unsual for entire areas to have no schools built or adapted during the specified time period. So if they're just going off the survery results which were conducted by school staff, then isn't there a chance the results could change when proper investigations have taken place?

toomuchlaundry · 01/09/2023 14:34

Not being rude to head teachers but not sure they are the best suited to know what their school is made out of

PL15namechange · 01/09/2023 14:46

Cornwall council have said there's no evidence that RAAC is present in maintained schools in Cornwall. Academies are liaising directly with DofE.

But I agree that it seems very unlikely that that is accurate. For instance, this is our local secondary school. Seems exactly the sort of building that would be affected?!

I suspect there will be clusters of this in certain areas.
There aren't huge numbers of architects and builders specialising in public buildings. And this was a different method of roof construction. So firms probably either specialised in it or didn't use it at all.

Couple that with areas that saw rapid growth in the 70s and there will be parts of the country badly affected and others with relatively little.

You certainly get the same "design" of school being used in clusters around local areas - I used to do supply teaching and there were about 4 standard layouts of primary schools and if you learnt them you could pretty much find your way around any school in the local area.

Haygrove in Somerset is all over local news but not on dm list.

Has anyone thought about looking at hospitals yet?

It’s like I had a crystal ball. They’re now saying hospitals, prisons, police stations and court buildings affected!

As a politically homeless person, I don't understand what it's got to do with "this government" in particular? The news says it was material used to build schools between the 60s and the 90s, so surely this is the fault of many governments?

Because they've been in power for ages, knowing the materials had come to the end of their safe life but not organising the construction of new schools or funding proper temporary buildings. They are shockingly indifferent to the plight of people who rely on state education, and that's. most families.

knobkopf · 01/09/2023 18:40

How has this not come out before? When I was at school in the 90s (private school), the science lab (built in the 70s) was deemed unsafe for this reason and the ceilings were propped up with supports for quite a while and then there was significant building work done to rectify the situation.

IsThePopeCatholic · 01/09/2023 10:57

Does this government ever do anything right? Noooooo. It’s clear, they don’t give a shit about state schools. And now for the next fiasco….

That's because they are cu**s

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 02/09/2023 00:07

Sorry (not sorry) but....

The phrase is: is your school AFFECTED?! - not effected.

There. I've said it.
As you were.
