What do i do? Do I call GP in the morning although will only get a telephone call or should I attend hospital?

The question was whether to call GP or go to hospital. Anyone who thinks going to A&E with a breast lump is acceptable has absolutely no understanding or “empathy” for people who need or work in those emergency services.

Kindly point to where I mentioned attending A&E, I didn't.

And as you don't know any of the circumstances your comment is unwarranted.

Thank you everyone for the kind responses.

I'm on the phone to the GP. Receptionists still aren't able to book face-to-face appointments at my surgery as they still have covid guidelines in place but I have a UTC and out of hours GP at my hospital which is why I was querying that but hopefully the Receptionists will advise.

The lump is painful but not excruciatingly so.

I've been feeling really ill for the past week so I was concerned it could be related.
I also still breastfeed dc5 at night so I wasn't sure if that could cause something.

A phone call appointment should suffice. I called our health centre, explained to the receptionist. The GP called me back within the hour and made the referral to the breast clinic in our local hospital immediately. Do not be fobbed off.

I will bear that in mind thank you.

Actually I think in the end she went to GP again but was like me with long delay in referral and both then needed chemo. I would go via GP but make sure they refer. Mine was over phone both times but second referred.

You mentioned breast feeding. Could it be mastitis?

I was wondering this although when I had it before it was extremely painful and visibly red whereas this isn't.

I just wanted to wish you good luck. I found a huge lump once when I was working overseas. I know how much. It preyed on my mind until I could get home and see my doctor. Fortunately mine was unproblematic.

Robotalkingrubbish · 31/08/2023 11:57

It definitely sounds like it could be related to breastfeeding, a blocked duct possibly. I’ve had four breast lumps, they were all harmless cysts. Fingers crossed @lampyshade that your lump is nothing to worry about. I hope you quickly get answers.

Tilllly · 31/08/2023 15:13

What did receptionist say @lampyshade?

lampyshade · 31/08/2023 15:19

Thank you all.

I spoke to GP who booked me an appointment for this afternoon 4.30 so will update after.

I've had mastitis a few times but it wasn't like this. This lump doesn't really hurt but feels swollen x

lampyshade · 31/08/2023 19:21

I've been referred under the emergency 2ww

OP posts:
Tilllly · 31/08/2023 23:23

I'm glad your referral is urgent

Buggeration that you need it tho - but best to be safe

Keep us updated x

Weenurse · 31/08/2023 23:26

Good luck, let us know how you get on. 💐

The 2 week pathway is standard for breast lumps rather than emergency. Try not to worry, hard as it is.

DyslexicPoster · 01/09/2023 06:31

Glad your being seen, hopefully it's just a cyst as it's so sudden.

Our emergency GP is at our large county hospital too, but to some MN posters hospitals are only for imminent death situation. Or death, of course.

pepsimax00 · 01/09/2023 06:40

OP this happened to me start of the year GP appt the next day I was at the hospital for a check on it 10 days later, very luckily it was just breast tissue which has since got a lot smaller, a hormonal thing apparently. Wishing you all the best. It's very scary.

I'm under 30 so the 2ww doesn't apply to me automatically in that sense but I'm trying not to worry in the meantime, thank you

Yeah its the same for me. Out of hours GP located at my local hospital (we get referred there lots of times anyway as our gp never has any appointments)

Thank you. Hopefully a cyst x

I had exactly this - large lump appeared overnight a couple of weeks ago. I’m older than you - 50 - and not breastfeeding but had mine checked last night and it’s a cyst. I hope yours is also nothing to worry about.

While stressing about it and reading other threads on MN someone mentioned getting it checked privately, which hadn’t occurred to me. I contacted BUPA and was seen the same evening.

I know this won’t be an option for everyone but just mentioning it in case anyone has private health insurance through work and like me hadn’t thought to use it for this.

I’m now 8 days past the dr appointment with no referral letter and was starting to catastrophise so for me it was worth paying the excess for the peace of mind.

Hope you and everyone in the same boat has good news.

OP can I ask why you think your age affect your 2WW pathway. Just there is a lot of myths amongst health staff that young people don’t really get cancer and that simply isn’t the case.

That's just what I was told.
Googling suggests if you have an unexplained lump and are over 30 then you her referred under the 2ww. Being under 30 requires more boxes to be ticked it seems but I'm not a hcp

It sounds like it could be a fluid filled cyst , I have had a few of those , large, smooth, tender , pop up out of nowhere .

I was supposed to take out health insurance recently and I'm annoyed I didn't before this instance, grr!

Glad to hear yours was just a cyst, hopefully mine is also as I believe it appeared suddenly but I don't check them regularly admittedly
