I've looked in sport, and as it's the start of the season I'd love to congratulate/commiserate/complain about the quality of the coffee?

Anyone else with a rugby kid?

No rugby for dd this weekend- cadet camp! However ds has joined his 6th form team and local team after several years out, he had a game this week. They lost, but he doesn't care.
Dd has now started playing for school too!
The friendships are the best part!

IncomingTraffic · 04/11/2023 07:21

DS has rugby tomorrow. It was supposed to be a home game but the pitch is a swamp and the opponents have a 4G pitch. Although DS would much rather be playing on grass.

Florin · 04/11/2023 07:43

Can I join? I think I have found my people!
Ds is in under 12’s. He joined 3 years ago and it has honestly changed out life. He used to do football too but they were so antisocial whereas rugby is so welcoming we have made a whole set of friends and rugby has taken over our life, love our Sunday’s watching him play then the kids running to get chips and burger and hang out and playing in the woods while the adults catch up over a pint in the bar.
Son adores it and it is brilliant for him. He has just started at a major rugby school so he plays 3 times a week for school, fitness another day and then plays at the weekend. Love traveling around watching him play matches on Wednesday’s for school and then we both go on a Sunday to watch him and help at the club. Today we are also off to the Stoop to watch the Quins match and love going to watch matches as a family.

Glad he has moved from minis up to juniors as not missing the festivals being so long and normally wet and cold and dear lord the parking! I second the best purchase being dryrobes, bought one for our son last season and dh and I used to argue over it when he was playing over who could wear it so bought myself one for this season!

Kia ora @HurricanesPoua - I'm a fellow kiwi! Gutted about last weekend... 🖤 So, so pleased for England though. Terrific performance and I really thought you has it until the last 2 minutes. Such an exciting match (I hated the final, not because of the score but just poor and unprofessional performances from both sides -definitely not good for the game).

No rugby for us this week. Water logged pitches and my eldest has an injury (non rugby related!) that means he can't play contact until after Christmas. He's devastated but we have still been attending training and fixtures to support the team. He's practising kicking on the sidelines and in a week or so will be able to join in the fitness training. I'm proud of how he's handled this setback actually, as it's such an important part of his life.

So lovely to hear that so many girls are involved, and at senior levels too. Our Club has a great Women's team led by a fantastic lady who is really putting women's rugby on the map in our city. Our Club has done a lot of work improving women's facilities in our Clubhouse too, and it's actually a great place to hang out (just as well as I feel like I'm there all the bloody time!)

Let's hope the weather cheers up a bit and we're all able to get back out there next weekend

Just training for my U12 girl today. Had my car valeted yesterday which may have been a mistake!!!

PuttingDownRoots · 05/11/2023 09:08

Weve been reminded to bring towels for the car!

YesitsBess · 05/11/2023 10:54

We're training on astro this week as both our pitch, and the team we were supposed to be having a friendly with are waterlogged 😟

Had a lovely night out with the other rugby mums last night. I haven't laughed so much in ages!

DD’s match was cancelled ( waterlogged pitch) but DS had a good match on a surprisingly well drained pitch at a club about an hour away. I was proud of him today. He’s never going to be Dev Squad amazing and he doesn’t “see the game” as well as the stars but he played out of position as second row against a much bigger pack and really put 💯 in. Some good rucks too- he has his moments- he just needs to string a few more together, bless him 🤣

Feralgremlin · 05/11/2023 19:36

Our u11s had a great match today, dare I say it the best they’ve played so far! It’s wonderful to see all the training they’ve been doing coming together. We even had a player from the other team sub in to our team for a short while (we only had 9 boys playing today but the visiting team had 16!) which I think just highlights the sense of community in the sport and across clubs. It was also my first day coaching today, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

PuttingDownRoots · 05/11/2023 19:49

This morning I don't think either DD or I were feeling it after a late party last night.

But we pulled ourselves together, and got out the house, with me thinking I could always pull her from training if she was too tired.

I'm am so glad we did. She had one of those sessions where it all just clicked. It was a mixed session of the U11s to U14s (aka the Boys session as due to a quirk the U11s mixed team is counted within the boys section... shes the only girl), tackling drills. And she was taking down the (U11) boys a lot bigger than her as it was about technique. Plus a lot of bag work.

They were all coated head to toe in mud and she had the biggest grin.

That's why I put up with the mud and early Sunday mornings... the grins and gained confidence.

WarningOfGails · 06/11/2023 14:25

DS played in his first ever match yesterday (U9s - only started in Sept, been on the waiting list for 2 years!). The opposition had a couple of strong players our kids struggled to contain but kept on trying. DS seemed to understand what was going on which was what I was worried about!

Setyoufree · 08/11/2023 07:23

There's a waiting list in your area?! Wow, that's incredible!

Our club is so friendly and supportive and inclusive but sadly struggles for numbers. My DDs U11s team has enough for this year but when they lose their handful of girls, they won't have enough boys for a viable U12s team sadly

Setyoufree · 08/11/2023 07:24

There's other clubs in the area with 40+ kids per age group but they've got nothing like the friendly culture I want her to play in

rainydogday · 08/11/2023 07:40

Hi, I would like to join 😊 my DS is 14. Loves the game. He is training alongside a national team development player program now and seems to have rugby practice with that, his usual team and school most days! As a family we love it. Everyone so friendly and I think my son will have friends for life. He did have an injury, suspected concussion which did scare us all. Very mild but was horrid to watch. I am now a complete bag of nerves and worry about it all the time! The bigger and older they get the more fierce it becomes. He is 6"5 at 14, but desperately needs to fill out! I worry he may snap! The time off and the big bash he got has made him stand off a bit too. I think that is only natural and don't think we should push him. But I do think once they start getting sights of the professional game they do put a lot of pressure on themselves. Smile

muddyoldboot · 08/11/2023 10:30

Hello! How nice to stumble upon this thread!

Rugby is a massive part of life in this house. DS1 (19) has been playing since he was four and is now in a prem club senior academy & other DS is 11 & part of U12 set up at our local club. SDS also played all through minis / Uni so I've been watching kids play rugby on Sunday morning (and lots of other days of the week) for 20 + years!

DS2 loving his rugby atm - annoyed that school have football for one more week when he thought it was rugby season!

Anyway, just place marking & saying hello - username changed for this thread. Although I quite like it as I feel like a muddy old boot most of the time!

Well, there is a waiting list for my local club. But I know the club in the other town about 20 mins away doesn’t have a full set in his age group. I just didn’t want to travel there for rugby.

autumnleavesandrugby · 08/11/2023 11:02

Just found this thread! I've an almost 16y old who's just getting back into rugby after a horrible couple of years of injuries, the worst being two separate knee fractures. He's played since he was 4 and absolutely loves it, so it's ben really hard for him, but I've been so proud of how hard he's worked to get back.
He missed half his U15 year and all of his first u16s year but fortunately gets another U16 year this year. Cup quarter final on Sunday- they started the season really well but have had a run of poor league results, so not sure how it's going to go. I'll no doubt be on soup and hot drinks duty (rugby tea is always better than rugby coffee by the way!)
(His injuries weren't from contact, for anyone worrying- just very unlucky- first one went on an awkward landing from a high ball and second one on taking a conversion).

Feralgremlin · 08/11/2023 21:44

We had mid-week training today, was just wondering if anyone else with younger players experiences the same mid-week mayhem that we do?! On a Sunday the boys are all calm and cooperative, working hard, etc, but on a Wednesday evening they are a completely different breed! Over excited, rambunctious, and do not stop talking 😂

TentChristmas · 11/11/2023 16:38

Awesome thread 👋🏽 What’s the current view in your clubs about things like the Halo protective headband for concussion protection?

YesitsBess · 12/11/2023 09:24

Morning all. Just a solidarity post for anyone on a freezing field!

Please come and tell us all how your matches went. We've a friendly at home so I managed to get a lie in. Yay!

We are on a week off due to me needing g to take my Cubs to Remembrance Parade. DH has already left for his refereeing.

Looking at the fog rigbyblooks more attractive as I could wear a coat!!

Mummyme87 · 12/11/2023 09:49

Both my boys are at the same pitch today which makes it easier for us! Just started to rain which is always fun 😖

SpringingJoy · 12/11/2023 09:55

Ds3 had a rugby match this morning at 9.00. I opened my eyes at 8.50 so must have turned the alarm off 😬 Whole household still snoring🤦‍♀️

Cue last minute apology fib that we'd woken up under the weather so couldn't make it and further fib in telling ds it had been cancelled due to the rain (he's 6 and would have been devastated at missing it).

Anyone else with fuck-it-I-slept-in guilt this morning?

pumpkintart · 12/11/2023 09:57

Dusted off the gloves and hat this morning for todays match. The dry robe knock off made an appearance a few weeks ago it is definitely Union weather now!

IncomingTraffic · 12/11/2023 09:58

Our game has been cancelled last minute by the other team. So we are heading off to 90 mins of training - with a promise of it being very tough training - with some remembrance just before it starts.
