Please hold my hand, I’m so scared. Awaiting urgent pelvic/ovary ultrasound results

I’ve been suffering from heavy irregular periods, bloating and discomfort for a while, I’ve just thought it was maybe the peri menopause - I’m 41.

The past two weeks it’s intensified,Friday I was in agony went to Dr, she took a urine test which was positive for pregnancy- that was a false result as not sexually active and had blood in urine. She was worried about appendicitis though given symptoms. She rang the hospital and I was sent to a surgical ward for tests. Had an urgent CT scan, it showed a nodule on spleen and on lung, apparently these can just be incidental, follow up scan in 3 months for those.

They said that there were very large cysts on my ovaries and they can feel them as masses .They took further bloods and my height & weight. They said I’d have urgent ultrasound as they give clearer pics and I’d be discussed at their (gynaecology ) multi person meeting . Sent home Saturday night.
Phone call Sunday asking me to go for ultrasounds today. Had one with full bladder and then a vaginal one with probe. The lady said she’d write report today and send to gynae. She said I should hear back soon given urgency of referral.

I can’t stop crying and shaking, my heart is racing and I’m convinced I’m going to die as I’m petrified it’s cancer -leaving my son, who has ASD. I’m a single mum and petrified.

Has anyone else had similar please? The fact I was referred for an urgent Bank Holiday scan has made me think it can only be cancer.

I’m sorry to ramble, but I’m desperate.

Thanks for reading.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I have no helpful advice but wanted to offer support and a handhold while you wait for your results 💜

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 28/08/2023 14:53

Almost all cysts on overies are non cancerous so try not to worry.
Keep this fact in your mind until your CT scan.
They have to refer your urgently, just incase.

SataumaMeddler · 28/08/2023 17:35

Gently hand hold. Pop over to the cancer support thread while waiting if you want to talk through your worries while you wait. It's very supportive and understanding.

There are other reasons for urgent scan also like if a cyst ruptured or if ovary twisted appendix burst etc these are all surgical emergencies
my prayers for you it will turn out to be benign and hopefully it is not cancer

I had urgent scans if ovarian cysts when in pain looking for tortion / twisting as it is an emergency.

I really feel for you OP, it's always a worry waiting for news

Timeforabiscuit · 28/08/2023 18:07

Hand to hold, waiting is awful because you can't plan and your brain runs away with you.

You don't know what you are going to face, as others have said it's still likely non cancerous and you are having every test and are being looked at urgently, you have done all you can, and you're facing it head on not hiding, which is incredibly brave.

Can you break up time into 30 minute blocks, plan what you can do in that time, then move onto the next 30 - if you can't manage 30, try a smaller amount and build up. You can get to the point where you get mote information and conserve your energies for then.

Dentaldrama · 28/08/2023 18:10

I had an 18lb ovarian cyst removed over 20 years ago. It was a worrying time, but it was completely benign. Flowers

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/08/2023 18:14

I'm waiting for a large cyst to removed at the moment, ha similar to you with scans, needed an MRI etc. List of hospitals have appts and surgeries at the weekends now. Try not to worry x

Minfor · 28/08/2023 18:20

Sorry you're going through this, the waiting is awful.

A friend had 2 large ovarian cysts removed about 10 years ago. She went to A&E one night with stomach pains, she thought it was appendicitis, and went into surgery first thing in the morning. All very urgent and scary, but not cancer. She is fine now. Good luck.

Scaredycat4 · 28/08/2023 18:20

I have been in the 2ww system now for 6 weeks. I am 35 with 2 little ones and have a large mass that I can move in my abdomen.. the info is very confusing, they think it’s a 5cm cyst on one ovary and a 14x10 cyst on the other.. but can’t tell if it’s attached or not. Have had a US scan, MRI said it was suspicious, and had a CT last weekend. Now waiting on those results and absolutely terrified I have cancer.
The Gynae dr had to consult a more senior dr when talking to me.. they mentioned losing potentially both of my ovaries and more if necessary.. but with no real hard facts about what it actually is yet.
It’s ruining my life. My daughter is only 1, and I had a c section almost exactly a year ago.. surely they would have seen something was amiss back then.

Robotalkingrubbish · 28/08/2023 18:21

I’ve been through exactly the same and I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. That was over ten years ago. Even if yours is cancer, it’s not automatically a death sentence. My GP was very supportive whilst I waited for results and after my diagnosis. She put me on Amitriptyline, which helped me to sleep. I’m thinking about you @legofansmum, you will get through this, we find strength we didn’t know we had. 💪

I have no symptoms, regular periods no bleeding at odd times.. appetite was fine till I entered the 2ww now I am too scared to eat. No pain during sex, just a big old lump in my abdomen

Well that's a very good sign of all being good.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 28/08/2023 18:29

I had no other symptoms and it turned out to be fibroids , which are benign.

Did they know they were fibroids immediately or did they suspect other things? They just don’t seem to offer any alternatives.. it’s just all so scary. I guess they have to work on the premise it is cancer till we know it isn’t.
I wasn’t 100%sure I was done making babies.. and they just threw that at me in the gynae apt.. assuming I was as I have two kids already.

The fear is overwhelming isn’t it 🙈 and it eats you up at 3am

sentinent · 28/08/2023 18:37

Cancer is likely to involve one ovary initially. Cysts are usually benign (but can be urgent if bleeding/torsion). It's great news that the CT scan was otherwise unremarkable.

Reepicheepy · 28/08/2023 18:39

@legofansmum - I’m sorry you are going through this.

I had a scare last year (fibroid that was possible sarcoma, scans and then multi disciplinary team meeting - which then got delayed). Am also a single parent and one of my DC has ADHD/ anxiety so I know just how scary it is going through this on your own.

I wanted to mention that I contacted my GP because my anxiety became so great - he was amazing and prescribed me propanolol to help me with the wait. It really did make a difference and things a bit more manageable so do reach out the the GP if it is too much to manage.

wishing you lots of luck

Panda8383 · 28/08/2023 18:43

Thinking of you 🥰 hoping for positive news x

legofansmum · 30/08/2023 21:11

Thank you so much for your kind responses, they really helped.

I had a phone call from the hospital.
I have two types of cyst - one is 9 cm and one 10 cm.

One is suggested to be an endometriosis type one that is known as the chocolate filled, the other is fluid filled but with different compartments that they don’t know what the compartments are yet.
Raised blood tests, but that might not necessarily be cancer, could be endometriosis based.
It’s being put before the next multi disciplinary team meeting which depending on cut off point for referral, could be end of this week or end of next week.

I have had some blood test results come back which aren’t great either.

My Dr has prescribed me Diazepam as I was having horrendous anxiety attacks, they are taking the edge off.

It’s such a scary time.

didn't want to read and run after your update so just wishing you all the best and hoping you can be strong as you wait for more answers xx

Timeforabiscuit · 31/08/2023 08:17

Hopefully the diazepam will see you through this bit, and the pain is manageable for you.

Thinking of you, are you signed off work?

LemonDrizzle10 · 31/08/2023 08:30

…I’m not saying it is cancer but understand how worrying it is when you’re not sure. Hopefully all is well when you get your results.

MaidOfSteel · 31/08/2023 08:34

Sending you a big hug, OP. We're all here with you.
