Tickets for tonight’s Mahler Prom

My DS19 is in London and was hoping to go promming this evening but has missed out on getting a ticket. With the train strikes, I am guessing there will be some tickets for resale. Does anyone know how to get a ticket?

There were touts outside when I went to the Mahler prom a couple of weeks ago.

Engineeringlife · 27/08/2023 11:02

Did you buy from the touts or did you just notice them? DS missed out on promming tickets this morning.

Just noticed - I had my ticket!

Thank you 😊 for replying
My son is seeing if he can get a ticket from the Albert Hall now or see if they can give him a top tip on getting one. He was going there anyway to get his raffle ticket for the promming queue. We had three devices in the promming queue this morning but no luck.

* It's been a while since I've been so bear in mind things could have changed *
I doubt there will be official returns of promming tickets as I seem to remember they didn't take returns on them. Sometimes people hover around with spare promming tickets that they couldn't use but it's a total gamble.

If he keeps refreshing the page, there may be seated ticket returns but they will sell in lightning time (less than one minute) due to popularity. If you go down this route you need to be logged in and ready to pay immediately. Obviously these are far more pricey.

There also used to be a queue inside the hall at the box office for seated ticket returns, if still there it will be competing with online (i.e. the staff will return and online buyers may buy before people present have the chance).
Sometimes it is possible to get the attention of someone who is returning physical tickets and offer to buy them, explaining why.

armlump · 27/08/2023 11:33

If it were a "normal" prom, I'd say definitely turn up and you'll get in somehow, even if not the ticket type you would want. But this will be the most popular of the season by far, nothing is guaranteed, as I'm sure you realise.

armlump · 27/08/2023 11:41

Of course there are the touts as well, as mentioned, but God knows what they will charge.

LlynTegid · 27/08/2023 11:56

Please don't buy from touts, supporting criminal enterprise. Much as it will be very disappointing to miss out, there will be other opportunities to hear the fine work of Mahler.

I'd give the RAH a ring as I'm pretty sure they always sell a few tickets at the door on the same day, you just need to queue. Good luck

LIZS · 27/08/2023 12:20

Dh arrived well before 9am in the queue with a weekend pass and his raffle ticket was still mid 90s. He was successful at a sell out prom a few weeks ago with a box office return but it was not cheap.

armlump · 27/08/2023 12:29

If he wants to queue at the box office to try for a seated return ticket he would want to leave plenty of time. (N.b. this is completely different from queuing for a prom standing promming ticket). RAH staff would advise on what time to get there.

@LIZS I thought they'd done away with the physical prom queue? 🤔

Edited

They have, this was the queue for entry raffle tickets which are released at 9am. I suspect it was mainly season and weekend ticket holders who get to reserve their place a day ahead.

armlump · 27/08/2023 13:59

@Engineeringlife seated tix available now!

armlump · 27/08/2023 14:00

Gone now, sorry 😔

Engineeringlife · 27/08/2023 14:12

We were lucky to get promming tickets last year for a Mahler concert. DS has been to RAH this morning, they had one ticket in the back row of a side box with restricted view and it was next to the wall of the box so the sound wouldn’t be great either. It was £70 too!!
He going to try asking in the queue to see if anyone bought two tickets this morning and is only using one.
He went to last night’s concert so it’s not a wasted trip to London from the north.

There might still be other returns, maybe try later this afternoon.

Getting Taylor Swift tickets for DD was easier than this!!
Thank you everyone for your messages. All advice has been passed on to my DS.

I mean, it is worth trying even if it doesn't work out, IMO, as it's a one-off and very special because of it being Rattle's last in his position with the LSO.

Engineeringlife · 27/08/2023 14:56

He will try the queues later. He’s taken himself to the Imperial War Museum!!

WHOOP 🙌 WHOOP 🙌 WHOOP 🙌

My DS has got a ticket. He was waiting around the queues and a man approached him. He had purchased two tickets this morning but his friend couldn’t make it. My DS bought the ticket for £10.

Thank you to everyone who has offered advice. When I posted this morning, I didn’t think I would have any replies. Love the MN people in my phone. 🥰

Wow op great news. Hope he really enjoys it. Love the Proms.

(Side note: went to the Mozart last week abd told a few people what I was doing - one thought I meant a school prom, one thought it was in the park and the third thought there was only the last night! Wtaf?)

maltravers · 27/08/2023 17:08

I love your son’s enthusiasm- is he a musician himself? Hopefully the prom will be fabulous.
