Think you’re being a bit old fashion and silly to be honest

NannyGythaOgg · 25/08/2023 22:38

It's all unisex - just depends on each child's preference.

BCBird · 25/08/2023 22:39

hiddeneverythin · 25/08/2023 22:46

I'd no idea what the list was going to be about when I read the title....!

Wristfolds · 25/08/2023 22:47

I thought this was going to be some sort of penis beaker add on

thecatinthetwat · 25/08/2023 22:48

Yeah I know its just where money is not great . I want to shop in the under 10.00 zone for example and it doesn't allow you to filter. And it just drags through pink fluffy stuff. ( Not literally) I know boys can have that stuff to But I don't want to be forced to go through pages of it

Stompythedinosaur · 26/08/2023 00:20

Smyth's has everything filtered by theme, so just looks for "action figures and players" or "cars and construction" and avoid "dolls and fashion"?

Obviously you're unreasonable to still be talking about girls and boys toys, I'm happy we are moving away from that rubbish.

I thought this would be someone wanting to hide or “filter out” the MN Sex topic, à la all the cross people a few months ago when it seemed to be a real issue

CallieQ · 26/08/2023 00:39

It's 4 months till Xmas

Sorry but you are being ridiculous. There will always be loads of stuff that any particular child doesn't want in a toyshop. Quite apart from the regressive message that separating toys by the sex of child that is 'supposed' to play with them sends, it makes life so much harder for those of us who are less sexist and for whom the distinction appears arbitrary. What is wrong by filtering toys by category (construction toys, dolls, crafts etc)? Much more helpful.

Easystuff · 26/08/2023 00:46

I knew this thread would turn into the there's no such thing as girl/boy toys wgats a girl or boy toy bla bla .

I have boys and girls yes they play with each others toys totally fine . I'm not one of them people that say boys can't play with toys that back in the day would have been seen as a girl toy. But I feel I should be able to filter what I'm looking at by sex. If I choose to . Obviously MN don't see it like that. And neither do the stores . So obviously I'm wrong. But it still pisses me of.

Well, most parents know what their child likes, and filter by that: dinosaurs, Paw Patrol, science kits, football, Spiderman.

None of the above are gendered.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 26/08/2023 00:53

Maybe they should have stuff grouped as interests like ‘cooking’ or ‘gardening’ or ‘superhero’ but grouping by sex just enforces gender stereotypes. Ds1 used to be obsessed with ponies when he was little (he did horseriding) and we got him ‘girls’ toys as it was what he was interested in, he’s still a boy.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 26/08/2023 00:53

@LylaLee Exactly. I’ve gone on the Smyths website and you just pick what your child likes. No sex required.

TyneTeas · 26/08/2023 00:56

"I'm not one of them people that say boys can't play with toys that back in the day would have been seen as a girl toy."

But you are still categorising them as girl or boy toys.

So there are either girl and boy toys or there are toys for children.

If there are just different kinds of toys for children regardless of their sex, why would you filter by sex?

Just an example. There's an art case type thing the picture on the case is of a little girl abd it's all pink . Inside are pens paint etc . My son is autistic and this would upset him. If things are meant to be non gender then why no just have some stars or somthing as the packaging why a girl

Your son would be upset to receive an art set with a picture of a girl? I think perhaps you might want to stop digging at this point...

And...? I wasn't aware that misogyny was a symptom of autism.
