I'm looking for Xmas stuff for my 2 boys . I'm looking on entertainer and smyths. Its really pissing me of . I want to just look at boys stuff and unisex. I don't want to go through pages and pages of girls stuff . Ie barbie , hair stuff pretend make up. Yes I know boys can play with that stuff to
But I just want to look at plain old boy stuff.

I get it OP, something like an art case ought to be a toy that any child can use. It’s super annoying when manufacturers present things like that in a pointlessly gendered way, presumably in the hope of increasing sales.

And it also makes it more of PITA to wade through these big online offerings with endless pages of irrelevant stuff.

TyneTeas · 26/08/2023 01:20

Do you think a girl on the autistic spectrum would look at an art kit with a picture of a boy using it and think it isn't for her?

It may be a bit harder, but I do think this may be more about social conditioning and gender stereotypes than ASD

Your the only one who seems to get it. Oh well never mind.

I'm talking about my own autistic child. I know that he can be very black and white. I have said hes autistic that's why it makes it harder. I'm not going to start defending my autistic child against mn.

And...? I wasn't aware that misogyny was a symptom of autism.

I think it is more likely that OP means the unnecessarily stereotyped presentation of the art case will make him feel that the product somehow isn’t “meant for” him. That doesn’t make him a misogynist, he’s a child.

Autism would presumably mean he might struggle to ignore the messaging on the cynically stereotyped packaging of a product that should really be for boys and girls.

Are you saying that having a girl as the person using it makes it a toy presented in a gendered way whereas if a boy was using it it would be fine for either to use??

MintJulia · 26/08/2023 01:30

OP, can you not filter on type of product - sport, creative etc.

I know what you mean though. The vast majority of boys would not be seen dead with a suffocating pile of pink plastic, regardless of what the equality campaigners would like.

Perhaps being able to filter on colour would be the answer. Exclude anything pink& sparkly and you're just about there. 🙂

Hes autistic

So is my son and after he came back from RDA he decided he wanted ‘horsie toys’ which they don’t brand as ‘boys toys’ and he was fine. As pp said misogyny isn’t a symptom of autism it’s taught.

I don't think you can exclude pink sparkle etc. I can go via construction /cars etc. But because I'm trying to shop cheaply . For example 10.00 and under range. It does not let me filter like that so I'm ending up with pages of hair beads. Pink crystal art ect .

I have not taught my child any such thing . My other children would not care. Just because your austic child is fine with things does not mean my child is
Every austic child is different

I think people are giving the op an unnecessarily hard time. She has acknowledged that there's no such thing as girls toys and boys toys and that children can play with anything but she knows her own son.

If he doesn't want toys that are marketed as girls toys, it's going to be frustrating having to wade through pages of irrelevant results.

Certainly not. I was responding to the OP’s specific example.

OP didn’t just say it happened to have a girl on the box. She said it was all pink. It seemed clear to me she was describing a product that’s been presented as if it’s ‘for girls’, when really an art case should be a great toy for any child who likes drawing. You get a lot of products like that on these big online retailer sites.

It can be confusing even for neurotypical children who pick up on the idea that the (theoretically) ‘opposite sex’ version of a toy somehow isn’t for them to play with, in ways they don’t really understand; presumably it’s more so for some ND children.

My point is both that they shouldn't market it in a way that looks like it is a toy for girls and also that something pink and sparkly is not a girls toy

delphi13 · 26/08/2023 15:04

Rather than call it a girl or boy toy maybe they could just have a pink, fluffy plastic tat section so that I could avoid it for my girl and my boy!

Castform · 26/08/2023 18:07

Surely it doesn't take that long to scroll past them? If shops aren't sorting everything into girls/boys toys anymore that can only be a good thing.

It was taking me hours. In shops you can glance the ilse and move on quickly. You can't do that with scrolling

How can't you do that with scrolling? You dosee t have to click I to each item to see if it's pink and sparkly or whatever.

MelonsOnSaleAgain · 26/08/2023 19:22

I get where you are coming from OP.

And however lofty our ideals, such as believing toys are l/ should be non gendered, which I do incidentally, it’s not always the fair decision to foist those ideals on our kids. However much we might wish otherwise, much of the world still genders things. Pink and blue, and house keeping and army etc etc etc.

our Children have to live in the real world, and all OP was doing was complaining about the loss of a filter. If they no longer split boy / girl, then other filters should be available!
