Your worst beauty mistakes?

Chatting to my mum this afternoon and we started laughing about the first time I used eyelash curlers.
This was the days before false eyelashes.
I applied my make up and then applied my mascara as usual. I had no idea how to use them, so I clamped the curlers on tight on my still wet mascara for a few seconds, I mean, you apply hair curlers to damp hair right?
Tried to release them and found to my horror that they were well and truly welded to my eyelashes!
MUUUUUM.....
Mum ran upstairs thinking I was being murdered to find me walking into walls holding the curlers.
She grabbed a flannel, wet it, rubbed soap on it, then started running it over my eye.
Eventually freed them, along with half of my eyelashes and my eye looking like I'd got the world's worst case of conjunctivitis.
To be fair, once I'd stopped crying, my other eye was a perfect match.
So, care to share your worst beauty disasters?
The curlers went in the bin.

At 17 my friends attempted to dye my long medium brown hair bleach blonde with one box of dye (much too little for anyone thinking of trying it). It turned orange before it would have gone blonde. We panicked, washed it out. I was left with 2 inches of luminous ginger at the top of my hair and my usual brown after it. £250 of repairs later it looked green in certain lights. A nice boy at school called me “greenie” for months. Never again.

Thank you all for making me laugh so much, these are brilliant and bringing back so many teenage memories 😆

dikwad · 26/08/2023 07:13

In the early 2000's I once died my very dark hair bleach blonde. It looked and felt horrendous, it was bright white. I looked like Doc from back to the future. The worst part of it was when I entered the local nightclub and my hair and teeth were literally glowing in the UV light.

Not understanding basic hair dye principles and thinking that I could change the colour by putting a different box colour on. This error led to a bright red root strip and black ends 🙈 ended up spending my £50 premium bond winnings and 8 hours of my life in a professional hairdresser’s chair stripping the colour out. And had straw like consistency for months.

In the 70's (yes that long ago!!) it was the craze in my school to remove the end of your eyebrows and then pencil them in thinly. I used hair remover. Bloody hell it stung and puffed up. I used Dr Sloane's linament and it stung even worse. Worse, I sometimes used a navy pencil instead of dark brown to 'finish' the brows off.

Brows were never the same afterwards!

The usual fake tan and makeup disasters aside when I was 8 I begged Mum to let me have a feather cut. not being one to agree to fashion I was amazed when she said yes. For the uninitiated feather cuts think Rod Stewart's hair was very in at the time. it ruined my hair it stuck out at funny angles and looked a mess going to school I had to have tons of lacquer and vitapoint on it!
the hint of a tint promised amazing results yet did sod all to the color except making my dad lose his shit when the new bathroom flooring got ruined!

BaaCode · 26/08/2023 08:43

Crying laughing at these. I've just been reminded about when I shaved my brows off and pencilled a neat line in their place.
Fine until I accidentally rubbed one off and spent the day with people giving me strange looks.

I went to get my brows professionally done once. I said I didn’t want half moons and I didn’t want thin brows- just wanted a bit of a shape and tidy up. I got skinny half moons.

I read that banana was good for hair. I wouldn’t try it- it took forever to wash out and so much shampoo it likely dried out my hair.

On holiday I went for a swim wearing waterproof mascara. I thought I looked a bit glamorous, but it turned out that the mascara just streaked down my face.

Omg me too. Literally crying for days and refusing to let anyone see me😅

I just know that I'm not going to be able to get to sleep for laughing at the images and your descriptions of disasters 😂
When I was a young teen, a friend told me that egg was a great hair conditioner.
Cue me beating an egg and massaging it into my hair then rinding it off with hot water.
End result looked like I'd slept with my head in a bowl of scrambled egg!
It took forever to get out. Another disaster for my long suffering mum to sort out 😂

You had nice disasters, for you to look back and laigh with your mum. Such sweet memories of being young and a bit silly and not being afriad of trying things you had only heard. I find that cute🤗

This thread is hilarious, I can't stop laughing, please keep them coming so it can be added to Classics 😂 it's too funny not to be added!

just remembered my mum was working and had left dad in charge not a good idea. my sister had been pestering for her hair to be cut and mum had said she would have to wait. unfortunately my sister didnt wait and while dad was occupied watching tv she trimmed her fringe. hence why on the pictures of my cousins wedding she has a hair band pulled almost half way down her forehead keeping the surviving tufts flat!

Whattodo112222 · 26/08/2023 18:43

I got my hair cut in Belgium as a teenager.. the woman left me with a lopsided bob with a blackadder fringe... I was so so upset. My mum was furious when I got home to England as I had bum length thick brown wavy hair.
Had no idea what I was thinking.

I used to get my hair permed when I was a teen. At 16 someone recommended henna which came in a packet that said 'mahogany'. I applied it about a week after my perm.
I was too proud to admit I looked like Ronald McDonald. When I went back to school after the summer, my maths teacher burst out laughing when she first saw mw.

She's the best 😊
I daresay she laughed her socks off when I wasn't looking at some of my beauty mishaps.
The first time I tried eyeliner and mascara ( liberated from my mum's make up bag, my dad took one look and asked if they'd let women back down the mines and Dudley zoo want their panda back 😂

Sun In
I am medium skinned with very dark brown hair
I turned my lovely hair bright orange

GinAllAround · 27/08/2023 13:06

I "discovered" concealer just before my 18th birthday party and that was in the days when shades were limited to pale and very pale, so it didn't exactly go with my naturally olive skin. I have reverse panda eyes in all the party photos 🤦🏻‍♀️

Bumblebee1988 · 27/08/2023 20:52

Too many.

My first was probably wearing my mother's ancient (pink tinged) foundation ain high school. For some unknown reason I only used to apply it up to my eyebrows, leaving my forehead bare.

Luckily at 6th form I found the wonders of dream Matt mousse. Need I say more?

I got teased for my bushy eyebrows so plucked them pretty much off.

In 6th form I wanted bigger lips so sucked the air out of a small glass around my mouth and kept it there for 5 minutes. No big lips but the equivalent of a love bite on my chin which stayed there for a week. Even dream matt mousse would not cover it.

So many fake tan disasters. Even worse was the sun burn disasters. On holiday I got so sunburnt on my forehead it swelled up like a balloon and the swelling slowly made its way down my face. Family found it utturly hilarious. Except dad who had to foot the overseas medical bill.

Niftythrifter · 27/08/2023 21:09

I change my makeup according to the different seasons and this includes wearing a deeper blush. I wore too much and looked like Aunt Sally. This was last year too!
