Your worst beauty mistakes?

Chatting to my mum this afternoon and we started laughing about the first time I used eyelash curlers.
This was the days before false eyelashes.
I applied my make up and then applied my mascara as usual. I had no idea how to use them, so I clamped the curlers on tight on my still wet mascara for a few seconds, I mean, you apply hair curlers to damp hair right?
Tried to release them and found to my horror that they were well and truly welded to my eyelashes!
MUUUUUM.....
Mum ran upstairs thinking I was being murdered to find me walking into walls holding the curlers.
She grabbed a flannel, wet it, rubbed soap on it, then started running it over my eye.
Eventually freed them, along with half of my eyelashes and my eye looking like I'd got the world's worst case of conjunctivitis.
To be fair, once I'd stopped crying, my other eye was a perfect match.
So, care to share your worst beauty disasters?
The curlers went in the bin.

@Alargeoneplease89 sorry but 😂

@Pebblesflintstoneandbambamrubble that reminds me of when I was around 12 and i cut my sister's fringe. I cut it so short that she looked like friar tuck. My mum went barmy. That was the end of my budding hairdressing career.

Jackie magazine had a lot to answer for when it came to beauty 😂

Plucking eyebrows. Doesn't help they are also naturally at noticeably different levels. After years of eyebrow pencil had them micro bladed. Evened them up perfectly and no need for pencil.
Got the best microblader in miles nearby, happy to give details but this isn't an advert so won't put on here. Never had Botox or a tattoo so was very reluctant and scared to be honest.
It's changed my life, honestly!

So many Sun In stories here 😂 my friend used to comb some through every morning, her Dad unknowingly used her comb which she kept in the bathroom to comb back his hair, we observed it gradually going orange and he had no idea why! She eventually moved the comb and never did own up 😂

I used to shave my eyebrows because plucking hurt to much. One is still way shorter 😭😭

Blue astringent Clearasil lotion on one single spot as a young teen. I am austistic and was upset because I thought I was dirty. I chemically burned my chin and had to use sudacreme for a week! When I was older, I squeezed an under the skin spot so hard I bruised myself very badly same reason as the Clearasil. I was 19 and had an interview at one of the ancient universities, DM was convinced the admissions people would think I had been fighting and wouldn't offer me a place. (They did) but I am from a rough part of Manchester and a very WC background. Luckily, I grew out of spots.

For the Over pluckers the Ordinary eyebrow serum is very good.

Used a Footner chemical peel about a week or two before a hospital appointment, feet started peeling and looked a bit gross. Went into see the consultant and he said pop your shoes and socks off and lay on the bed, I gulped and said can I keep my socks on? He asked why and I explained, but was told don't worry I'm a Dr I've seen all sorts. So I took my socks off and he burst out laughing and said "yeah your right that's revolting" luckily we get on well so had a good laugh with him about it

Mistymist · 25/08/2023 18:52

Thin eyebrows - they ruined all my photos they've never grown back!

Hair extensions- my scalp was itching so badly I had to scratch it constantly.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 25/08/2023 19:03

I ruined my eyebrows in the late 90s too. They have never recovered, sadly.

mrstea301 · 25/08/2023 19:06

Loving these, having a proper giggle at them!

I had a bit of a disaster at my best friends wedding - got a spray tan but ended up having to get it done on Thursday for a wedding on Saturday, hoping it would be fine, just got a light one!

It was fine, but I take a spray tan REALLY well so it developed tremendously, I looked like I'd been on a tropical holiday for a month. Which would have been fine, but out of four bridesmaids, only two of us got spray tans, and the two that didn't, were naturally very pale. As in, one of them had ginger hair and basically glowed in the dark! So we had to carefully coordinate throughout the day so that we were mixed up and not standing in two pairs 😂

Blarn · 25/08/2023 19:10

Touche Eclat over most of my face. Must have 'glowed'! And the expense!

CloseItAgain · 25/08/2023 19:23

Did a bikini wax without reading the instructions. Didn't 'taut' the skin and ended up bruising every pore. I looked like I have a VD

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 25/08/2023 19:25

@Blarn I remember seeing ads for TE in magazines and thinking it was really glamourous. Out of my price range even now!

NameChangeEmbarressed · 25/08/2023 19:26

Starting to use hair straighteners on my lovely curly hair. 20 plus years later and my hair is a ruined frizz ball

Lagershandy · 25/08/2023 19:28

In the early 70s I plucked my eyebrows into the thin line that was so fashionable then. My Mum went absolutely mental, and went on and on about it, so much so I never plucked them again apart from a tidy up.

Now in my late 60's I still proudly sport lovely luscious eyebrows, obviously there are a few grey ones in there, but I leave it up to my beautician to look after my brows.

I have thick coarse hair so when I had a perm I looked more like Crystal Tipps than Farrah Fawcett!

Plucking my gorgeous, luscious natural eyebrows into oblivion in the late 90s / early 00s… and now I can’t grow them back again 😭😭😭

Nothing changes, I did the same in the 70s. I look VERY surprised on my 6th form photo.

KrazyboutKillian · 25/08/2023 19:40

After being out and having a few glasses of vino I decided that would be the perfect time to apply fake tan . after applying
. I fell into bed ( literally) , in the morning I looked like I had been tie dyed

had to wear long sleeves and trousers in work for a week

Eastcoaster · 25/08/2023 19:49

I had cystic acne when I was in my early twenties. Someone told me nizoral shampoo dabbed on the spots would help. I went a bit crazy and used far too much. My skin pretty much burned and was hard and scaly to the touch! Moisturiser just melted on the top of it 🤢My mum took me to the doctor who just shaked her head in despair 🙈 and I had to take a week off work as I just couldn’t go to work like that. I still can’t believe my skin recovered afterwards. Luckily I got Roaccutane not long after!

bakewellbride · 25/08/2023 19:53

Awful fake tan on my legs age 14. It was horrible on my ankles!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/08/2023 20:03

I’ve got more. In the 70s in Australia there was this stuff called Magic Silver White. You put a few drops in water and rinsed your hair. Much loved by older ladies a la Dame Edna. My friend told me to put about 15 drops in. For very blonde hair. Just say I was the 1972 precursor to punk in my little suburban school. Mum made me go with purple hair. Also found out you can’t really colour blonde hair copper that year.
The perms. I wanted lovely pre raphaelite curls. Crystal tipps.
Falling down my aunt’s terrace house stairs in my platform shoes.

Buildingthefuture · 25/08/2023 20:04

Plucking my eyebrows into what can only be described as the McDonald’s “M” then pencilling them in, in black eyebrow pencil. I am naturally blonde. This look is forever preserved in my Mothers wedding photos, so that’s nice 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Deciding to save a few quid and fake tan myself, rather than having a spray tan. Bought St Tropez plus special mitt (so actually saved NO money?) thought I’d done a really good job. In the morning, resembled a full on patchy Oompa Loompa but had to go to a work conference. One woman asked me if I had liver disease 🤣🤣🤣🤣

BillyAndTheSillies · 25/08/2023 20:13

Eyebrow lamination. I have thick eyebrows, it looked ridiculous.

Not realising I shouldn't have any waxing done when using retinoids - or at least stop for 5-7 days before hand. Got my face waxing done a few days before a huge event and basically ripped the skin off around my eyebrows, lip and chin. It oozed and crusted for about 10 days.

I put facial Veet on my downy facial hair. It completely burnt my lower face.

Yes it is very harsh

Love this thread , but I don't really have any beauty mishaps except for when a friend and I decided to shave our pits for the fist time with her dad's electric shaver . It hurt and stung all night long (sleepover)🙈 .
Being a young female is such a minefield 😂 .
