People used to shrug more when I was younger. Im sure if it.
I never see people shrugging anymore. I don't shrug either.
Do you shrug?

Bring back shrugging!!

There’s a campaign in this…

Fingerlimes · 25/08/2023 08:19

Excellent thread! Have had several in bed shrugs already. Practising different facial expressions / shrug combos now 😂. This could become a new trend !

Draconis · 25/08/2023 08:26

@bladebladebla1 that's fascinating that your cute 5 yr old naturally knew to shrug to convey his message and you had to get clarification.
The question is have you lost the art of shrugging into adulthood or did you never have it?

You'll be glad to know it's alive and well in schools. Usually followed by an "I dunno."

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 25/08/2023 08:46

I'm Jewish and have loads of Jewish friends. We all shrug loads. And enjoy it too! 🤷‍♀️

anunlikelyseahorse · 25/08/2023 08:54

I think it's being replaced with they eye roll. Even emojis are becoming more 🙄 than 🤷‍♀️.

LaMarschallin · 25/08/2023 09:02

Interesting.

I'd never pictured 🤷‍♀️ (which I use quite a lot - 🙄 seems potentially more rude) as a shrug.
I see it as a "palms up 'What can you do, eh?' " kind of thing.

Although...
Now I try it out, I realise it is accompanied by a shoulder twitch.

Barfvader · 25/08/2023 09:13

I did some shrugging on the toilet. Definitely made for a more whimsical poo.

WeeMadArthur1 · 25/08/2023 09:15

My teens seem to communicate solely through the medium of shrug.

I agree with a PP, I think my shoulders are too permanently tensed up to be able to do a decent shrug. I'm going to practice today though, maybe do some warming up first so as not to do myself a shrugging injury. And then I'll shrug at the kids when they ask what's for tea. 😂😀

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/08/2023 09:18

I've been doing a lot of calls with a French project team over the last few months. They are professionals at it, with added sound effects!!!

You are right. Must shrug more. The word 'shrug' has lost all meaning now that I have read it so many times in the thread ... Shrug shrug shrug.

To me it mostly means a little cardigan or jacket to be worn over a strappy dress!

Very good question. I think I've lost it. I shall endeavour to bring it back

Need more info.
Like shrug in a I dunno way
A meh way
A sigh way ?

Just for info and in the effort to keep Britain shrugging, I managed proper shrug with a meh today. Very proud.

Coralie1 · 25/08/2023 21:15

Oh I see it all the time but I have French and Jewish family, so shrugging is an Olympic sport for us.

CeriB82 · 25/08/2023 21:22

Im a huge shugger. Love a hood shrug. Usually at work when I want to say “i dont give a fuck”

sheworemellowyellow · 25/08/2023 21:27

Shrugging is delightfully non-passive aggressive, and honestly expressive. Perhaps that’s why children deploy them so readily? I think you kind of grow out of shrugging.

Personally, I always serve my “I dunno”s with a helping of “and I don’t care”, or “why are you asking me?!”. It’s rare that I’m genuinely baffled these days, in a totally unknowing, non-cynical way.

Desecratedcoconut · 25/08/2023 21:28

I'm a shrugger, a tutter and an eye-roller. How else are people supposed to know that I'm not bothered, I don't want to and that they are ridiculous?

eastiseastwestiswest · 25/08/2023 21:30

This is an excellent excellent thread.

I think you're right. I used to shrug a lot, I just had a little practice and it seemed unfamiliar. I'm also in public so probably looked a bit odd Grin

I think I tend to do a sort of downturned mouth, slightly raised eyebrows slight head tilt now instead of a shrug. It's less weird looking than it sounds. I hope.

OMG yes!

Spywoman · 25/08/2023 21:36

I love a shrug. Why wouldn't you. It has a range of meanings. Mind you I use my hands a lot too. And if only I could raise one eyebrow at a time my life would be complete 😂

Oh yeah, I do a good, one-eyebrow incredulous too. I'm a passive aggressive powerhouse.

I'm so jealous. Were you born with the talent or did you have to perfect it in front of the mirror?

Desecratedcoconut · 25/08/2023 21:43

I was born with it. Unfortunately it is a talent that has etched some impressive wrinkles on my forehead.

The thing you also need to do to master the perfect French/Jewish/Italian shrug is to let a kind of half-blow of air out your mouth while you're shrugging. My dad's is almost comical, he kind of purses his bottom lip first, blows a bit of air then the shoulder fly.

@Desecratedcoconut I'm so envious, I used to try this in front of a mirror but have never been able to do it. It's always struck me as being like tongue rolling, either you can or can't.

Well if you'd spent as much time as I did as a child in front of a mirror being Spock (Leonard Nimoy) you'd be quite accomplished.
