A TV show you really wanted to like...

But just couldn't.
I really wanted to love World On Fire. It seemed really up my street but Lois is so annoying that it's put me right off. There seems to be no depth to any of the characters and Harry seems like an AI person. I could just about hang on for season 2 but the awful green screen in the desert has put me right off.

Interesting to see my two have been mentioned already.
Detectorists and Gentleman Jack.

MrsRachelDanvers · 23/08/2023 06:59

Gentleman Jack was awful. Tried to like Ozarks and Schitts Creek.I’m watching Peaky Blinders because Cillian Murphy but the plotting and dialogue are awful covered up by slick production and the formidable talents of CM and the rest of the cast. Series 1 was good but jumped the shark once it started with the Russians and cartoon assassins. We’ve just stopped and are watching Dopesick instead. Haven’t got Apple but would like to try Ted Lasso.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 23/08/2023 07:19

Schitts Creek - I gave it a good go but just didn't get into it. Also hated Game of Thrones.

Loved Breaking Bad, one of the best series I've ever seen.

Thought we’d love Yellowstone. But just can’t care about any of the characters - not even KC!

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 23/08/2023 07:43

Happy Valley.

The first two series completely passed me by, so when the third one arrived and everyone it seemed was all OMG HAPPY VALLEY IT’S THE BEST, OMG YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT?!! OMG!

I dutiful sat dow, fully committed to seeing the most incredible tv series ever written with acting that was going to blow me away.
Got to the second episode of series two and thought, quietly and privately to myself, this isn’t very good.

A friend accidentally spoiled the ending of series 3 and I knew then it wasn’t for me as I couldn’t have cared less what happened to any of them.

MeinKraft · 23/08/2023 07:44

I was bereft when I finished Ghosts, so I tried to watch the US version. It was really awful, the hammy overacting and the making every joke really obvious. No subtleties at all.

Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor Who. I actually think she did what she could as an actor but Chibnall’s dog’s breakfast of a script and overcrowded cast gave no chance for any real character development.

This. She's fine. Chibnall's terrible.

LunaNorth · 23/08/2023 07:47

Ted Lasso. I made it through series 1, but he reminds me so much of Ned Flanders that I couldn’t enjoy it properly, and the script was as clunky as hell.

Breaking Bad. Just absolutely gross and grim. Needed a shower in Dettol after watching the first episode.

LunaNorth · 23/08/2023 07:47

Also Line of Duty. Preposterous.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 23/08/2023 07:49

Controversial but for me it was Wednesday! I watched the first episode and gave up.

LunaNorth · 23/08/2023 07:51

Agree with Gentleman Jack. Suranne Jones seems to be enjoying herself so much she’s forgotten she’s not in a panto. So mannered.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 23/08/2023 07:57

Gentleman Jack was disappointing. Abusive controlling woman is rude to everyone and we are supposed to applaud her. I thought Mad Men looked great, but didn't make it past episode 2. Yellowstone is full of characters that have no redeeming features, or development, so really don't care if they live or die.

Love love love detectorists though!

KinellMate · 23/08/2023 07:59

When people say "so mannered" what do you mean? Is it that they're overacting?

lastseasonstop · 23/08/2023 08:03

I found with Yellowstone you had to watch the first 3 or 4 episodes to get into it. I started to watch a couple of times but switched off. Couldn’t get into it to begin. Then I had Covid and tried again and then loved it.

dressedforcomfort · 23/08/2023 08:04

GoT - watched the first series but got too uncomfortable with it and the constant rapey-ness of it. I don't know if that calmed down but it felt a bit like it was making distressing sexual behaviour entertaining.

I completely agree with you over this.

Not over-acting per se, but acting in a non-naturalistic way, enunciating the dialogue in such a way as to make it clear that it's written dialogue, like you're in an Oscar Wilde play. It's not necessarily a bad thing, eg if you actually are in an Oscar Wilde play. But it's not to everyone's taste.

Willmafrockfit · 23/08/2023 08:10

last series of line of duty
latest series of call the midwife

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/08/2023 08:10

Good Omens series 2. Felt the deep loss of Terry Pratchett all over again.

Came on to say exactly this. So disappointing!

Also the Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who. Just awful. I didn't much like the Peter Capaldi ones either.

Willmafrockfit · 23/08/2023 08:10

world on fire, had to get through the second series just because

MelonsOnSaleAgain · 23/08/2023 08:11

Another for Succession. Wanted to love it but just didn’t. Watched series 1 and wondered why I’d lasted that long!

I'm a massive Ghosts fan, was disappointed in the US version but did watch the whole series some funny bits but it didn't have the same heart as the original.

Catsmere · 24/08/2023 03:56

All the Dr Who series after Tennant left.
Vera. Every other story was a female serial killer. There's fiction and there's just ridiculous.
New Tricks after James Bolam left.
Wire in the Blood.
The Crown.
Star Trek Discovery. I so wanted to watch a series with Jason Isaacs but didn't even last long enough to see him.

Was also disappointed with the Harry Potter franchise, they made such a hash of the books - and I wasn't wild about the books, having come to them as an adult. I mainly watched because Alan Rickman ❤️ (and they screwed up the funniest moment of Chamber of Secrets by giving Filch the "he's behind you" line, thus taking the punchline and the point of the scene away).

Most of the series listed here I've never heard of and certainly never looked at.

Challenge Annika

I hated it growing up!!

LAHallucinations · 24/08/2023 04:38

Intelligence. I love Nick Mohammed, I love David Schwimmer, I'm a huge sitcom fan. But I just couldn't get into this at all. Not a patch on Episodes (if we're comparing British sitcoms with a Friends actor in the starring role).
