Not sure if this has been done before (or done to death even), so apologies if so!

A thread to ask those burning questions and mundane ponderings. Anyone can ask or answer anything. Please no making things up though as that will spoil the fun!

I'll go first... Vegans. I completely understand the ethics of not eating and using animal produce that results in the harm or death of animals. I understand in particular the cruelty of the dairy industry. However, I am genuinely curious as to what the ethical issue is with free range eggs. For example, if someone raised hen's as pets, on their land, fed them good food etc. Then surely the unfertilised eggs laid are nothing more than a waste product and there is no cruelty involved? (I am genuinely curious and not trying to be inflammatory. I know Google exists but first hand experience and accounts are much more interesting).

Thank you and feel free to add your own!

No idea about eggs!

My question is - why do babies like you to hold them while standing up? The can be in exactly the same position but you sit down and they yell.

Whenthepartysover · 22/08/2023 12:16

I am vegetarian not vegan. However I know lots of vegan people and their reasoning is that the eggs aren't ours. They're not for us. They don't want to eat or use anything that has come from animals, it doesn't matter if the animal wasn't harmed, the fact is that those eggs aren't ours to take. If the eggs are unfertilised the hens usually eat them themselves as they get nutrition for them. They laid the eggs and people "steal" them. We have lots of other things to eat, and don't need to take from animals.

I eat eggs myself so I'm probably not the correct person to answer it anyway but when I've asked the question to lots of vegans in the past this has always been their answer

I’m not vegan but have had this exact discussion with a vegan friend.

Her answer was that for her consuming any animal product is wrong in itself- it’s not a question of whether it causes suffering. We should not see other animals as a resource (and that includes not breeding them to keep as pets although she’s fine with rescues) and keeping pet hens and eating the eggs is that, whether the hens suffer or not. She likened it to eating human flesh- if someone has died it doesn’t cause them any harm to eat them and may even be efficient and environmentally friendly, but (for all sorts of reasons) we see it as wrong- our fellow humans are not a resource to be consumed. For her, that’s what eggs are like.

Whateverfuckingnext · 22/08/2023 12:31

@YouHoooo ah I actually know the answer to this on a VERY basic level. I'm sure someone could explain it better. But, when in the standing position the baby on an instinctive level recognises it as a position of fleeing from/being ready to flee from danger and therefore feels safer. Suppose it's like how some reflexes like the grasp reflex are still there despite not really being needed anymore.

@Whenthepartysover thank you for that. I never considered that the chickens will eat the eggs!

@TheInseparables interesting thank you. Answers like this shed light for me on why vegans have a reputation of being very "forceful" in their beliefs. It's exactly that isn't it? A belief system, and a way of living very mindfully and I suppose respectfully. Much more nuanced than just not eating animal product.

How do they know they're not for us. The hens might be laying them as gifts. Smile

I only take the ones with ribbons and gift tags

If my periods presented themselves so beautifully I'd have been happy to offer them up to others Wink

If an ambulance drives past an accident can it stop or does it need to be told to go?

Dinobooklover · 22/08/2023 14:04

I'm a vegan. I don't eat free range eggs - and wouldn't eat them even if I kept hens. Veganism is about avoiding animal exploitation as much as possible.

Hens are only meant to lay a small number of eggs a year in spring. Farming changed that.

The less eggs you take from hens, the fewer they will lay. Laying a lot of eggs puts a lot of strain on their bodies too. Therefore from a vegan perspective, it's still animal exploitation.

I hope that's satisfied your curiosity!

It can stop & let control know what it's doing

MorrisZapp · 22/08/2023 14:08

Do prisoners listen to true crime podcasts?

Houseneedsalift · 22/08/2023 14:08

Does anyone who has a mega clean house have stuff ? Is decluttering the only answer? I fear it is

ChipshopPickledEgg · 22/08/2023 15:57

What's the secret to bring a switched on Mum? That also works pretty much full time? But also making sure your house isn't a shit tip, you somehow have some sense of relationship still and perhaps manage to maintain a few friendships. I haven't got a pissing clue.

MeinKraft · 22/08/2023 15:59

Switched on mum Is a priority. But it doesn't have to be constant.
Combine being a switched on mum with cleaning "come on, darling offspring, teamwork!"

Connecting is key to relationship and friendships. Connections are verbal, physical and virtual. Keep connecting and make time to meet.

They tend to be a bit on the short side so appreciate being picked up so they can see further. It's instinctive behavior from the times when humans had to watch out for tyranosauruses sneaking up on them.

Failingatthemoment · 22/08/2023 16:21

If the UK only produces 2% of the worlds carbon emissions /.pollution, how much difference does it actually change in the grand scheme of things?
Yes, i get ANY reduction is a good thing, but is the rest of the world the the world doing bugger all.

Mysterian · 22/08/2023 16:22

My question:
If Darth Vader had a baby with a Stormtrooper would the baby turn out grey?

Coronationstation · 22/08/2023 16:22

Newgolddream70 · 22/08/2023 16:02

What would a penguin wear to a black tie do?

A bow tie for the boys and a string of pearls for the lady penguins.
