Does anyone else not like Dublin?

First time in Dublin over the weekend and didn't get the hype
Really expensive (2 drinks 25 euro )
Some places in the city centre quite smelly /dirty
Some people rude especially on busses
I was paying my fare and they just pushed past me to tap the pass
I just don't get the hype of it

OP posts:

I'm going for the third time in a few weeks with ds who is 15. I'm hoping it's going to be good. But no pub crawls so I'm also hoping to eat cheap ( he is talking about Greg's, is there a Greg's?)

I was also looking at travelling yo giants causeway and Belfast either on a tour or hiring a car. Bad idea?

Love the open top bus tours too.

I don't believe a word of this 😂

The way you talk about us Irish is disgraceful and blatant lying. You didn't report what he said to a manager? I know it didn't happen but if you wanted to make it believable you should have pretended you reported him. No-one who said that in front of guests would keep their job.

I have English neighbours, DH works with a few English people, I have English cousins who visit Ireland at least once a year...no-one here hates them. I'm not in Dublin but still...your story didn't happen.

Wow. You said "no one here hates them here".

How arrogant of you to speak for an entire nation of millions of people. Seriously.

Also you are discounting the English people on this thread who said that they received hostility and abuse in Ireland.

As i remember : one last on here said that she got hostility in Ireland when they heard her English accent.

Are you calling a liar too? Wow

Did you read the tall tale in the hotel? 😂

It absolutely did not happen. Therefore all her other posts and stories should be taken with a pinch of salt.

How do you know it didn't happen? What it makes it unbelievable to you exactly?

The anti British comment? Why is that unbelievable to you? Do you that doesn't happen at all in Ireland.? Really?

The receptionist did say it. He was sitting in the lounge with us. He had talked to us all at check in and we were all Irish people in the room. That is why he said the remark in front of us, when something about England came on the tv

Because He didn't know that my dad was English.

What happened to the receptionist who declared "the English - they're all a bunch of bastards" in a hotel in front of people? How disgusting of you to make up such an absurd story.

Can you actually believe some of these comments, how they would sound in any other context. "You're lying. There are no racists. I know this because I'm not a racist. Your experience of racism is entirely in your head. It never happened".

Exactly!

They are saying "your experience of racism didn't happen"

It's Bizarre and also kind of abusive.

It's very dismissive and its disrespectinf people's experiences.

To continue to abuse someone , you deny and discount their experience of abuse. And you call them a liar.

It perpetuates the culture of abuse. It's dismissive and sneery.

If an Indian man came on here and said that he experienced racist abuse in Ireland, would you call him a liar?

There is no way I would call him a liar

Christ almighty.

Can you make an intelligent argument and actually say why you think I'm lying about this. You know - give a reasonable explanation as to why you think I'm lying about this.

You just saying "you're lying because I say you are " is extremely juvenile.

Give me a reason why you think I'm lying.

Galtygirl · 22/08/2023 20:24

It's the sheer number of these stories you have in your repertoire @Mooshamoo - over many, many threads now - that make them unbelievable. It reached the point of absurdity quite some time ago I'm afraid. I don't believe a word you say anymore either, sorry.

I've already clearly stated why I think you're lying in my other reply to you, which you did not answer. I'm not repeating it a 3rd time. You clearly CAN'T answer it.

@LookItsMeAgain I agree with you re Dublin City Council and its leadership.
It makes me sad to see what has happened to my home town.
I rarely go in.
Hate the vibe.
I'd love to go to the theatre and concerts in the city but just wouldn't feel safe, would be on edge after parking the car and walking to and from the venue.
Not enough visible police presence.
Drug dealing.
People stoned
Organised begging.
It's such a shame.
And the government and city councillors don't seem to care.
I'm so ashamed too when tourists are attacked.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 22/08/2023 20:29

I went about 13 years ago...felt very unsafe and a local lady told us she had been mugged going to her dentist in broad daylight.

I know for a fact it didn't happen. I'm not replying to you again. Going by other posters replies to you, you clearly have form for these tales. I'm not saying other peoples stories are all made up but yours certainly are.

Of course I would have a lot of experiencea. I am half English and half Irish, and grew up in Ireland - it would make me have a lot of experiences.

The same as the other lady who posted on this thread. She was half English , half Irish , and she grew up in Ireland, she also had a lot of experiences.

I'm always going to talk about what I saw.

You can't discount anyone elses experiences.

Thats extremely immature and nasty of you. If you discount other people's experiences of abuse and racism, you are not someone I would want to talk to.

And believe me, I will be glad that "you don't reply to me"

Wakintoblueskies · 22/08/2023 20:35

A couple of years ago, I went to the Gaiety theatre in the city centre in the supposed ‘better’ part of the city. The show finished approx 10pm. I walked to get a bus from the quays, I have rarely felt so unsafe. People coming right up to my face, shouting things at me, it was so intimidating. Filthy streets. Never again.

NCIrishEnglish · 22/08/2023 20:48

@Mooshamoo
I'm the PP you're talking about. I don't know what other threads PPs are referencing that you've been on, but in terms of this thread right here: I believe you.

I think those of us who are half Irish and half English who grew up experiencing this are in a difficult place. On the one hand we have the 100% Irish telling us our experiences didn't happen, on the other hand we have the English who had a pubbing weekend in Dublin to experience the craic who had a great time also telling us it didn't happen.

I don't know about you but for me my vehemence about this comes from a place of hurt. I feel deeply rejected and alienated from a whole side of myself. Mt dad bless him was urging me to move back and when I told him the aggression I experienced was the main reason I didn't want to he told me times had changed and it was different now, lo and behold I went out fir a smoke at the pub where we were having lunch and got some hassle from a (granted drunk) dude, my dad went out to have a word with him 🤪

Of course it's always possible we are more sensitive than many would be...

I feel sad that the country where half my family are from and live see me as "other", and unfortunately the human brain has a bad way of fixating: you could meet a hundred great people, it only takes one nasty comment to undo it all

Radyward · 22/08/2023 21:02

I dont get the hype either. Far far more beautiful cities to go to as opposed to Dublin and I live an hr outside it. I love belfast tho.
Dublin is really lovely on a sunny day or evening BUT 3 months ago we went to an event in the city centre ( olympia theatre) came out the side door that brings you to an alley off Dame st and i stepped in human excrement. Im Not joking literally poor customers eating pizza at tables just yards away. Absolutely disgusting.
Its reportedly unsafe now in Temple bar- according to the media. I didnt find that now but there are plenty of rough looking Scobies about.
There is lack of policing
Lack of street cleaning/ rubbish disposal etc etc
The justice minister is being lambasted at the moment and has sort of dropped her hate speech bill due to it ( halleluah).
Few irish want to join the police = huge issue with recruitment.
Its v v expensive and not particularly pretty. BUT most irish people are lovely.
A few weeks back an american tourist only a day in the place made a rookie error and booked a hotel in Talbot street ( kip of a place= unsafe at best of times) set upon by teenagers and a major police station yards away. Poor man was very bady hurt= in the neuro unit of one of the major hospitals in Dublin= huge outcry= his son had a go fund me. Honestly random people donated apologising for ireland 🇮🇪 ah god. The whole country was horrified- ordinary decent people disgusted.

Going to Noel Gallagher on sunday in a park on the outskirts of Dub. Cant wait!! So its not putting me off BUT ill never set foot in the Olympia theatre again.
If you come to Dublin. You can really enjoy it and have a great time if you go to proper old irish pubs and know the areas to avoid

it's such a shame, and many UK cities are similar. In stark contrast to when I was in Hamburg recently and they had a classical music concert right in Town Hall Market. It was packed and everyone was raptly enjoying the music - there was a seated, ticketed bit but lots of us just standing behind that. People were enjoying beers but not getting wasted. It was so lovely I actually had tears in my eyes. Wish it could be more like that here.

Radyward · 22/08/2023 21:09

@walkintoblueskies
The quays are totally scary. Id be afraid to get a bus from there at night.

Im ashamed to be irish too when visitors are attacked.
T bar is full of refugees and homeless BUT ( totes off topic )I also love the new ireland of first generation immigrants. So proud of rashidah the teen irish runner. Well done her. Ireland is enriched by new people too but Dublin City management is a joke - the usual zero accountability. Myself and DH used to love to head to Dublin for food and a people watch but havent in months!!!!
Like i think alot of capitol cities have gone to the dogs- in Rome last year - lots of homeless and beggars

LemonDrizzleDessert · 22/08/2023 21:20

It didn’t happen on the quays. It happened when I was walking towards them. The street after Trinity college.
But it started outside the Gaiety - the number of drunk/homeless people. It felt lawless and very unsafe.

BattleofBeamfleot · 22/08/2023 21:29

I used to love Dublin as a teen and as a student. Last time I visited it to stay overnight in the city - only last year, I spotted a human poo left on O'Connell Street.

I don't understand how such a large main street in a capital city is so full of junkies and so dangerous to walk down at night. I'd love to love Dublin again, but every time I visit I can't get over how shabby it is.

JudgeAnderson · 22/08/2023 21:31

@LemonDrizzleDessert thank you 😊

EarringsandLipstick · 22/08/2023 21:59

Chuckling a bit at Dubliners being so anti English when the rest of Ireland refer to Dubliners as "West Brits".

Nonsense. That's not the definition or usage of the term 'West Brits'.

Honestly the nonsense on this thread.

Regarding the visit to the Gaiety, j agree this shouldn't happen - however, you're incorrect to say it's located in a 'better' area. It's city centre, close to Temple Bar / Capel St & I wouldn't go from there to the quays either. I wouldn't feel unsafe, it would just be raucous & full of eejits.

I suppose that's the difference, when you live in a place you know where to avoid / navigate / go to. I've been in cities in the UK I haven't liked but appreciate I probably only saw a small part without local knowledge. '
