Does anyone else not like Dublin?

First time in Dublin over the weekend and didn't get the hype
Really expensive (2 drinks 25 euro )
Some places in the city centre quite smelly /dirty
Some people rude especially on busses
I was paying my fare and they just pushed past me to tap the pass
I just don't get the hype of it

But @Beverlysparty if they hated English people why would they invite them to their party?

I've no idea. But they seem to feel they were being stared at and ignored because they were British.

We were in Dublin, stayed that night and left first thing in the morning. Said goodbye to parents, friend and his girlfriend. No offer of any breakfast or a drink. Got the hell out of there.

Yeah...perhaps the hosts (the parents) thought you were cheeky and presumptuous turning up like that expecting bed and board? Possibly they were complaining about the situation to friends and family, which would explain the atmosphere?
I'd say that's much more likely to be the case than that they were all rabid English-haters!

Darkherds · 22/08/2023 17:34

And at face value it does seem quite presumptuous tbh.

JaneJeffer · 22/08/2023 17:38

And no breakfast is very unusual. We like to stuff visitors to the gills!

Darkherds · 22/08/2023 17:47

Absolutely! Pp is right she wasn't made welcome, but I have a feeling she could be misunderstanding the reasons why...

Me.

dull, expensive and dirty. We have a flat there but I rarely visit.

Not another absentee landlord? The reason it is such an expensive kip with social problems.

We were invited over to stay a couple of weeks or so before the birthday party. You are being presumptuous saying they were complaining about the situation to family and friends. In actual fact the parents stayed inside while we were sat outside. I’m not exaggerating, it felt like a hostile atmosphere. We didn’t do or say anything to antagonise anyone. It just felt horrible. Whatever their problem with us was I’ll never know. We never heard from our friend and his girlfriend again.

Rogerstreasures · 22/08/2023 18:15

Obviously I know it takes all sorts, and I’m sure Ireland has lovely people just like the rest of the world. All I’m saying is my experience of the place wasn’t nice at all.

millypeggyandpandora · 22/08/2023 18:16

Visited twice, but never again. There is a weird vibe to the place

talk about leaping to conclusions. Dh lives there.

Abhannmor · 22/08/2023 18:34

Belfast is way cheaper. You may feel safer in places where the pavements are painted red , white and blue. City centre pretty safe in fairness

mathanxiety · 22/08/2023 18:45

@Rogerstreasures

But who exactly was the person issuing the invitation?

Was it the parents of the girlfriend, in whose house you stayed?

Was it the boyfriend, who had no right whatsoever to invite you?

mathanxiety · 22/08/2023 18:48

Ok, ignore that question as you've answered it.

MeinKraft · 22/08/2023 18:55

'No matter how much I point out to Irish people that hating all English people doesn't make any sense, and that the people born in England today have nothing to do with what their ancestors did , it doesn't seem to get through to them'

You mean Irish people don't like English people patronising them about their own country's history and relationship with neighbouring nations? I can't imagine why! Hmm

Im half Irish half English,

I've lived in Ireland most of my life.

Yes I certainly do call out anti - English hatred when I see it.

I stayed in a hotel recently in Ireland. Something about England was in the news.

The male receptionist said "the English - they're all a bunch of bastards". I said "excuse me, my dad is English, and he is a lovely man".

I've heard comments like that many many times. And if you ever ask those Irish people why they hate English people it's always ",because of what the English did to us in the past".

I just think it makes no sense whatsoever, to hate current people because of what their ancestors did. It makes no sense!

Just because you are born on a patch of land, it does not mean that you have anything to do with what people from that patch of land did a hundred years ago

I don't believe a word of this 😂

The way you talk about us Irish is disgraceful and blatant lying. You didn't report what he said to a manager? I know it didn't happen but if you wanted to make it believable you should have pretended you reported him. No-one who said that in front of guests would keep their job.

I have English neighbours, DH works with a few English people, I have English cousins who visit Ireland at least once a year...no-one here hates them. I'm not in Dublin but still...your story didn't happen.

Personally, I like Dublin a lot. Even better now, having read all the complaints. If its not for some of you, I like it even more.

Anoushkaka · 22/08/2023 19:41

Dublin City is full of foreigner's/refugees who have ruined it. I've lived all my life in Dublin and my family are from the centre of town. I myself live 3km from town. I rarely travel into the city, full of tourists, refugees etc. Dublin is not just Temple Bar, its a tiny part of Dublin and Ireland has so much more to offer. Dublin people rarely socialise in Temple Bar.

That never happened. Cool story though.

MollyRover · 22/08/2023 19:46

Chuckling a bit at Dubliners being so anti English when the rest of Ireland refer to Dubliners as "West Brits".

Irish and English people are mostly accepted by eachother but the dregs of society in both countries don't need an excuse to marginalize someone to make themselves feel better. It's happened to me many times as an Irish person and I've heard Irish people say plenty of nasty things about the English too. Doesn't mean I won't visit England or that I think all English people are anti Irish. I do wish more of the history of the conflict between the two countries was taught at school level in England though.

I would say it's the racist far right who have ruined Dublin. Setting fire to tents, buildings, 'protesting' every minute of the day and making up bullshit stories about 'the foreigners'.

Oh and also the feral, thuggy Irish hoodies who are stabbing tourists and each other.

MollyRover · 22/08/2023 19:48

Oh, just to add, I don't like Dublin either. There used to be some lovely shops/bars/restaurants but the antisocial behaviour and addiction issues have completely taken over at this stage.

NCIrishEnglish · 22/08/2023 19:51

Can you actually believe some of these comments, how they would sound in any other context. "You're lying. There are no racists. I know this because I'm not a racist. Your experience of racism is entirely in your head. It never happened".

Did you read the tall tale in the hotel? 😂

It absolutely did not happen. Therefore all her other posts and stories should be taken with a pinch of salt.
