Does anyone else not like Dublin?

First time in Dublin over the weekend and didn't get the hype
Really expensive (2 drinks 25 euro )
Some places in the city centre quite smelly /dirty
Some people rude especially on busses
I was paying my fare and they just pushed past me to tap the pass
I just don't get the hype of it

@PuttingTheGreen - yea I've never had that happen to me anywhere actually,

But your comments are about Dublin and I've been in Dublin more times than I can count, it's never happened to me.

Dublin is rough to be fair. If I'm ever waiting for a bus in Dublin, some junkie looking like a zombie will always come up to me and ask for change. That never happens to me anywhere else in ireland

HarrietJet · 27/09/2023 20:20

Yeah, that's not peculiar to Dublin, @PuttingTheGreen

PuttingTheGreen · 27/09/2023 20:14

It could, that's true.
However, I'm well travelled and I've never been threatened to be slung through a bar window just for ordering a drink.

Most people in Dublin haven't either, tbf.

Shutupyoutart · 27/09/2023 20:23

Not just you op..I really dislike Dublin as well, much prefer Galway. Don't really understand the hype of Dublin when there are so many fab places to visit in Ireland

ilovepixie · 27/09/2023 20:33

I was there last week for a concert. I enjoyed Dublin. Although seeing security guards in the shops, even small spars was a little strange as we don't really have security in shops up north.

randomjo · 27/09/2023 20:49

Merrion Square, Baggott and Leeson Streets and Grafton Street areas are alot nicer than O'Connell Street area. It's like comparing two different worlds

PuttingTheGreen · 27/09/2023 21:04

@WitheringTights000 I've never been shot, but it doesn't mean that it hasn't happened to someone else.

mathanxiety · 27/09/2023 21:06

The point is that it isn't a regular occurrence....

Very true. Drumcondra, Glasnevin , Portobello all nicer too. You wouldn't go to London and spend 48 hours in Oxford St / Leicester Square drinking warm flat lager and being ripped off would you?

Although I did the first time I went over 😂

WitheringTights000 · 27/09/2023 21:24

I think it's a fab city! Living there would be brilliant, mixed reports on whether or not it's affordable

Wakintoblueskies · 27/09/2023 21:36

Drumcondra I would not include Drumcondra. Some areas are ok but on the whole, area around the train station is filthy, and a stones throw from ‘massage shops’ and lots of grotty places going towards Dorset St. It’s difficult to distinguish it from Thomas St as they both have an undercurrent of danger lurking near the surface.

mathanxiety · 27/09/2023 21:42

Agree ^

Abhannmor · 27/09/2023 21:45

Or again as others have said - jump on the Dart to Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey or Howth. More for yer mature MNers though. The kids don't want to waste tavern time on a train. Even 30 mins. I was the same!

Abhannmor · 27/09/2023 21:47

Ps I'm biased re Drumcondra. I know it fairly well.

Wakintoblueskies · 27/09/2023 22:13

The problem with Dublin is that to see any of actual nice parts, you have to leave the city itself. I can’t think of another capital city where this is the standard advice. What’s more is that unless you want to go walking for hours along the coast, there is little to do to fill your days in the nice places either.

I could easily spend hours if not days in one London zone.
I know Dublin is minuscule in comparison but when the usual advice is to leave the city centre to find ‘nice’ places it says it all really.

and as for saying I live/lived in an area - this can make you immune to the reality of your surroundings. I was there again last Saturday. It is in no way nice or safe or clean and I would never recommend it to visitors. Sending someone to Baggot St - why would they do there except keep walking? Or is the answer go to pubs again.

I don’t get the hype for Dublin either. I can only suppose it’s clever marketing.

I don't know about Dublin but this routinely happens in Germany. I deliberately walk around as much as I can when waiting for public transport.

Abhannmor · 29/09/2023 17:03

I doubt we can agree on this ; it's all too subjective. Had a longish trip to England recently - Essex , London , Plymouth, Bristol. Apart from two London boroughs they were all worse than Dublin. And a magnitude of order worse than the rest of Ireland.

Having said that I'm not even a fan of Dublin. Cork or Galway for me.

Mary46 · 29/09/2023 17:36

I live in Dublin its def very rough in parts. We do have some nice park areas. Agree drinks so pricey.

coxesorangepippin · 29/09/2023 17:36

It's like Preston

WitheringTights000 · 29/09/2023 17:37

@Mary46 - if I had enough money to cover rent for a year or so,

Could I live off £2k a month down there?

Mary46 · 29/09/2023 17:55

Yes probably but depending where you rent as rentals can be costly here.

WitheringTights000 · 29/09/2023 18:03

@Mary46 - yea rent seems so pricey. I am apart from rent, so if I had my rent money taken care of/saved ..

2k just for food/going out etc/daily living expenses

Mary46 · 29/09/2023 18:21

2k be fine. Yes food gone up alot here. You can get a leap card for transport.
