In Kharkiv, the UAF wreaked havoc after breaching the defence lines, with small teams in SUVs carrying heavy weapons. They tore around the place shooting up tanks and AFVs and the Russians ended up legging it, in absolute chaos, from basically infantry in cars. Imagine that but with Humvees and Bradleys etc. That's what I expect to happen in the next week or so, once they have the new gap defended.

MissConducUS · 01/09/2023 19:31

Kharkiv was much more lightly defended, but I agree, they don't do well defending against maneuver warfare. It's not something they train for, and it requires coordination across units, which is a problem with the hodgepodge of units they have in the south.

A new video has surfaced of the fighting in the Robotyne-Verbove sector. Russians have lost two tanks on the dirt road. The dragon's teeth of the Surovikin line can be very well seen, and the Ukrainian soldiers can move at least seemingly freely on the road. 1/2

The video was likely taken here in the circled area, in front of the possibly weaker section of the Russian main defence line. During the last few days, no new geolocated material or other verifiable information has indicated major changes in the frontline. 2/2

More detailed report from Euromaidanpress which seems to largely be in line with other reports on twitter:
https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/09/01/frontline-report-ukrainians-launch-offensive-on-verbove-breaching-russian-second-line-of-defense-in-zaporizhzhia-oblast/

Report suggests that activity around Verbove has been more than simply recon.

It does also seem like Ukraine controls the ridgeline to the south/southwest of Verbove. Which means they have some of the tactically higher ground around the town. This isn't Hill 166 as far as I can tell though, though talk on twitter is that that have managed to flank it

More on Hill 166 here:
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/8/31/2190568/-Ukraine-Update-Ukraine-may-be-about-to-flank-Hill-166

Crucially Hill 166 is the last high ground before Tokmak. Everything is downhill from that point.

Having captured Robotyne, Ukraine had two options for a way forward: Continue to drive down the T0408 highway to Tokmak, or try to flank the Russian position at Novoprokopika.

Two things appeared to make a frontal assault down the highway unattractive.
First, there was an intervening smaller defense line between Robotyne and Novoprokopivka that made Russia’s defenses down the highway essentially two layers deep instead of just one. Flanking Novoprokopivka from the east is easier said than done as the Russians control the dominant heights to the south, and a Ukrainian flanking force would be subjected to enfilade fire on its own flanks.
Kastehelmi and the Black Bird Group assessed that the Russian defenses south of Robotyne were aligned to defend both against attacks from the north and from the east. These fortifications were described as “formidable,” featuring covered firing positions, bunkers, vehicle shelters, and more.

Second, the Russian forces chose to concentrate twice as many of their available forces around Novoprokopika, Ilchekove, and Solodka Balka as were distributed across Hill 166 and Verbove. The 76th Guards Air Assault Division was known to have been transferred from the Kreminna area to Tokmak, and there is speculation the arriving units were intended to bolster Russia’s defenses at Hill 166 and Verbove on Russia’s right flank. Three additional regiments of Russia’s 76th GAAD would have largely closed the difference in force allocation between their left and right wings at the Surovikin Line.

Ukraine responded by positioning its two more tired brigades that had been leading the attack towards Robotyne to the west: the 47th Mechanized and 65th Mechanized Brigades. The 47th Mechanized is one of Ukraine’s most powerful brigades, equipped with Bradley Fighting Vehicles and supported by Leopard 2 tanks of the 33rd Mechanized Brigade. The 65th Mechanized Brigade fought alongside the 47th since mid-June and had consistently been part of Ukraine’s efforts to push past the Russian minefields and extensive defenses north of Robotyne.

These two brigades had amply demonstrated their brutal effectiveness in liberating Robotyne, but after nearly 11 weeks of continuous and repeated assaults, it appears the Ukrainian general staff may be giving them a slight breather. As such, the main Ukrainian attack unfolded to the east, led by the 82nd Air Assault and 46th Airmobile Brigades.

The 82nd Air Assault has been called “ridiculously powerful" and is sometimes referred to as the Ukrainian military's finest unit. Equipped with British Challenger 2 Main Battle Tanks, German Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles, and American Stryker IFVs, it is one of the heaviest-equipped brigades in the Ukrainian military. Including NCOs and tank crews handpicked from Ukraine’s 25th and 80th Airborne Brigades, the 82nd represents the cream of the crop of Ukraine’s best soldiers.

The 46th Airmobile Brigade is a comparatively lighter brigade, but it is nonetheless equipped with British Wolfhound, a 17-ton heavily armored Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected 6x6 vehicle designed for front-line tactical support and combat. These are paired with heavily upgraded T-80BV Tanks, among the best Soviet-era tanks in Ukrainian service. A gas-turbine powered variant of the T-80 tank, the T-80BV, is operated exclusively by Ukraine’s Air Assault forces and boasts incredible mobility, albeit at a 33% reduction in fuel efficiency compared to diesel versions of the T-80.

The 82nd and 46th Brigades are both fresh, with their veteran soldiers having been held out of combat for months. (The 82nd is, on paper, newly formed and includes numerous new NATO trained volunteers.) They are being committed to combat for the first time during the counteroffensive.

Also this thread is worth a read in terms of tactics. There are diagrams that accompany the description on the original tweets:

https://twitter.com/Tatarigami_UA/status/1697292450094600531

Tatarigami UA AT Tatarigami_UA
Recently, the Russians released a manual outlining tactics to counter Ukrainian assaults. This guide draws from recent encounters with the 23rd Mechanized Brigade in June and July 2023, particularly during their liberation of Novodarivka and Levadne.Thread:

2/ It's crucial to note that the Russians are presenting their perspective on Ukrainian units and their actions, based on their experience with a single Ukrainian mechanized brigade. This viewpoint should be carefully weighed before extrapolating it to the whole frontline.

3/ Russians describe the following configuration used by Ukrainian units: Assault teams comprise 20 members, divided into four subgroups of five. Two groups are assault subgroups. The third serves as a consolidation subgroup. The fourth functions as a reserve subgroup.

4/ Each 'team of five' must include a machine gunner and a radio operator. The number of grenade launcher operators is determined based on the situation. The recommended intervals and distance between soldiers are 7 meters

5/ Primary functions of the assault subgroups (fives): - 1st assault subgroup: advances forward covertly and engages with the enemy, contains the enemy upon detection, and secures positions once the task is accomplished;

6/ - 2nd assault maintains visual distance with the 1st group, reports passage of the first group's to others, and after 1st "five" initiates firefight, the subgroup performs flank maneuver or rear approach; If the first group retreats, it covers it;

7/ - 3rd (consolidation) subgroup maintains a distance of 50-150m from the 2nd subgroup, aiming to set up positions to consolidate gains. If initial assault fails, they dig in, to facilitate reinforcement for further assault or to cover the retreat of the leading groups;

8/ - The 4th (reserve) subgroup remains within 300m from the 3rd subgroup and forms a hypothetical rear for supply, evacuation, and fire support groups. Ready to serve as reserve, if advance succeeds - it exploit gains, if enemy reserves approach, it moves out to counter them.

9/ The russians underline the successes of this tactic, acknowledging its contribution to capturing russian positions. In response, they stress the efficacy of employing anti-personnel mines, citing the near-impossibility of clearing all mines in such scenarios.

10/ They also recommend establishing deceptive positions that appear genuine, intermittently engaging in fire from these false locations, and simulating activity there. They advise occasional communication device use from these positions.

11/ Russians note that units traveling by foot, particularly those carrying heavy equipment like AGS or mortars, experience rapid physical exhaustion. However, they don't elaborate on how this vulnerability can exploited.

12/ In summary, I'd like to highlight that their Anticipation-Action-Reflection time has notably shortened. This enables them to grasp and adjust to our tactics much faster compared to the past, when it used to take russians months to adapt

13/ Simultaneously, they didn't present an innovative approach to counter these tactics, apart from referencing already employed methods like deploying false positions and mines.

14/ As the war continues, we see fewer large formations and increasing use of small tactical units, which present less visible targets compared to mechanized units. The latter have become frequent targets for FPV drones, ATGM teams and AT mines.

I think there are two reasons for this. First, it’s a deliberate targeting decision to support the counteroffensive. Clearing minefields is not that hard if you’re not being shelled.

Second, cluster munitions are better than normal high explosive rounds for counter battery fire, and the Ukrainians have plenty of them.

Translation of a telegram message, which is being tweeted -

Report by the 46th Brigade soldiers from Robotyne - Verbove area (Zaporizhzhia oblast): "There is an expansion of the bridgehead along the enemy's defense line in the direction of Verbove. The zone of control is being expanded for further actions. Novoprokopivka - fighting for the heights east of the settlement, consolidation of positions northeast of the village. The enemy is moving its reserves to the area. In general, we can say that in the area of Robotyne-Verbove, forces and equipment are being maneuvered in a small area of about 10 km. Both we and the enemy are looking for weaknesses for further action."

The 46th is operating to the south of the 82nd. The 82nd were the group sited in Verbove.

Confirmation that the intention of the 46th is essentially to capture the high ground (more than likely including hill166).

From what is being said on twitter it sounds like Russian reserves are counterattacking and that's slowed things down. They seem to be concerntrated more to the west of this stretch of the front, south of Robotyne but that's keeping the Ukrainians busy.

Suggestions being made that a breakthrough is still a little off as a result, but worth keeping eye on the battle for the higher ground as it's strategically more important.

NOELREPORTS AT NOELreports
"Ukraine has been working on its own missile programme and drones for a long time now, so hitting targets in Russian territory, even if they are located 1,500 km away, is no longer a problem," says Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council.

The US hasn't wanted to give Ukraine longer range missiles as they didn't really want to take the fight to Moscow. With Ukraine doing it anyway, where is the logic in that now?

After Russian assistance that the battle for Robotyne was still ongoing and that they still held parts of the town:

Translation of message reads as follows:
2-9-2023 12:14
On the Zaporzhye front, near the village of Verbove, there is a Ukrainian advance. The foothold between Novoprokopovka and Verbovy Khokhol is successfully explanding. The former commander of the 58th army, Popov, keeps in touch with his former subordinates on the ground and states that all the problems that he reported in his report have only worsened and no one is taking any action to eliminate them.
2-9-2023 12:16
I fully confirm this information. The fact that there was a breakthrough in that area, I knew a week ago. I dare to state the fact that crests are slowly but surely advancing, for that there is a solid "goyda" on TV. Nothing, soon the veil will fail. What they are thinking up there, I personally do not understand. Agree hope? It certainly won't work on our terms.

The general noise is that 'the wedge' between Novoprokopovk and Verbove is widening.

This was also tweeted an hour ago:

Ukrainian forces are moving forward. Despite everything and no matter what anyone says, we are advancing, and that is the most important thing. We are on the move.

There is growing confidence coming from the top now I think.

I know what you mean but my guess is the policy is there for appearances sakes since it allows the US a deniability of sorts....

If Moscow gets smacked with a home grown Ukrainian missile the Biden administration can claim "Wasn't one of ours, absolutely nothing to do with us".

OTOH if Moscow gets smacked with what very much appears to be US missile it might well play to Putin's advantage from a PR POV in some parts of the world and it may well provide more ammunition (almost literally) for those on the fringe of US politics who are not at all keen on any US involvement.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-september-1-2023

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence (GUR) Head Kyrylo Budanov reported that the Russian military deployed elements of a newly created “reserve army” (the 25th CAA) to enable units currently on the frontline in Luhansk Oblast to laterally redeploy to defend against the Ukrainian counteroffensive in southern Ukraine.
  • The 25th Combined Arms Army is unlikely to be combat effective at scale given its rushed deployment, ahead of a previously reported intended deployment date of December 2023.
  • Additional Russian lateral redeployments and the immediate commitment of intended operational reserves suggest that short term reinforcement needs are impeding intended long-term reconstitution efforts.
  • Russian “Vostok” Battalion commander Alexander Khodakovsky continues to highlight the impact of the lack of Russian counter-battery capabilities on Russian morale in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area.
  • Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations near Bakhmut and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and made some advances on September 1.
  • Russian forces conducted offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, along the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line, in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast but did not make any confirmed gains.
  • Russian occupation officials announced on September 1 that voting began for the Russian regional elections held in occupied Ukraine and will continue in various forms through September 10.
  • Russian officials continue efforts to forcibly indoctrinate Ukrainian youth into Russian culture and identity by integrating schools in occupied Ukraine into the Russian educational system.
Ukraine Invasion: Part 44

Noise that Ukrainian forces have entered Zavitne Bazhannya. This is south of Staromaiors'ke in Donetsk Oblast (near Rivnopil). Some people are disputing the geolocation accuracy on this, but there seems to have been some confirmed movement in favour of Ukraine in the vicinity of Rivnopil over the last couple of days more directly south of Rivnopil (rather than directly south of Staromaiors'ke)

This was another front that Ukraine had made some progress in previously - I think Rivnopil was liberated at the end of June. Rivnopil is some 10km north of the main defensive line in this area, this particular settlement is about 2km south of that - so around 8km north of the main defensive line. This is the route toward Mariupol - and there is little defensive points after that line before Mariupol.

It was also a key point as if they are able to more a little more further south Ukraine start being able to hit the main rail line. Thus there is a fair amount of significant strategic importance.

Are there potentially multiple cracks starting to show in Russian lines? Its now a race against time for Ukraine before the mud season kicks in.

Zelenskyy boasts of new long-range weapon days after strikes inside Russia
Kyiv has steadily been extending its ability to hit targets deep behind enemy lines

Ukraine has built a new long-range aerial weapon that can hit targets 700km away, the latest sign that the country is strengthening its nascent arms industry.

The announcement, made by Volodymyr Zelenskyy on social media overnight on Thursday came days after the Kremlin accused Kyiv of launching a strike that hit the Pskov air base, around 700km inside Russia. The attack destroyed at least two Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo planes.

Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s head of intelligence, said on Friday that the strike was carried out from Russian territory. “We are working from the territory of Russia,” he told The War Zone website.

The Ukrainian president did not provide any more details about the new weapon but he said Kyiv was working on further increasing its range.

“The [range] of our weapons, new Ukrainian weapons, is 700km [and] the task is [to extend that] further,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began just over 18 months ago, Kyiv has steadily been extending its ability to hit targets deep behind enemy lines. It has also used foreign-supplied artillery and missile, such as US Himars and British Storm shadow missiles, to hit Russian targets on Ukrainian soil.

However to strike within Russian territory, Ukraine has had to develop homegrown solutions as its western allies have refused to provide it with long range weapons to attack Russia itself.

Last week, Oleksiy Danilov, head of the security council, said a new but unspecified Ukrainian-made cruise missile had hit a Russian air defence system in Russian-occupied Crimea, calling it a “new product . . . absolutely flawless”.
Russian officials said on Friday that their air defences had intercepted several drone attacks in the country’s western regions, with no major damage or injuries reported.

Kyiv has a policy of neither confirming nor denying attacks on Russian soil, which have become an almost daily occurrence.

Drone attacks on Russia have so far been too limited to have had a major military impact; their purpose has been to inflict political and psychological harm, officials and analysts have said. However, that may be changing.

Russia has sunk several cargo ships around the Kerch bridge that links the Russia mainland to the Crimea in order to create a barrier to protect it from a series of recent attacks by Ukrainian marine drones.

Russia may also have redeployed some of its air defence systems from the Kuril Islands, which Japan claims as part of its territory, and moved them to western Russia, according to a report in Japan’s Kyodo News

Yuriy Borisov, head of the Roscosmos space agency, said on Friday that Russia’s new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile complex, is now ready for combat duty.

The Sarmat, Russia’s largest ever ballistic missile, was first tested last year and has been in development for more than a decade. It is designed to carry a payload of up to 10 heavy warheads. Moscow has said that the complex can hit targets 10,000-18,000km away.

Zelenskyy’s remarks about Ukraine’s new long-range weapon comes as Kyiv seeks to ramp up its defence industry to make more weapons on home soil, especially of artillery shells, which are crucial for its counteroffensive.

It has started making Nato-standard 155mm artillery shells, Zelenskyy said this week, “not enough, very little for the front, but it is already many times more than before”.

On Thursday, Kyiv also struck a preliminary deal with British defence company BAE Systems that seeks to eventually produce 105mm light guns, a kind of artillery, within Ukraine.

The British agreement came days after Ukraine and Sweden signed a statement of intent to strengthen co-operation in the production of CV90 armoured vehicles, which are made by a Swedish unit of BAE.

German defence company Rheinmetall has also said that it will open a plant in Ukraine to build armoured vehicles, in association with Ukroboronprom, the Ukrainian state-owned defence group.
