Was invited round for brunch but no sign of anything being served and I'm starving. Didn't have breakfast.

What time is brunch to you?

How is my dear SiL. There really can't be many people who view that as a meal

By any chance were they shut away in the kitchen for ages and you were in another room?.... (they ate without you and that's the left overs!)

Funkyslippers · 20/08/2023 14:04

This is why I hate 'brunch'! I'd rather just have normal breakfast and lunch at the normal time. I was once invited to a friend's house for brunch, I was starving, she served a croissant.

11pm ish

Most places wouldn't serve after 12

11pm?

Might as well just go to bed & try again the next day😁

frippu · 20/08/2023 14:06

@diddl 😆😆

the rule is brunch should be substantial!

Ohmylovejune · 20/08/2023 14:09

Brunch is supposed to be a s* load of dishes! Poor you- must feel.like the first day of a diet!

Hopefully your body has some calories now to survive until you can hit your own fridge!

EvenlyDetermined · 20/08/2023 14:10

Definitely about 11ish, anything after 12 is lunch.

NeedTheSeaside · 20/08/2023 14:11

if I was inviting people for brunch, I'd take their situation into account. I'd say generally though 11am (earlier if they're up with small kids!).

Whilst I love sourdough & hommous, I'd be serving something nicer if I'd invited people for brunch.

as a guest I wouldn't mind much as long as the lattes were on form!

Pluffe · 20/08/2023 14:11

I think it’s between 11-2. It’s not lunch because there’s more of a breakfast theme to it imo! Eggs Benedict, waffles etc. with added booze.

Booze at 11am on a Sunday?! Confused

mondaytosunday · 20/08/2023 14:13

Brunch is around 11 with a nice variety of breakfast foods plus something more substantial. I'd serve pastries, bacon, sausages, breads, fruits and yogurt - like you get at a restaurant buffet.
Brunch is usually instead of breakfast and lunch, not an in between meal, so should be generous.
Hummus and bread is a snack you might have at supper time if you'd had a big roast at Sunday lunch.

gogomoto · 20/08/2023 14:14

I would serve about 11 if I invited people around

Well if you’d read, I said between 11 and 2!

LilyLemonade · 20/08/2023 14:19

Brunch for me starts around 11-12 but it should be all laid out for when people arrive because you’re hungry if you haven’t had breakfast! I’d also serve some hot dishes but these could come after the bread, pastries, fruit, coffee, etc.
i also think booze is fine with brunch even from 11.

AlyssumandHelianthus · 20/08/2023 14:21

It's about 3 hours after you get up, so between 10 and 3pm on the weekend.

Thank you for making me feel like less of an alcoholic 😅

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 20/08/2023 14:22

I think brunch should be at around 11ish. No earlier than 10.30 and no later than 11.30.

And it's two meals replaced with one, so of course it should be substantial.

Bread and houmous past noon does not constitute brunch IMHO. I would be so disappointed in your shoes, OP!

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 20/08/2023 14:23

Brunch to me is anywhere between 10-11.30

Anything after is just lunch surely?

arethereanyleftatall · 20/08/2023 14:27

If this is family and just casual, I reckon they just forgot.

If this is friends and they invited, this is in the batshit realms. For two reasons. Firstly what they served. Secondly, because you have prioritised chatting on your phone to strangers over actual interaction with your friends. (But if it's family, being on your phone is understandable!)

fridaynight1 · 20/08/2023 14:28

Weekday - I'd say 11 -11.30am
A bit later on a Sunday - probably anytime up to 12pm

Gowlett · 20/08/2023 14:32

Imagine inviting someone for hummus & sourdough!
That’s what I snack on if there’s nothing else to eat…

SeaToSki · 20/08/2023 14:32

The last brunch I hosted we had food available from 10am until 1pm and included
bacon
smoked salmon with dill creme fraiche
mini roasted new potatoes
quiche (asparagus and ham)
chocolate and blueberry muffins
walnut coffee cake with a strudel topping
fruit salad with squirty cream
baguette with topping options of butter, 2 jams, nutella and peanut butter
coffee
tea
hot chocolate
orange juice
mimosas

and I almost added more, as I thought I should maybe do a baked french toast casserole dish

Brunch is about excessive food with savory and sweet options and served over a long time with multiple goings back for a bit more

but I do live in the land that popularized brunch 🤣

cariadlet · 20/08/2023 14:38

I always thought that brunch was when you got up late and there's no point having breakfast because you wouldn't be hungry by the time lunch came round so instead you have a substantial meal that's a bit breakfasty but will last you until dinner in the evening.

So anywhere between about 10 and 11.30

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/08/2023 14:40

Dancesaideveryone · 20/08/2023 13:25

So we had sourdough and humous. Nothing else but it was something.

Lesson learnt, have something before Smile

That's a snack! Not even a light lunch .

If I go out for breakfast it's normally around 11.00 and I tend to have something small at home first (banana, yogurt type or thing)

Crinkle77 · 20/08/2023 14:40

What the hell? Who was hosting?
