If you could run any kind of shop/cafe, what would you choose?

A quirky little shop unit is up for rental in a nearby street. It’s been a sort of general store for decades, although with a lot of local competition I’m not sure how it continued. Anyway, they’re retiring and I’m daydreaming of playing shops 😂Practicality aside, what would you choose if you had completely free rein?

My fantasy is a lovely little bookshop with lots of comfy sofas and a coffee-and-cake cafe.

And it would host book groups and open mic nights and whatnot and serve wine in the evening.

Sewing! Or bookshop.

Or fabric and books maybe...

BelovedLucy · 19/08/2023 19:36

Stationery, handmade paper etc.

I’d have a shop cum cafe that sold books, with a focus on craft books, plus selling yarn, patterns, needles and hooks, and other craft stuff, so you could buy books, then buy the supplies to start a new project, and head to the cafe to get started, over coffee and cake.

I’d host a book group and a knitting group.

I would love to sell all sorts of gorgeous journals/notebooks, pens, pencils, adult colouring books, candles...

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 19/08/2023 19:45

A cat cafe.

ConsuelaHammock · 19/08/2023 19:49

Yarn, books and houseplants.

RiverLen · 19/08/2023 19:51

Bookshop was my first thought, but love the idea of combining it with a craft store.

Hardware/ironmongers. Sink plugs, wheelbarrows, galvanised buckets etc and of course fork handles!

I’m very torn between soap and stationery tbh

But also very susceptible to suggestion, so now pondering gleaming towers of galvanised buckets.

In my head I'd love to open a fancy bakery with gorgeous interiors, serving amazing baked goods. There's just one problem.... I actually can't bake!

Sexnotgender · 19/08/2023 20:24

A little bakery/bookshop with stationery. Expensive stationery.

AHelpfulHand · 19/08/2023 20:25

A barefoot shoe shop selling all sorts of barefoot shoe brands

There’s a wine and cheese shop near me where you can either purchase to take home, or they’ll slice your cheese purchases for you and make into a little cheese board to eat with your wine. They have loads of olives, cured meats etc too.
In the winter, they make cheese toasties with lovely sourdough and housemade pickles.

They have live jazz at weekends, and a monthly book club.

They stay open pretty late on summer evenings.

It’s a really buzzy, vibrant place, and seems to attract a very eclectic mix of people.

I could completely see myself curating cheese supplies.

an all year round Christmas shop that is also a cafe selling afternoon teas and baked goods and pastries!

rainbug · 19/08/2023 20:27

A second hand bookshop with a cafe/bar space.

Oblomov23 · 19/08/2023 20:27

None/few of them make enough to survive.

Hippyhippybake · 19/08/2023 20:28

A clothes shop for pear shaped women.

Exactly this! I’ve always imagined running this exact shop/cafe

Model train shop with a cafe in it, with little trains puffing around like an indoor model village vibe. Plus an airfix section.

TheInfusionist · 19/08/2023 20:31

A launderette where you could take your washing in and have coffee/beer/wine while you wait for your beautifully folded bag of laundry to be returned to you

Marblessolveeverything · 19/08/2023 20:32

Cafe with books, which transforms into wine bar with nibbles in evening. Same premises two businesses maximising profit. My self and sister always said we would do this on winning the lottery 😜

caerdydd12 · 19/08/2023 20:33

I'd run a quiet cafe, no talking to the barista, you enter your order on a screen and the barista just makes it. No phone calls, no conversations. Basically the equivalent to a library, but with coffee and cake. Would be nice for people who need some peace and quiet, a shut off for technology, those with ASD or other ND traits that require somewhere to shut off for a bit, or just for anybody who needs somewhere to relax.

Stomacharmeleon · 19/08/2023 20:33

Fripperies :)
And I of course would be a lottery winner so wouldn't care what I sold or to whom. I would have my nose firmly planted in a dusty book and be the eccentric owner in the corner...
Not that I have thought about it a lot :)

Catsfrontbum · 19/08/2023 20:40

Bakery in the day time and Micro brewery with pizza Oberon in the night time.
