Feeling so embarrassed after anaesthesia. Please tell me this has happened to others?

A week ago, I had a surgery. I was extremely nervous before being put to sleep.

When I came round, I was in a lot of pain but my throat was so dry I couldn’t say “hey, I’m in pain” , so I just started whining “ouch “ “ouch “.

Then I kept taking off the oxygen mask because it was annoying me. I also asked multiple times where my car was and had to be reminded I was in hospital at least twice. I also kept waving to thin air. The nurse was nice enough but I could tell I wasn’t her favourite patient 😳.

Now I remember it, I’m so embarrassed and feel like I was probably a real pain in the arse. Coincidentally, I had to be kept in post op because I was groggier and woozier than expected.

Reassure me please!

I’ve worked as a recovery nurse. What you describe is nothing out of the ordinary. I’ve dealt with far more extreme behaviour.

On two separate occasions, I cried whilst telling them I was SO sorry for oversleeping and missing my slot - and pleading for them to still fit me in to their schedule.

One time, had gone private due to work cover. Was taken back to my room and had the use of a phone on my bedside cabinet. It had super-helpful large buttons so I could see the numbers. My sibling said it was the funniest call she’d ever received.

Another time, in the recovery room, I was vaguely aware of a male saying something along the lines of “blah blah blah … I’m Brad Pitt”. Apparently, I snorted derisively and called out “yeah, and I’m Kate Moss”.

I was in a lot of pain even after getting the max dosage of morphine. It was at that point I tried convincing the nurses to let me have a hit of their thc vapes I was sure they had. "If you won't tell I won't tell."

Thankfully they took it in good humour.

RantyAnty · 20/08/2023 05:17

They've heard and seen it all.

My late DH after surgery, kept insisting there were cats in his room and would ask for the litter box to be changed.

I was told that when I woke up from surgery I kept giggling and whispering to someone that wasn't there.

Everyone reacts differently to the anaesthesia - a man next to me once was thrashing about - scared the heck out of me - I sang once all the way back to the ward🙈
so don’t give it another thought 😘
as for that nurse and the ‘look’ you got - they should know better (as surely they shouldn’t be making anyone feel bad about the way they react to the anaesthetic)!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 20/08/2023 08:09

Insisting I couldn’t breathe - which clearly I could and actually arguing with the nurse that I really couldn’t breathe at all.

Righttherights · 20/08/2023 08:37

My DS thought he’d been abducted and it took 4 people to hold him down. The nurse said there were some choice words coming out of him. He vaguely recalls telling them to get the #%€$ off him . I was mortified that my little angel knew such words at his age.

Darlingx · 20/08/2023 08:46

What goes on tour stays on stays on tour 🫣I thought u soiled yourself . Nurses have seen it all . My last op I was instructed and congratulated to fill the toilet bowel and got a gold star every time I did bless the lovely nurse for making it less awkward her measuring my urine volumes .

Hotfeetcoldfeet · 20/08/2023 09:22

Some of these are hilarious! I usually sob quietly and sadly to myself after sedation. When I had an epidural I was panicking and repeatedly asked the nurse if I was paralysed, wiggling my toes all the time, as I was so worried about it!

Heyhoitsme · 20/08/2023 10:50

It's normal. I dread to think what I was saying but I was throwing the blankets off me. I could also hear a man talking absolute nonsense.

user1471481356 · 20/08/2023 11:30

Well I’m disappointed. I’m a nurse and I have never once seen any one say or do anything interesting after an anesthetic! I’ve had around 15 generals myself and always just wake up drowsy but calmly.

GingerBeerDrinker · 20/08/2023 11:41

Mine are really boring, especially after some of the other stories here.
I actually don't remember my first recovery. I was 21 and had my gallbladder out. I just remember being very in and out of "sleep"
I think the surgery was around lunch time. I was aware a little bit overnight, I remember a commode being wheeled in but I don't remember using it. I didn't really wake up until morning.

Then I was sterilised a couple of years ago, nothing much happened except being aware of a sore throat before anything else, being groggy, whining/moaning in pain and being given some oramorph.
And pretty similar when I had my hysterectomy earlier this year but without such a sore throat. Very groggy. I'd half expected an epidural as well as the general so was hoping for not much pain, so a lot of moaning in pain, being given fentanyl for the pain and then still being in pain on the way to the ward, where it was got under control fairly soon

Lliria · 20/08/2023 11:52

After I came round round after a boob job I was telling the recovery nurse I used decleor on my face and once in my room I kept saying I could hear the Surgeon laughing in the next room 😬😆

KimberleyClark · 20/08/2023 12:23

I’ve had three generals, two as a child, and been sedated several times but don’t appear to have done anything noteworthy at all!

x2boys · 20/08/2023 12:46

When my son was in critical care he was very confused for the first 24-48 hours he started mumbling about logarithm, s and the staff asked me if he like,s maths which he doesn't ,he also, thought he was in Spain ,he's nevrer been

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 20/08/2023 13:01

Oh op, you're in the bottom league. I shit myself and grabbed a nurse by her collar and screamed 'help me!' Whilst high on gas and air. 😩

LauraBells · 20/08/2023 13:22

I had surgery last week and it’s making me very sore laughing at all these.

When I came round, they wheeled me from theatre to the ward, via the ground floor where we went past a busy cafe in the hospital. I shouted out to everyone in the cafe that I was the Queen and gave them a royal wave. From my bed. I remember some people waved back. Blush

ChipshopPickledEgg · 20/08/2023 14:01

@WedRine
Ok I have really hurt my back and your post made me do a big laugh . . Ouch but what a funny post.

Pushkinia · 20/08/2023 14:10

I had sedation for eye surgery and came round panic stricken that I couldn’t see (I had a pressure bandage on one eye and antibiotic ointment in the other). I couldn’t figure it out and accused the nurse of stealing my eyes!

I then wet myself. Turns out that midazolam doesn’t agree with me. The nurses were lovely but I was so embarrassed!

Todayisanewday75 · 20/08/2023 14:42

Anaesthesia does weird things to people. Three days after an operation I was waiting on DP hand and foot and he snapped “at least in hospital they offered me a cup of tea” - he doesn’t even like tea!

Mmhmmn · 20/08/2023 15:10

I have no idea what I've done coming out of anaesthesia. I never remember.

But they've seen it all. I really wouldn't waste any more energy worrying about it.

Mmhmmn · 20/08/2023 15:11

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 18/08/2023 17:28

One of my friends was loudly very irritated with the nurses when he came round from an anaesthetic, because he had wanted his dog to do the operation apparently 😁

Don't worry OP it happens to everyone! And those who think it doesn't, just don't remember!

😂🤣🤣

Feeling the after effects of anaesthesia and morphine following my hysterectomy, my surgeon showed me photographs of the huge fibroid she’d removed. I said ‘ooh it’s not very pretty is it?!’ She agreed it wasn’t. Don’t worry OP, I’m sure they’ve heard it all.

PollyCreo · 20/08/2023 18:10

I had surgery three weeks ago, I was wheeled down to theatre and saw my surgeon sitting there waiting for me, he was cold due to the air conditioning being on full blast and had a blanket over him. I turned my head to him and asked him if he was cold, he said yes and put the blanket over me. I replied I was so cold it was making my nipples hard but for the last time (I was having a double mastectomy), he cracked up laughing. He also told me to remember my dreams coming out of the anaesthetic....

I came round and could clearly see a fire in the theatre, no one else could see it (it was apocalyptic). I was screaming and shouting trying to warn everyone to leave, the funniest thing was I was shouting in Greek 😂
