Feeling so embarrassed after anaesthesia. Please tell me this has happened to others?

A week ago, I had a surgery. I was extremely nervous before being put to sleep.

When I came round, I was in a lot of pain but my throat was so dry I couldn’t say “hey, I’m in pain” , so I just started whining “ouch “ “ouch “.

Then I kept taking off the oxygen mask because it was annoying me. I also asked multiple times where my car was and had to be reminded I was in hospital at least twice. I also kept waving to thin air. The nurse was nice enough but I could tell I wasn’t her favourite patient 😳.

Now I remember it, I’m so embarrassed and feel like I was probably a real pain in the arse. Coincidentally, I had to be kept in post op because I was groggier and woozier than expected.

Reassure me please!

I had a gynae procedure under general when I was 20 and pre children, I woke up panicking about whether I was wearing knickers and repeatedly demanding that they put my knickers back on. Now in my 40s, many gynae appointments and two births later, I doubt I'd care these days Grin

I once came round from an anesthetic, looked around the room, and announced that it was the shittest spa I'd ever been to.

DuckyDaffodil · 19/08/2023 00:19

I sing the deranged made up song I sing to our bunny at the top of my voice. Twice now. Cringe.

longtompot · 19/08/2023 00:21

I mainly wake up crying after a ga, but have since worked out it's because I am flat on my back and I can't do that as it hurts, so now I ask before hand to be rolled onto my side.
The last procedure though, I asked the nurse who was sat with me how much longer before I went in and she said it had all been done and I was in recovery. I was like, oh ok and I think I went back to sleep as I next remember waking up on the ward and the nurse saying she had changed my pad! I had zero knowledge of this happening at all.

Laserbeam24 · 19/08/2023 00:48

This is normal. I had dental surgery, came back around and immediately asked the nurse where my lucozade was.

Some people have acute delirium after anaesthetic, can last a couple of days. Might make them behave in ways they wouldn't normally, or be violent. They're mortified when they come out of it.

CoachBeardsJane · 19/08/2023 00:49

I started my period on the operating table and woke up on a puppy pad.. all the people who operated on me knew me because I'd been working with them for 5 years.

I think I win !

knowsmorethansnow · 19/08/2023 00:50

I was convinced the nurse was Gok Won without his glasses. I was then very upset because he must have left his glasses inside of me. I called the poor nurse Gok over and over and even shouted for him when he went to someone else.

Nat6999 · 19/08/2023 01:25

Late dp said he heard me shouting for him from the other end of the corridor both times he stayed with me when I had operations. I'm not drowsy after anaesthetic, I'm hyper, apparently I tried to persuade him I needed a shag after my hysterectomy.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 19/08/2023 01:28

My friend came to pick me up and take me home after a sedation. I kind of remember it and it all being fine, she dropped me off and I settled down on the sofa for a snooze. Next time I saw her I thanked her and told her about how I was fine and had a sleep. She just chuckled and said "You don't remember what you said do you?" No idea. I asked her about it again a few weeks later and she just laughed again. Still no idea 5 years later!

4catsaremylife · 19/08/2023 01:54

My liver resection -Firstly I upset the anaesthetist because apparently "I refused to breathe properly!" And then kept violently vomiting and opened up the operation site. The most embarrassing thing was I had only recently stopped working there 🤢 the staff were really glad when I left HDU for the ward poor things🤣

tt9 · 19/08/2023 02:24

having done a good few thousand Anaesthetics by now... I can tell you what you did does not even register on the scale!

and I have also had several Anaesthetics myselt remember once kept taking my make off and the nurses and consultant (who was my supervisor to top it all off) telling me off lol. I also said some pretty weird stuff as I was drifting off to sleep. Awkward!

MidnightMeltdown · 19/08/2023 02:29

Interesting how different people's experiences are. I woke up feeling really good, like I'd had a nice, restful sleep, even though I'd only been under for a short time.

I actually didn't want to wake up. I tried to turn over and go back to sleep in the operating theatre while the nurse was trying to remove the breathing tube!

MintyCedric · 19/08/2023 02:32

Had an appendectomy 9 years ago.

There was a glitch with the way they administered the anaesthesia and muscle relaxant which meant I was aware of being unable to feel myself breathing as I went idea and was waving my arms about shouting that I couldn’t breathe.

Basically came round in the same state of terror and wet the bed.

Not great obviously but it is what it is. I’m sure they deal with worse.

I love this thread, especially the demands for a bonny fanny, proper drugs from dodgy people and MARMITE TOAST!!!

gigipom · 19/08/2023 03:14

Oh my god op - one day I think you’ll look back at this and laugh.

I uncontrollably SOB when I wake up. And shake. And I can never get my words out. Don’t worry!

Not a GA, but conscious sedation while in a dentist chair.

Kept reaching around me to turn off the alarm clock as I just wanted to sleep.

Spoiler… the ‘alarm clock’ was the machine monitoring my sats/heart rate etc. A nurse had to stay with me because I kept doing it and nearly falling off the chair.

Sedation made me a bit cuckoo - no problems with the first but the second time I started shouting and trying to get up and leave (Have no memory of this). My partner could hear me yelling from the waiting room. Not what other the dental patients wanted to hear I'm sure!

littleripper · 19/08/2023 05:52

My son punched the dr in the nose then jumped up and ran for the door in his gown, bare bum mooning as he raced drunkenly down the corridors. I have chase. He was 7. It's normal 😂

sashh · 19/08/2023 07:31

@dontgobaconmyheart Ehlors Danos is crap, I know you know that but I just wanted to offer sympathy.

I have a friend who is a real needle phobic, I've been with her when she has given blood and the staff don't believe her.

Until she faints, her BP drops and she needs space blankets to warm her up.

It's because lots of people say they have a phobia when they don't.

Back to anesthetics, I went with a friend who had sedation at the dentists. After the procedure he had to lie down for a while in another room, he kept trying to get me to help him get off the bed, "Come on, ita'll be a laugh".

On the drive hoim I needed to cal in to a shop, he wouldn't stay in the car and while I was getting whatever it was he decided the aisle was the best place to practice ballet.

Paq · 19/08/2023 07:38

DH was reading a particularly exciting detective/murder novel waiting for his op. When he came round he spent about an hour convinced the poor nurse was in cahoots with the serial killer and wouldn't let her near her.

I read Jane Austen before mine just in case the same happened to me...!

Sartre · 19/08/2023 07:49

Had it twice following missed miscarriages. First one I’d haemorrhaged and collapsed before surgery so I was no doubt out of it due to that too but I kept laughing uncontrollably, putting the sick bowl on my head, talking absolute bollocks. Second one I couldn’t stop crying, it was completely out of my control.

Natsku · 19/08/2023 08:17

The first time I had a GA, I woke up and cried so hysterically they had to sedate me again!

QOD · 19/08/2023 08:40

These are brilliant 😂
ive had a grand total of 17 G A or sedations and vomited profusely, wet myself, cried, joked and laughed etc with all of them
fainted as I had an epidural, aspirated vomit after one op, perved and refused point blank to wake up once
i had a gastric bypass and was dreaming I was carving a beautiful crisp lamb joint. They had to keep me in recovery for an extra couple of hours as I was absolutely incapable of waking up as the dream was so delicious. Terrified the family

also have super low bp post op. Once the anaesthetist said to me in recovery (when I again wouldn’t wake up) “ok Mrs X. Any suggestions on how we can get you to stay awake? “
I said oh bring in that gorgeous Perry the porter, I’ll stay awake if I can perve on him’
obviously he was RIGHT THERE. He laughed, they laughed, I laughed and my BP shot back up 🤦🏼‍♀️

I had ivf for ds and had to be sedated for egg retrieval, legs in stirrups. Completely and utterly off my tits. I took my legs out of the stirrups and put them over the drs shoulders who was somewhere with her head in between my legs. No recollection until they told me after I came around, they said I would not keep my legs anywhere other than over her shoulders 😳🤣 and they had to hold my legs still.

The Ivf worked and when in labour with said egg lol. I had pethedine and made another total cunt of myself. I was in the birthing pool and was sick so the midwife was fishing sick out with a net and I was uncontrollably laughing at her with the fishing net. No idea why I thought it was so funny. She made me get out after that.

I have returned to this post three times since yesterday because it gives me such a belly laugh!! Ha ha haaaaa thanks for the Lolz @danni0509 !

Having looked after patients post op in recovery room I can say I have been, hugged, spat at, shouted at, told I’m loved, been groped and been told to fuck off. A memorable time was a guy coming round and I ended up wrestling with him on the floor with another nurse. He was in danger of injuring himself, it was decades ago.
