Feeling so embarrassed after anaesthesia. Please tell me this has happened to others?

A week ago, I had a surgery. I was extremely nervous before being put to sleep.

When I came round, I was in a lot of pain but my throat was so dry I couldn’t say “hey, I’m in pain” , so I just started whining “ouch “ “ouch “.

Then I kept taking off the oxygen mask because it was annoying me. I also asked multiple times where my car was and had to be reminded I was in hospital at least twice. I also kept waving to thin air. The nurse was nice enough but I could tell I wasn’t her favourite patient 😳.

Now I remember it, I’m so embarrassed and feel like I was probably a real pain in the arse. Coincidentally, I had to be kept in post op because I was groggier and woozier than expected.

Reassure me please!

I'm now wondering whether my reactions to waking up after GA are so awful that my brain forgets them! As all 4 times, I just recall waking up feeling foggy but completely normal?

I started my period on the operating table and woke up on a puppy pad.. all the people who operated on me knew me because I'd been working with them for 5 years.

I think I win !

Yep, I think you win 😃

After my General Anaesthetic many years ago after having all my wisdom teeth removed, I woke up and the first thing I asked for was a large glass of white wine 😩

MouseMinge · 19/08/2023 14:39

I love conscious sedation. I have it a lot because of an oesophagus problem (over twenty times in twenty years). If I wake up with oxygen things in my nose it's like waking from the best sleep ever. I'm always off my tits but am like a drunk trying to act sober. I just get giddy and LOVE everyone and everything.

Feelingsolost88 · 19/08/2023 14:45

OP, do not give it another moment's thought, honestly!! They will be well used to it and people react in all manner of odd ways in these situations.

Feelingsolost88 · 19/08/2023 14:45

These have given me a laugh though so thank you for this thread!!!

FerryPink · 19/08/2023 16:09

I know, I have loved this thread! I don't know how a thread gets into classics but this one should!

If I am ever worried about an op in future (and I have cause to be as I have Myasthenia) I would like to dig it out and have a chuckle Smile

Singlemum19802023 · 19/08/2023 17:44

I started asking for a gin and tonic and asking them what gins they had!!!! They must have thought I was an alchy but I’m sure I thought I was in a pub! 😂

I have worked in recovery for many years. All of the above I've dealt with. It's all normal! Very little surprises me now when patients are coming round from a GA

Royaly82 · 19/08/2023 17:47

After one GA I told everyone in the room I would come back the next day with champagne for them!

I've had loads of GA and have only talked nonsense on one occasion.

Ah girls. That is mild, first time in recovery I told my gynae surgeon that my friend fancied him and wanted to have his babies. She was seeing him the next day for a post op check. He spent the whole appointment with her talking about his wife… 🙈🙈🙈 Second time, I told my mum in recovery I loved her, she was right up there with the man at the top of the road I had been seeing for six months and no one knew. Third time apparently I sang Queens “Fat bottom girls” at the top of my voice and told the recovery team to strap on my wings because I was ready to fly…. I am due for surgery in November…. Bet they can’t wait to see me again… 🙈🙈🙈

livingwithboys · 19/08/2023 17:52

Totally normal!! It’s all the drugs you’re on. I had an op years ago when I was 20, post op I grabbed my now hubby and tried to kiss him right in front of my parents which he was very uncomfortable with! Also pulling up my hospital gown looking at the iodine marks on my upper leg, think I must have taken it up quite far as my mum covered me up quickly!🤣 (had hip surgery!) so nothing to worry about at all, I’m sure they’ve seen worse, just put it to the back of your mind now and focus on recovery 👍🏻

Claraw81 · 19/08/2023 17:52

As a theatre nurse let me reassure you this happens all the time, the staff looking after you will already have forgot about it and there is absolutely no need to be embarrassed.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 19/08/2023 18:01

My mum had a bad reaction to the anaesthesia when she had her hysterectomy and her heart rate/body temp dropped. She was kept in recovery for several hours. Once she started to come around though the nurse said she became very violent and aggressive. She didn't know the majority of what she said as the nurse told her it was too vile to repeat. The one thing they did tell her which was aparently the mildest thing she said was that 'Dr N has got hands like bastard shovels'.

Oh you're good, that’s nothing! One of mine, after surgery to put my leg back together again, I told the nurse to tell my surgeon I was going to kill him for what he did. Every time I went for a check-up he would say “I’m still alive!” Cringe 😵‍💫

Stigolini · 19/08/2023 18:07

I woke after dental surgery singing in German. I don't speak German...

LividHot · 19/08/2023 18:08

I once told a young anaesthetist he was very handsome.

Dragonfly97 · 19/08/2023 18:12

I was anxious about vomiting on coming round from the anaesthetic so I mentioned it to the anaesthetist beforehand, and they adjust it/add something to stop it. I've always been ok, apart from feeling groggy then tired for a couple of days.

runningpink · 19/08/2023 18:20

Thank you everyone! I haven’t laughed this much in a long time!
Iv reported the thread and asked if they can move to classics! 🤞🏻

bellabasset · 19/08/2023 18:24

I was 3 hours in surgery for a dental, apparently I wouldn't come round. When I went back to work a week later I was still so groggy I fell asleep at work, which amused everyone of my colleagues. My face was swollen and bruised. I remember my dh telling me the train from Manchester had been held up waiting for George Best and I think Man U were playing Chelsea that week.

AndStand · 19/08/2023 18:25

My friend worked in the same hospital where she had an op.
As she came round she was professing undying love to one of the anaesthetists, who she actually did really fancy. She was mortified when she came back to work.

Bonfire23 · 19/08/2023 18:35

I just ping awake and ask for food and when I can go home
Last time I asked when I could have a cup of tea and they sighed "you're still in recovery. And also definitely a redhead with that fast wake up"

ShergarAgain · 19/08/2023 18:36

I came round from gallbladder surgery and told the nurse that there was a bee 🐝 on my ear. It was in fact an oxygen sats monitor on my earlobe. I was very insistent. She showed it to me and I was briefly reassured. I nodded off for a bit then woke and started on about the 🐝 again. She sighed and changed it to a finger probe. Then I tried to inject myself with the oral morphine they gave me. I am a doctor, it was in a syringe, and I was far too bewildered to coordinate mouth and syringe so I decided on the cannula approach. The nurse whipped it off me and helped me take it 😂

Honestly, don’t give it another thought. The Recovery area of any hospital is an absolute hoot!

Pliudev · 19/08/2023 18:55

Auntieobem, I told the doctor they'd called in to do my stitches that I had a pg degree in embroidery so I was expecting him to do a good job.
