Feeling so embarrassed after anaesthesia. Please tell me this has happened to others?

A week ago, I had a surgery. I was extremely nervous before being put to sleep.

When I came round, I was in a lot of pain but my throat was so dry I couldn’t say “hey, I’m in pain” , so I just started whining “ouch “ “ouch “.

Then I kept taking off the oxygen mask because it was annoying me. I also asked multiple times where my car was and had to be reminded I was in hospital at least twice. I also kept waving to thin air. The nurse was nice enough but I could tell I wasn’t her favourite patient 😳.

Now I remember it, I’m so embarrassed and feel like I was probably a real pain in the arse. Coincidentally, I had to be kept in post op because I was groggier and woozier than expected.

Reassure me please!

You behaved beautifully compared to some of my own post-anaesthetic escapades. Don't give it another thought.

I had ivf for ds and had to be sedated for egg retrieval, legs in stirrups. Completely and utterly off my tits. I took my legs out of the stirrups and put them over the drs shoulders who was somewhere with her head in between my legs. No recollection until they told me after I came around, they said I would not keep my legs anywhere other than over her shoulders 😳🤣 and they had to hold my legs still.

The Ivf worked and when in labour with said egg lol. I had pethedine and made another total cunt of myself. I was in the birthing pool and was sick so the midwife was fishing sick out with a net and I was uncontrollably laughing at her with the fishing net. No idea why I thought it was so funny. She made me get out after that.

Capitulatingpanda · 18/08/2023 17:39

I wouldn't let the nurse take away my high flow oxygen, it was really nice and every time she tried I kept shouting that I couldn't breathe. I worked in the hospital too... embarrassing.

Shopper727 · 18/08/2023 17:39

I’m a Paeds nurse and for some children anaesthetic makes them hysterical/screaming etc uncontrollably it’s really horrible to see but others are just drowsy and a bit teary. They usually get plenty pain relief in theatre So when they come out they are comfy but of course you don’t know that until they are awake. My own son had some day surgery and was hysterical on waking he ended up with diihydrocodeine and a big sleep and extra 4 hours observation fun times

Auntieobem · 18/08/2023 17:41

Not quite the same, but after having dd2 and still high on gas and air I asked the midwife who was stitching me up to "make me bonny!" She said she'd do what she could..

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 17:42

I came round and gave a nurse a telling off doe waling me up as I was heaving a lovely sleep!

My mother came round and was confused, perhaps thinking she had died and was in a meeting room before going to heaven and started singing hymns!

If you go on YouTube there are lots of videos where people have come round after dental surgery and they say the strangest things!

Babadook76 · 18/08/2023 17:42

Bloody hell op, I was expecting far worse than that. I’ve watched compilation videos of people reacting to the gas American dentists give you. I’ve seen one woman ask the dentist when it was safe for her to smoke a bong again, a teenage girl asking the nurse in front of her mum when she could suck her boyfriends dick again. And a woman who kept saying the surgeon looked like her ex who was the man she should have married, her actual husband was sat next to her. No one would bat an eyelid at you asking about your car 😂

froggyfringe · 18/08/2023 17:46

It's very common, I thought you were going to say something far more outrageous.

Chenford · 18/08/2023 17:47

Not a GA, but conscious sedation while in a dentist chair.

Kept reaching around me to turn off the alarm clock as I just wanted to sleep.

Spoiler… the ‘alarm clock’ was the machine monitoring my sats/heart rate etc. A nurse had to stay with me because I kept doing it and nearly falling off the chair.

mummymeister · 18/08/2023 17:47

I swear really really badly after any sort of anasthetics. I always warn people first and apologise in advance. No idea where it comes from but its every single time.

Prelapsarianhag · 18/08/2023 17:48

Gas and air - I called the consultant a stupid cunt.

ActDottie · 18/08/2023 17:48

I think this is pretty standard :) dont worry OP

Icantsleepagain · 18/08/2023 17:49

I went through my entire family, telling the nurse who was an arsehole and who wasn't and why. I also kept pulling at my tubes. I must have pulled the oxygen tube going to under my nose out and two nurses were trying to get it back where it should have been. I remember being restrained too. I also say I'm going to fly off. Another time I was wailing and crying. Fun 🙄

ThreeLittleDots · 18/08/2023 17:49

My friend punched the nurse, ran off, locked herself in the bathroom and passed out again!

donkra · 18/08/2023 17:49

I've only had GA once as a teen, but I woke up crying hysterically and vomiting. I have no idea why.

It's very normal. Your brain is coming back from being fully, artificially offline and it tends to cycle through some weeeeeird legacy programmes before it catches up with reality. Don't worry OP.

Gilead · 18/08/2023 17:50

Tried to climb out of a fifth floor window telling them I’d come back tomorrow when all this nonsense was over and done with.
When I was compos mentis I discovered heavy bruising over the tops of my arms. Apparently they’d used the bars either side of the bed to pin me down!

Davidsdaughter · 18/08/2023 17:30

yes, and I work in a MAT school, so I texted the CEO, the head the deputy heads, my head of faculty and my head of department.

I had myself a little text fest.......

and then I had a lot of explaining to do.......

And I also robbed Sainsbury's on the way home.... luckily they were very understanding

So when you are told don't go home unaccompanied, this is why!

Did you post on here about robbing Sainsbury’s? I remember a thread from someone who accidentally shoplifted on the way home after anaesthesia and she was still off her head when posting, it was very funny 😁

UntidyFairy · 18/08/2023 17:52

I came round from a GA continually asking for a cigarette. They kept telling me I'd have to wait.

I don't smoke.

mangochops · 18/08/2023 17:52

I had my tonsils out as an adult and was in agony- so was on very strong pain meds. When they wheeled me back into my room after the GA, the tv was on and the news had just announced that Heath Ledger had died. I rang the bell for the nurse at least 5 times to inform them of his death and was rambling about how we should arrange a memorial. Dont worry OP!

Clarabe1 · 18/08/2023 17:53

I told the nurse to get the washing in and then promptly puked up. I think they have heard it all!

SantiagoSky · 18/08/2023 17:54

I insisted they had to take the covers away so I could see the operation on my hand. I can normally not even watch getting a flu jab..

questionersquestion · 18/08/2023 17:54

I'm still mortified that I wet myself after surgery last year! I didn't even feel it, they just lifted me up, removed my gown and the sheets and replaced them. I kept apologising and still feel so embarrassed.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 18/08/2023 17:55

My DH didn't get to the hospital in time before I went for emergency surgery, so as they put me to sleep I was wondering "where's DH?"
Clearly I was thinking the same as I woke up, so I grabbed the hand of the person who was sitting behind my head, tapping my cheek, and kissed it over and over again, wailing "DH, DH, where were you?"

"Ahem, Mrs WhereDoes, I'm Doctor Smith, your anaesthetist"

dahliadazed · 18/08/2023 17:56

DD was sedated to have a sigmoidoscopy. DD gave a running commentary on everything she could see on the screen and was telling the staff how disgusting it all was. The dr moved the screen so DD couldn’t see anymore and the Norse gave DD her phone and said ‘here, this will keep you quiet’. DD then sent me selfies. She was mortified when she remembered 😂.

Mama_bear · 18/08/2023 17:56

I became very agressive and tried to attack a nurse. I was mortified. Apparently it happens a lot.
