Which inanimate objects do you always battle with?

I almost always have a fight with hotel showers. I feel like I'm on The Crystal Maze with most of them, trying to turn them on. It's always pull this knob while turning this dial and pressing the button to your left simultaneously. I just returned from a lovely BnB which had a shower only, no bath and all you had to do was press a button. It was great.

Hoover cords are another nemesis of mine. It doesn't matter what I do, they always end up tangled and kinked. I really need to get another cordless vacuum.

What inanimate objects are your nemesis?

Coat hangers 😡

mrsfeatherbottom · 18/08/2023 13:46

Tin openers!

Amdone123 · 18/08/2023 13:47

The remote control (s).
I long for days gone by when you just had one ( or none !).
Every single morning, I argue with them 🤣

Hereforthedramaz · 18/08/2023 13:47

Door locks, I seem to break more than is reasonable!

ALongHardWinter · 18/08/2023 14:13

Umbrellas. It's either getting jammed when I try to put it down,so I have to get on the bus with it still up and feel like a right fool. Or they're blowing inside out in the wind,or the spokes are catching on something. As my late Ddad said, they are 'the invention of the devil'.

squashyhat · 18/08/2023 14:19

Those stupid push-down-and-twist or push-down-and-squeeze caps on medicine and bleach bottles. I have just fought with one on a bottle of drain unblocker. I have arthritis in my hands and can barely push down or twist/squeeze - never mind both at the same time.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 18/08/2023 14:21

Oh I hate those bottles. I now decant them into other bottles ( which I label clearly, even though it is only me using them) to keep my sanitary and my temper intact.

i often have trouble with corkscrews, which is really unfortunate.

theemmadilemma · 18/08/2023 14:21

This. Maybe it's my small stature, but the only way I can put the damn thing down is to sort of stick my head under the first layer, and use it to keep it held up as I raise the two handles and then lower the whole thing while removing my head. 😂

Door handles and sleeves

poppym12 · 18/08/2023 14:28

Cling film. Bloody evil stuff.

Knittedfairies · 18/08/2023 14:35

Oven shelves. We had a new cooker early this year and I cannot fathom how to change their position easily.

Mummy08m · 18/08/2023 14:37

I cannot collapse an ironing board without hurting myself.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 18/08/2023 14:39

Our rotary airer in the garden. It’s such a c*. Every time I need to put it up open it has a fight with me. It won’t lock into place 😡 I really should get a new one, but there’s more pressing issues. It’s fine once —dh has done it for me— up.

Door handles and sleeves

Not just sleeves. Pockets, and many other parts of my clothing get caught on the bloody things, often making me spill whatever I am carrying.

Those new bottles where the cap is attached to the bottle to encourage you to make sure the cap go in the restyling. They can fuck off and the horse they rode in on

GoodLordHelpMe · 18/08/2023 15:59

@theemmadilemma I do a foot dance with mine to get it to lower. Most of the time now I just leave it up as it's such a pain!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 18/08/2023 16:10

@squashyhat and others who mentioned it, there are tools to help with this! Link below but lots of places sell similar.

My Inanimate Object Twat is USB chargers. There are only two possible chances/ways to plug it in, one must be correct. WHY does it take three goes to get it in?! How. Truly they are twats.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 18/08/2023 16:12

Jam jars! Or any jar. I just can't open them for the first time. I do the hot water, the cloth, the elastic band, the knife tip...literally everything. Someone always has to open them for me.

And, I do have grip strength.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 18/08/2023 16:19

@OneMoreCookieMonster they also have aids for that on the above site (and lots of other sites, of course)

You are also VAT exempt if you have a disability.

I agree, those child safe caps are bloody awful.

I tried to open a new mouthwash this morning where you squeeze the sides together and turn.

Took me ages to do.

You need a jar key. It’s not a grip thing. It’s a gadget which releases the pressure from the lid and they then open straight away!

Mine is pencils and pencil sharpeners. I cannot find one with a container which sharpens and doesn’t break pencils, so it’s a constant battle with them.

Sandysandwich · 18/08/2023 16:38

Door handles and edges of bannisters always catch my sleeves, pockets, bagstraps and beltloops.

Hedjwitch · 18/08/2023 16:42

Curtains and all associated paraphernalia of rails, tracks, hooks, rings etc. Bastard things
