Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

They could maybe compromise and she could appear via video link from her prison

She didn't appear for the verdict. What a cowardly, psychotic, cunt. I hope they force her to appear for sentencing.

She can't be forced to appear for sentencing, that's not how it works

Mooshamoo · 18/08/2023 15:59

It's hard to know. Some of the deaths do look like institutional failings

FrogTaped · 18/08/2023 16:00

I found Dr Stephen Brearey's interview very moving. He comes across with such genuine empathy, he gives a huge amount of information professionally and factually. It seems clear he knew exactly what was happening with suspicions early on, but wasn't listened to.

Stream the sentencing into the room they're holed up in. Film them and stream that back into into court live.

AND slap an extra 5 years on the sentence for those refusing to attend. Even for life sentences. It might deter those expecting shorter sentences to show up.

Flapjacker48 · 18/08/2023 16:02

The managers in that hospital who just wanted this to go away should hang their heads in shame, be investigated and sacked.

@GameOverBoys In the year preceding LL starting her killing spree, there were 3 deaths in the entire year, which was high for the unit. And LL was already working there, therefore it is not impossible she had a hand in those also. The year she was killing, there were 7 unexpected deaths and 10 unexpected near death incidents. Following her arrest, there was 1 in 7 years.

There were a tiny number of deaths only that aren't covered by that graphic.

To put it in context, hospitals with a huge NICU, what is known as a Level 3 unit, receive extremely ill babies who will need expert NICU support from all across their given area of the UK usually have around 25 - 30 beds. In comparison, the unit where LL worked had 12 beds, and was a Level 1 unit, caring for babies who needed a manageable amount of extra support. The number of deaths at LL's small unit during that period are equivalent to or higher than the biggest units for the sickest babies in the country.

The other thing which made these deaths even more suspicious, is that all the babies which died were in a stable condition. And, none of them could be resuscitated. So the way they died, and why they even died was all unusual.

wayyour · 18/08/2023 16:02

The unnecessary administering of insulin was pretty damning though in one of the cases.

mummymeister · 18/08/2023 16:05

I have listened to most of the BBC radio coverage special report. the really shocking thing is that whistleblowers were ignored and even asked to send her a letter of apology signed by all them so that she was then reinstated after suspension. The whole cover up culture in the NHS is absolutely shocking. those poor doctors who blew the whistle now have to live with knowing that some babies died needlessly because no one listened to them .

CinderRosie · 18/08/2023 16:06

If she refuses to attend court I think this will impact on her 'privileges' in prison.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 18/08/2023 16:06

I wonder what happened to the beds that were subsequently removed?

YoSof · 18/08/2023 16:09

I can’t imagine being on shift, giving each other a “look” and asking if Lucy was on shift again when an alarm sounded. That it became normal to ask that.

I know there is nobody else to blame but her, she did this, but I can’t help but wonder why didn’t another nurse shadow her if there were suspicions?

ilovebrie8 · 18/08/2023 16:09

It’s beyond despicable! If ever there was a case for capital punishment this so it….vulnerable tiny babies . She’s sick. Saw an interview with a mother Letby didn’t manage to kill her baby and was so angry with the parents she knew exactly what she was doing and was angry she didn’t manage to kill their little one 😮she is subhuman …hospital also at fault too.

PickledMuffin · 18/08/2023 16:12

Is there a date when she will be sentenced yet?

But if this is true, he should have gone to the police years before. How could he have worked with her another day?

Belladonna56 · 18/08/2023 16:14

Those poor families. I can't even begin to imagine how it feels knowing that your precious baby was murdered.

Luciansmum6 · 18/08/2023 14:48

@Lifecanbebeautiful12 did you follow the podcast? They detailed absolutely all the evidence. It was all completely circumstantial.

don’t get me wrong I think she did probably do it but as I said- listen properly to the actual court stuff and not the media and mumsnet stuff. It was sketchy at best

Circumstantial evidence is perfectly valid evidence. It does my head in that some people don’t seem to understand this.

Prescottdanni123 · 18/08/2023 16:15

She should NEVER be released. She is too dangerous.

How??

It won't

Maggiethecat · 18/08/2023 16:17

Interview with one consultant. Imagine being told that a line had been drawn under the matter, a line that could not be crossed??

I do feel for the bereaved parents who have had to endure learning of the failures of management and at the same time I imagine how eternally relieved are those parents whose babies were patients at the time and may have escaped LL because these doctors stood up.

That reminds me of something I read about the Shipman case. Apparently, the local undertakers saw so many ‘clients’ coming their way after his ministrations that they used to joke about him ‘bumping them off’.

She must never be released evil. I wonder what her parents think did they ever see anything ….she’s a serial killer …hopefully prisoners sort her out child killers don’t fare well

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/08/2023 16:22

Shocking how the whistleblowing took so long and that no one was believing at the time the doctors and other medical staff

Sadly I don't find this surprising at all, given the institutional drive towards cover-ups and turning of blind eyes. Time after time we learn that professional concern has been brushed aside, and when the eventual outcome involves the parroting of "lessons will be learned" and little else we can be pretty certain that they won't be

And so devastated families continue to suffer ...

Having followed the case on the threads I'm not confident in this judgement.

Well those that heard all the evidence in court are.

Which is what matters.
