Scammed on Facebook. Need help

I'm clearly a dumbass. I've been scammed out of £140 on Facebook marketplace. Which may not seem much to some but this is a huge amount for me. What can I do? She is refusing to refund me. I don't know what steps I can take 😭 any advice? Besides telling me I'm stupid. I already know I am. So frustrating!

What payment method did you use?

How did the scam happen did she sell you something and you paid before picking up and you didn't get the item or you collected item, saw it then paid after deciding you wanted the item

Have you spoken to the police? They may have info on the scammer.

I would threaten with police (and then follow through if necessary).

RoseBucket · 18/08/2023 12:23

You can report to Action Fraud who in all honesty will do nothing. What was it you was buying?

userxx · 18/08/2023 12:23

When did this happen ?

anotheranotheranotheranother · 18/08/2023 12:23

What is the scam?

She was going to deliver something, she wanted full price before she set off because she was 40 mins away, I refused because I didn't want to get scammed (irony) so I sent half and said I'd give her the last half when it was in front of me. But alas, she never showed up, neither did the item and she's send me threatening messages saying that she's now 'posted it' yet won't send any tracking reference. Which is weird considering it's a phone. I asked for confirmation via the tracking and she said she's too busy but wants the remaining money. I then said if she sent me the tracking I'd happily pay however if I don't have tracking how do I know she's posted it and also what if it gets lost in the mail or something to which she said if it gets lost is more my fault then hers 🙈 it weird though because she sent me a photo of her drivers license which has all her info on it. So why be that transparent when scamming?

Thank you for being so sweet. I've spoken with the police and they just said they'll file it. Looks like I've completely lost the money

More context is needed. Is it an actual scam or have you just bought something you now don't want birthday is defective in some way?

Was it a private seller?

Im not sure there's anything you can do.
Perhaps contact the bank but not sure they'll be able to do much.

Not much you can do apart from name and shame on Facebook

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 12:30

Even if she sent you tracking it could be anything of an equivalent weight.

BacktoBeginnersFran · 18/08/2023 12:30

Because it's all a lie, and it's not her driving licence? It's shit, I'm sorry 😞 Don't send her another penny!

Whataretheodds · 18/08/2023 12:30

Take screen shots of everything including her profile.
Report to FB
Report to Action Fraud, even if it doesn't seem worth it.
Report it to your bank - they can flag the receiving account as fraudulent which means they can put extra checks in place when people try to send money to it.

dinoice · 18/08/2023 12:31

Can you do chargeback if it was a bank transfer?

@Whatintheworldgirl the drivers license may not be hers I'm just guessing as like you say if she was going to scam you why give you that much information about herself.

The only thing I think you can do is maybe call the bank and explain but even then I can imagine they may say well you willingly transferred the money so they can't do anything.

Try not to be hard on yourself I know you probably are being but it may well be a very expensive lesson learnt unfortunately

You're really kind. Thank you for talking to me nicely. I do feel like a complete idiot and highly emotional so I appreciate your calm approach
