Glamorous European women on hols

Yumchips · 17/08/2023 19:56

Bit of a silly topic but in Greece at the moment on hols and I am seeing so many glamorous European women. Some or them have small children, some older and many families who have a nanny or someone there to support them with the kids. They are so glam looking, must have had some work done but it's fairly subtle but they are very very slim. Even the ones with babies that are 2/3 months old. They are dripping in designer clothes. Interestingly enough, I think their husbands seem to be very hands off with the kids, especially around meal times. I am sort of in awe but also wondering how they seem to put together and composed. Any thoughts other than the obvious, which is money.

Actually, that could be a factor as well, @itsmyp4rty - people just bringing hand luggage.

ParisDispatches · 19/08/2023 17:01

I don't know..99.9% of the time I travel either carry on too. It just means being careful about what you buy & what you pack.

I think it boils down to what people feel is comfortable & acceptable in their worlds & despite the very many protesters on these threads it's v clear that in different places there are different styles. And people are noticeable when they travel.

ParisDispatches · 19/08/2023 17:01

Should say 'only' not either carry on

They might be healthier but the OP is talking about glamour.

There are so many of these threads about how 'wonderfully glamorous European women are', but they're very short sighted because it's usually more to do with the standard/price of holiday.

Go on expensive holidays in the UK and you'll also see more glamorous people too.

It's more to do with affluency and less to do with the country they come from.

A trip to various European poor areas tells a very different story, just as it does in the UK.

I think maybe going somewhere like a trendy influencers’ playground (eg Mykonos, Santorini or the Amalfi Coast atm) will also mean there’s a lot of camera-ready folk.

Side note: My husband is Parisian. As someone who loves fashion, I was v underwhelmed by the glamour/style of women my age when I first went but did see some stylish older women who were fabulous. Parisian chic seemed to be all about a capsule wardrobe, classic timeless cuts, mainly darks and neutrals, and an expensive scarf. I found the women I saw avoided trends and prints. Easy to replicate the basic wardrobe on a budget. Just accessorise with a Hermes! 😉😂 And invest in a really nicely tailored jacket. In black obvs.

It's just glamorous or chic women. They're available all over the world. As are their less glamorous counterparts.

It's not hard to be glamorous or chic You just have to want to be, and care about your appearance.

I do loads of carry-on breaks, it's very easy to keep it simple.

And I don't hate myself, I really like myself.

Not a fan of Hermès scarves. My sister wears and rocks them. I keep it very simple. No print at all. I don't wear jewellery. I have two swimsuits from Eres. I don't think bikinis are chic.

I'm off to Dubrovnik for five nights on Friday.

I will take

Navy maxi from Cos
White maxi from Cos
Striped cream maxi from Zeus and Dion
Cream silk mix shorts from Jospeh
Silk halterneck top from Zeus and Dion
White vest from Toteme
Navy cashmere vest from The Row
White and blue maxi skirt from MaxMara
Oversized White linen shirt from Raey
Two Eres swimsuits, one Navy, one electric blue.
Navy and cream kaftan from Tory Burch
Black Ginza sandals from The Row
Cream linen Birkenstocks
Hermès Oran in cream
Chloe tan sandals
Ancient Greek slides for by the pool
A short white and navy djellaba from Toast
A cream linen beach bag from Arket
A small basket bag from Isabel Marant
The Row Park tote that I'll use as my carry on handbag
Gucci large 80s style sunglasses
Victoria Beckham oversized black cats eye sunglasses
Rayban aviators.
Large black woven sunhat from Wolf and Badger.

Obviously knickers.

I don't wear bras.

That's it.

I personally think it's hard to be chic, very few people are.

frippu · 20/08/2023 09:25

And I don't think it's just about clothes, lots of people can buy the key pieces & be fashionable but chic is something else.

And with glamour, I don't think it's an outfit you can put on. Some people are just glamorous.

Galiana · 20/08/2023 09:30

@frippu as someone who's often told they're chic I don't find it hard. It's simplicity and shapes. I love clothes but I always seek the most clean and basic shape. I keep it so simple.

No print. No patterns. No jewellery. No adornments.

Super clean and basic. That's what I love.

frippu · 20/08/2023 09:39

@Galiana we probably just have different interpretations of the word chic. Too me it style & it's innate & you can wear something completely ordinary but still look chic. And as I said I think it's very rare.

Galiana · 20/08/2023 09:40

And @frippu I'm often told I'm glamorous.

Glamour is a strange one. What does it mean?

I think it means different things to different people.

I don't see myself as glamorous, I'm not shiny.

I am tall and thin. Maybe tall and thin and obviously caring about appearance becomes de facto glamour.

frippu · 20/08/2023 09:44

I think glamour has a sensuality, an excitement to it & for me it's often about wearing slightly impractical stuff but pulling it off. I also think jewellery & great hair helps.

I often get told I'm glamorous, I'm not at all. I do have good "glamorous" hair though.

Galiana · 20/08/2023 10:07

Ha! @frippu, I have great hair too!

Mine gets a lot of love.

It's not trad hair though, it's giant and silver and absolutely does its own thing.

I'm a big believer in the hair maketh the person.

Don't fight it!

frippu · 20/08/2023 10:14

I have hair like Gisele & don't have to do anything to it, which is very helpful as i'm very low maintenance.

Are you tall & slim? Whose style (in public eye) do you most admire? Do you sunbathe?

Peverellshire · 20/08/2023 12:20

Apologies, see you’ve answered already. In quiet awe…

I don't really look at other people's style. I don't admire anyones style, I do enjoy looking at women who look great, and happy with themselves. My style is absolutely mine and I'm very happy with it.

Sunbathe? No! Absolutely not. I'm quite pale but do pay attention to skin tone. I know that tanned or olive is always seen as the ideal, but I think it's regular and good tone that's really the kicker.

Agree, you sound awesome & imagine love the Arts too…

Charming!

Why is that 'charming'?

I agree with this totally. I've recently started making small changes when I'm replacing items or the rare occasion I'm buying new for new sake.

Clean lines and no fuss. Doesn't have to be boring as you can jazz things up with different textures and materials but all in a small number of colours.

I've noticed my jewellery and accessories like head scarves or bags stand out as they aren't competing with mad prints.

Clothes are starting to mix and match very a easily so it's quicker to get ready but know that when feel smart, professional and - dare I say it - heading towards "chic" territory.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/08/2023 12:52

Galiana your holiday items sound beautiful. If you were in my hotel you'd be my holiday girl crush Grin

I'm sure this poster looks great but I think style has a bit more individuality to it. The above is very much a tick box holiday wardrobe of key pieces that any "influencer" would chose. I can't afford ginza's or oran's but they & their copies are pretty ubiquitous so I wouldn't buy them if I could.
I'm not trying to put that poster down more just ranting how fashion has become so homogeneous. I do have an Eres swimsuit though, worth it to feel comfortable on the beach!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/08/2023 13:37

I have a feeling though that a paired down aesthetic and shopping like this leads to less clothing consumption as there is less need for more stuff as you don't find a pattern or cut has gone out of style or find you have a wardrobe full of stuff but nothing to wear as it doesn't mix and match

Re: 48% of Italians being overweight...I imagine a lot of them are middle age/a bit older ladies like my DM (whose BMI is 26) and carry it all on their hips. So not noticeably overweight really but 'technically' overweight.

I'm in Italy atm and most women my age seem to be wearing shorts and tshirts/cropped tshirts. I bought my UK summer dresses and it's too hot to wear most of them.

Nothingbuttheglory · 21/08/2023 15:54

Re: 48% of Italians being overweight.

63.8% of the UK is overweight or obese so yeah, Italians are still thinner than us.

Peverellshire · 21/08/2023 16:19

My mother is incredibly slim, elegant & conservative. She’s never done fun, flighty & ritzy. I think it’s a shame she’s never taken any fashion risks for fear of getting it ‘wrong’.
