Glamorous European women on hols

Yumchips · 17/08/2023 19:56

Bit of a silly topic but in Greece at the moment on hols and I am seeing so many glamorous European women. Some or them have small children, some older and many families who have a nanny or someone there to support them with the kids. They are so glam looking, must have had some work done but it's fairly subtle but they are very very slim. Even the ones with babies that are 2/3 months old. They are dripping in designer clothes. Interestingly enough, I think their husbands seem to be very hands off with the kids, especially around meal times. I am sort of in awe but also wondering how they seem to put together and composed. Any thoughts other than the obvious, which is money.

I agree but surely even that is better than the other end of the spectrum? As i have said i don't own make up and live in leggings and wellies at home but hell would freeze over before i went to the shop in leggings, wellies or nightwear.

Better in what way? It might /look/ better. Even that depends on what it is - certain types of 'OTT' look really quite disturbing to me - women with very heavy makeup, contoured, with fake nails like talons, and big puffy lips and big false eyelashes genuinely look disturbing to me. There's an uncanny valley aspect to it.

Better for the person? If a woman feels like she must put on make up to go to the shop to buy milk, that's a really unhealthy attitude towards her own face. Men don't do that. Why is she so self-conscious about her own (clean) face and why does she consider it unpresentable?

I do agree that it's weird and inappropriate to go into shops in obvious pyjamas/nightwear/dressing gown, etc, which don't look like you're dressed. But I think we can keep a distinction between normal clothes and sleeping clothes without requiring the 'normal clothes' to be of a 'dressed-up' nature. You can wear jeans and a t-shirt to go to the shop; you don't need to be in smarter trousers and a nice blouse.

Where does this statistics come from? As I said before, I live in Italy and half of the people I see each day are not fat. The amount of people I see who are over weight are in the minority. I'm not spending my time on a luxury hotel either. I work in a city, live in the suburbs are travel around a good bit. Something doesn't add up, unless there is a city somewhere where 98% of people are obese, driving the national numbers up! Has anyone else lived in Italy and seen this? Genuinely curious!

Italy: distribution of Body-Mass-Index 2022 | Statista

As of 2022, overweight and obese people constituted almost 47 percent of the overall population in Italy according to Body Mass Index (BMI).

fruitnutz · 18/08/2023 17:20

@Laquestamia Perhaps it's regional and you live in a skinnier area? It's possible Italians are mildly overweight and/or carry it differently so they don't look so large by comparison?

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 17:20

most of that 47% are overweight so won't necessarily look huge.

Precipice · 18/08/2023 17:23

If it's by BMI, some of those 47% might be muscled. But probably not most.

JudgeAnderson · 18/08/2023 17:24

Its more that Europeans have a better diet than British people , look healthier and slimmer, so even cheap clothes look better

That's hilarious. There are fat, scruffy, badly dressed people everywhere in Europe just the same as here.

OP the secret is to be rich.

otherwayup · 18/08/2023 17:28

God there's some appalling comments on this thread, just awful!

I think 'stupid skinny bitches' might win the prize though 😳

"Here" is in Europe.

I lived in Spain for a while, close to a tourist area popular with families, mainly German, Spanish and British. If you asked the Spanish how they identified the British just by looks, they would tell you, by sunburn and bad underwear and generally a bit untidy 🤷‍♀️

Maireas · 18/08/2023 17:37

Bad underwear?! 😄

TodayInahurry · 18/08/2023 17:38

I have been to Italy many times, Italian people are generally more concerned about how they dress than people in the UK. You have present a ‘good appearance’ I can’t spell the Italian words. They also buy good quality, no one looks good in Shein no matter how thin they are. The men also dress very well, certainly in the cities.

Husband likes going to opera we went in Rome, we were the only ones not dressed in Amarni with numerous diamonds.

I think thats a perception not a reality. Europeans are fat too.

fruitnutz · 18/08/2023 17:41

Nah, it's fat. Italy does not have millions of extremely muscled individuals. How would you explain 40% for women? Read the EU link, unfortunately everyone is fat these days.

Also, often badly dressed too. It's almost as if countries have varied populations!

Surely not😂

It's not all greed and laziness. Southern Europeans are smaller boned and rarely pear-or apple-shaped.

Add in naturally darker skin tones and that's a lot of natural advantage right there.

As someone with Southern med every woman in our family for the last 5 generations has been short big boned and pear shaped. 90% of the women in the village my family come from are short and round.

boobot1 · 18/08/2023 17:40

Being an EU stat, Brits are not included but Ireland is and young people (18-24) are the largest along with young Dutch. I should imagine we are just as fat if not more so than Ireland, perhaps we stand out to other nationalities because we became fatter earlier (few decades before) so the stereotype has stuck/confirmation bias.

Don't agree you need make up or even trousers and a nice blouse but surely by wearing decent clothes rather than stained too tight leggings it shows you have some self respect.

"Here" is in Europe.

Okay then, rest of Europe. Continental Europe. The EU. Schengen plus Norway and Switzerland. Whatever you prefer.

boobot1 · 18/08/2023 18:02

I travel a lot and see fat everywhere. Everyone is a lot bigger than they were even 10 years ago. When I was at school it was highly unusual for kids to be fat, now loads of the kids at my sons primary are fat.

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 18:20

There were definitely chubby dc at school when I was in there in the 80s, I was teased for being lanky whereas lots of girls are very thin now. I also remember all the mums looking more average as opposed to aiming for abs.

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 18:22

Interesting about the Dutch particularly as they are very tall compared to Italians/French. It's the one country I feel short in (I'm 5ft 9.5)

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 18:26

My point was if you are a healthy weight at 10 stone but tip into overweight at 10.5 stone it's not necessarily going to make a huge difference to a stranger.

ChevyCamaro · 18/08/2023 18:26

No way are Italians as fat as Brits, at least not anywhere I've been in Italy. Nor Spanish. I lose weight in Med countries, it's obvious why: better fruit and vegetables, more swimming. Where my DP is from (Med) they have tons of open air pools everywhere, and people go there all summer long. We have barely any facilities here like that, not that are affordable.
We also work more and that probably makes us depressed and comfort eat.

FindingMeno · 18/08/2023 18:55

We are also not used to spending money on sunny weather stuff as we get so little here.
