Glamorous European women on hols

Yumchips · 17/08/2023 19:56

Bit of a silly topic but in Greece at the moment on hols and I am seeing so many glamorous European women. Some or them have small children, some older and many families who have a nanny or someone there to support them with the kids. They are so glam looking, must have had some work done but it's fairly subtle but they are very very slim. Even the ones with babies that are 2/3 months old. They are dripping in designer clothes. Interestingly enough, I think their husbands seem to be very hands off with the kids, especially around meal times. I am sort of in awe but also wondering how they seem to put together and composed. Any thoughts other than the obvious, which is money.

@PollyCreo I think your labelling of an entire island's women as 'notoriously vain' and being unable to leave the house without an 'hour in make-up' was unnecessary.

PollyCreo · 22/08/2023 16:38

Do you live in Cyprus? I do and have many Cypriot friends - they wouldn't leave the house looking like a scruff 😅

I don't but it's my heritage...I wouldn't leave the house looking a scruff but I wouldn't go as far as saying I'm vain 😂

You know the Cypriot women are like "Look at me!’ They have the beautiful hair, the gorgeous figures and the pretty faces!

If someone said this about me I'd take it as a big compliment!

Fell off my chair laughing at 'stupid beautiful skinny bitches'.

Would you laugh if she had said "stupid fat bitches"?

No because that wouldn't have been funny...

Flyingalone · 23/08/2023 02:18

@mathanxiety what a nasty response.
Can't believe there are mature women out there who act so vile.

Flyingalone · 23/08/2023 02:19

@Comedycook not sure what you find as a compliment, but most women won't find 'vain' as complimentary towards them.
I bet you won't call anyone that to their face, for example to a colleague at a work event.

whenever I see a person (usually a woman) on holiday/ just generally around who is very put together, incredible figure etc etc I am not envious. because I know that I've enjoyed far more lie ins, lazy Sundays and gorgeous cakes. as far as I'm concerned if rather be happy and look a bit trampy+podgy than tired, hungry and worried about how I look.

What a very strange thing to assume. How on earth would you know?

Why would you care what someone looks like if you really are content with yourself?

Isn't it nice that we're all so different? I personally roll my eyes at sanctimonious virtue signalling. Variety is the spice of life.

zoopigi · 24/08/2023 06:55

@pollycreo I'm sure all your cypriot friends are pleased to know you find them vain and unable to leave the house without a shitton of makeup on.
I am cypriot, AND I live in cyprus, as is true everywhere else, there are many types of women that make up my race.
Some more put together, some less so. Some who go to the gym every spare hour of the day, some who don't.some who have weekly nail/hair/waxing appointments, some who don't.
Please don't tar a whole nation of women with one brush, especially one so nasty.
I am neither vain, nor do I need hours in front of a mirror to get ready before leaving the house. I am happy in my body, and if other people find me attractive or not that is their problem.

sandgrown · 24/08/2023 07:07

Watch any of the “real housewives “ series . They all have people to help prepare quality food which they just pick at. They have personal trainers. They also have “glam squads “ to get them ready for going out . Many of us could look amazing with all that help.

Part of the answer that's not money is an (unhealthy) obsession with looking 'nice' and put-together, especially in the women. It's women who won't leave the house without makeup, are always dressed at least semi-formally to go anywhere, and are always very conscious of what they look like to others. A lot of their focus is not on enjoying their life and having a nice holiday, but on being thought to look good to others. It's women for whom a woman who isn't made-up, depilated, manicured and pedicured, isn't 'taking care of herself' or looking 'presentable'. Basically, it's more rigid and more policed beauty standards.

I knew an Italian who straightened her hair before 'going out', and she claimed that that was normal in Italy.

The men might also look more 'put-together', with a smarter level of dress than the less 'glamorous' lot, but the demands for men are much lower and less rigid.

I think that's a very accurate insight.

math sorry I'm sure I've got the wton end of the stick here but are you saying it's funny to refer to women as skinny bitches?

MistyTrains2 · 26/08/2023 18:46

They don't have the same ultra processed diet that we do in the UK.

Yes, as that remark was clearly firmly tongue in cheek.

Augustus40 · 28/08/2023 08:49

I barely eat upf food. Very careful what I eat.

countdowntonap · 28/08/2023 15:38

There are lots of factors that lead to people looking glam on holiday.
e.g. if we’ve hired a car on holiday and arrive for lunch/a beach club straight out of an air conditioned car, we instantly look more glam and fresh than if we’d walked 20 mins to the beach in 35 degrees heat. Husband would also wear a shirt to lunch if driving, but not if we were walking for a mile.
Most people probably have moments of their holiday when they look glam and moments when they don’t (I’ve been known to have a sweat moustache!) but we only notice people when they look glam.

EffortlessDesmond · 28/08/2023 17:12

@Galiana the cost of your holiday items, as you've listed your brand preferences, instantly marks you out as well-to-do. My holiday wardrobe items and aesthetic choice is similar, but more UK High Street sourced!

Where does this statistics come from? As I said before, I live in Italy and half of the people I see each day are not fat. The amount of people I see who are over weight are in the minority. I'm not spending my time on a luxury hotel either. I work in a city, live in the suburbs are travel around a good bit. Something doesn't add up, unless there is a city somewhere where 98% of people are obese, driving the national numbers up! Has anyone else lived in Italy and seen this? Genuinely curious!
