Glamorous European women on hols

Yumchips · 17/08/2023 19:56

Bit of a silly topic but in Greece at the moment on hols and I am seeing so many glamorous European women. Some or them have small children, some older and many families who have a nanny or someone there to support them with the kids. They are so glam looking, must have had some work done but it's fairly subtle but they are very very slim. Even the ones with babies that are 2/3 months old. They are dripping in designer clothes. Interestingly enough, I think their husbands seem to be very hands off with the kids, especially around meal times. I am sort of in awe but also wondering how they seem to put together and composed. Any thoughts other than the obvious, which is money.

@fruitnutz People assumed you were French because you were in France.

No it didn't happen to Dh or my kids.
My maiden name was French sounding ( spelt differently) so maybe I have some French blood in me😀

inloveandmarried · 18/08/2023 19:49

I remember feeling this back in the 1980's. I was slim, pretty back then but still felt completely inadequate next to the Italian and Greek beauties on the beach.

I live in Italy and this just doesn't ring true. Where is this data from?

Well this is just one of many links. I'm sure you can Google more.

Honeychickpea · 18/08/2023 20:00

Confirmation bias. You notice the glamorous ones, you don't notice the ordinary looking ones.

nameitagain · 18/08/2023 20:13

@Precipice A lot of their focus is not on enjoying their life and having a nice holiday, but on being thought to look good to others.
What tosh. I enjoy pampering myself and making myself look nice. I don't fret or squirm or do whatever you seem to think women who make an effort do. I think there is a lot more time wasting angst ridden fretting that happens when you look a bit shit and nothing fits and you try to dress to cover bits up rather than wearing clothes that make you happy.
You have a very skewed view of the life of the well groomed.

It's so depressing that we still can't separate a woman's value or worth from her physical appearance.

I don't owe it to anyone to be pretty or glamorous or slim. My body is for me, and I will dress it and look after it as I see fit.

We should be looking at the pressures that drive people to spend countless hours and pounds on pointless personal grooming, rather than praising individuals and cultures that conform to this.

What is pointless to you is not pointless to me. I love grooming. I find it meditative to apply makeup and do my hair. It's my quiet private time. I love the artistry. I find it immensely pleasing. Funny that you talk about wishing women were appreciated for the values you value. How about you just accept that we all appreciate different things. You may like classical music. I may think it's dull and moronic. You may like slapstick. I may find it basic and boring. What you value is just that.

Oh bog off. You live your life and let others live theirs.

"Here" is in Europe.

Okay then, rest of Europe. Continental Europe. The EU. Schengen plus Norway and Switzerland. Whatever you prefer.

Well, "European" refers to something to do with the European continent= Europe. There are 44 countries in Europe. That's it, no more, no less :-)

I'm certain people knew exactly what I meant in the context. But I understand the lure of pedantry, I'm guilty of that myself.

But to me, popping to the shop in leggings or wellies or whatever is more real. Who can be bothered to slap on a full face of make up and dress up just for a 5 min pop to the shop?

Does it take longer to put on jeans than leggings?

Nannies are for whatever the contract between nanny and employer agreed on.

You'd have been walking around your house in them already

They are often ordinary though-i dont find them overly glamourous. Every day i see normal, perfectly pleasant looking women in jeans and minimal makeup, nothing overly glam on the whole.

Where I live i see/know lots of Italian women colleagues, waitresses, shop assistants, receptionists: ordinary women, not overly glam. Low key fashion, low maintenance.

I just find them all very slim, generally.

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 21:18

What are people classing as well groomed? I find Italian style can be quite flashy & the make up pretty heavy for example.

Who are you to tell me?

I will have my nanny whilst husband and I go out for a nice dinner by the beach and enjoy cocktails watching the sunset.

In the day time I will go out and have a long yoga session at a nice studio.

Some mornings I'll go for coffee with the husband and enjoy people watching and laze around.

It's a 2 week holiday. I spend a lot of quality time with my kid still. And at home as well. I'm very happy with my life and my child with his.

It was easy to spot a Brit from 50 paces in Heraklion, without exception, they'd be very podgy, badly dressed in cheap, squeezed into too small-for-them brightly patterned clothes, lots of tattoos.

Without exception? You are seriously claiming that all Brits fit that description? Or just the subset of Brits who happen to visit Heraklion perhaps? I'd better make sure I change my wardrobe and get some tattoos before I go then.

One of my proudest moments was in Santorini when a woman greeted me in French assuming I was indeed French and not English.

I totally get that. I used to work for a startup based in Paris and would have a panic shop before going over there. Funny thing is that as an American I was exotic to some of them. One of them became my DP and he still gushes that his kid will have an American accent (err he won't, we live in the U.K. lol)

BaronessBomburst · 19/08/2023 09:01

Try Croatia, OP. The locals and (mainly German) tourists here all seem to be on the plumper side, whilst the younger women dress like pornstars. I feel positively slim and elegant by comparison.

I’m in a Mediterranean resort at the moment, and the Brits are easy to spot because of their ill-fitting, often cheap-looking clothes that reveal as much of their over-large bodies and excessive tattoos as possible.
The locals here aren’t all slim by any means, but they tend to cover up more instead of showing cleavage and legs, and mostly wear plain-colored clothes or stripes instead of garish stuff with pictures on.

ASuitableName · 19/08/2023 09:20

I fully agree with everything that @LefkaOri has said.

MrHopsPortal · 19/08/2023 10:18

We are in France at the moment - campsite with mix of French, Dutch, Belgian and British - very middle class tbh and I've commented to DH that I haven't seen a single overweight child in the pool. Majority of adults slim or maybe slightly overweight when seen in swimwear even though I wouldn't say anyone was especially glamourous.

Then we did a day visit to a local zoo - vast majority of visitors French and (I assume) locals - as DH said, the trend for loads of crap tattoos seems to have spread to France and the vast majority of people were overweight/ obese.

It's location. Although I could spot a Brit a mile off at the more touristy places we visited.

ParisDispatches · 19/08/2023 11:02

This thread is v interesting. I recently started a similar one on style & beauty having spent a month in Paris.

My observations were met with a lot of scepticism & it seemed people were getting irritated..

I travel a lot & I think fashion or style plays a major role to be honest. In countries like France, Italy, Spain people seem to have a better knack for dressing more elegantly in the heat.

I always try to buy things like dreses, sandals & leather bags when I'm away.

I don't go to resorts as they don't appeal but I have been to places such as Malaga old town & although there's a mix of nationalities it's very easy to spot some British tourists.

Peverellshire · 19/08/2023 11:11

I can dress stylishly in heat but can’t nail a cool or seasonal look, love cotton dresses & get more creative. Must have been not a lumpen Brit in former life…:)
