Inspired by another thread. Of all the subjects someone can bring up in conversation what's the one that makes you want to roll your eyes so far back you can see behind your brain?

Light-hearted of course Grin

Their teeth and dental appointments,
also hate when you meet up with people and they tell u long stories about their work colleagues ( that you don’t know or work with and couldn’t give a jot about ).

viviscool · 16/08/2023 14:23

food
diets

Aurora2023 · 16/08/2023 14:24

In complete reverse of this - I like to deliberately bore my daughter to see how long it takes for her to glaze over.

Last night I told her an in-depth tale of how long the blanket I'm knitting for an impending baby arrival will take if I do x amount of rows per night. I even added that when I go on holiday I'll have to make up those nightly rows when I get home and probably would have to have a later bedtime than usual.

To give her her credit she lasted almost 10 minutes of glazing before she said FFs mum SHUT UP.

Bless her. 😂

An organ recital - aka ailments.
Politics - especially Brexit.
The intimate doings of someone's distant relatives that l have never met.
Someone else's family tree.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 16/08/2023 14:27

Dh's family are fucking obsessed with real ale, and the beer talk is neverending. Even if I wasn't teetotal it would drive me nuts.

RicherThanYews · 16/08/2023 14:33

It's definitely the storyteller/speaker over the topic. For instance, my friend Patricia happens to be vegan and never mentions it but we discussed recipes and she mentioned a new one that she had tried, quick summary within 12 words or less and I said I'd love to try it, great.
My cousin Randolph however is also vegan and likes to tell me when it is completely irrelevant. For instance, I took some medication for a health condition at 2pm with some water and he said he couldn't take it as it might have been tested on animals 🙄 then he points out that there is milk in my coffee and he couldn't have that as he is vegan. Then he asks what I'm making for dinner tonight and I'll say mushroom risotto, he will point out that he can't have that as it contains butter/dairy/whatever. It's the pointless shoehorning. Patricia is not like that! Randolph, be more like Patricia as you are boring the shit out of everyone and no I don't want to switch to a plant based meal replacement liquid diet 🤬

And people who want to tell you how manynpeople they've had sex with.

You remember Biffy and Todger and that bloke with dandruff who played the drums in that band we used to be in and had a gig at the Dog and Squirrel in about 1978. Well, Biffy's sister, oh now whatshername, it's on the tip of my tongue, she had a fling with That Bloke's brother but I promised never to tell anybody, and then she emigrated to Australia, you'll never guess what, I saw her cousin in the Co-Op last week.

MsAGog · 16/08/2023 14:43

Holidays
Politics
Babies and young children
Weaning journey etc
Tedious anecdotes with people who I don't know
Health woes

The thing is, some of these things CAN be interesting but people will just drone on despite the other conversation participant being basically unresponsive

And some people are charismatic and engaging and can make anything interesting- my favourite type of people haha

UnfunnyJester · 16/08/2023 14:44

Their minor ailments

MsJuniper · 16/08/2023 14:47

Petrol prices.

I like talking about politics and current affairs. Love hearing about people's children. No problem with dreams either.

I find it's more about whether the speaker is animated. It's so interesting hearing about others' passions in life, even if they don't match mine.

LaMaG · 16/08/2023 14:48

The sequence of events regarding an illness or diagnosis.... starting from when they first had an issue and ending with treatment. Includes times of appointments, waiting times, parking troubles, blood tests etc.

Sunnysideup999 · 16/08/2023 14:51

Skiing (has to be top of the list)
Golf
cricket
in fact all sport except maybe tennis
their house renovations
their garden
cars
how long they have been alcohol/ cigarette/ sugar free
their kids achievements
their ailments / hormones/ bad back/ grey hair
their holidays (unless something dramatic happened)
their neighbours
their gym routine
their proposal/ baby shower/ wedding

reading this back - I think I’m only good for a gossip/ bitching session or a book/ movie/ restaurant/ fashion/ activity recommendation. Don’t come at me with anything else as I don’t really care.

Savagepuma · 16/08/2023 14:53

Stories about other people I don't know

RicherThanYews · 16/08/2023 14:53

Organ recital 😂😂 that's my Nan. Let's say I broke my foot (3 years ago), my mum phoned her to tell her I broke my foot, I wasn't arsed about telling her because who gives a fuck. Nan phones me and the chat goes like this:

"Hiya love it's Nanny. Mam said you broke your foot? Oh how awful for you, is it in a cast? How did you do it? Will it be for long? Well my knee is awfully painful and I can't walk properly or leave the house, I've only been to town 3 times this week and I haven't eaten a thing, I've got no appetite at all except for those apple pies you bought me but I haven't eaten a thing and I've lost lots of weight but oh gosh my knee really is terrible and the doctors don't care see, that Dr Jones is a wicked woman who told me it was just old age but oh it's awful and I can't do anything but me and Jan are going to Spain for a month".

Me: waits silently on the line for a gap in the traffic so I can speak.

She really is very funny though.

Freshair1 · 16/08/2023 14:57

Any time someone moans about the ailments they have. Maybe, Doris, you should make an effort to do something with your day instead of hosting a neverending pity party where all suggestions to boost your wellbeing are burnt on a bonfire.

Cattenberg · 16/08/2023 14:58

Work. I sometimes struggle to stay awake in work meetings. I wonder if the managers who spend most of their time in meetings ever get anything done?

I like hearing about people’s travels to interesting places. I’m less interested in your week spent on a sun lounger in Benidorm, including what you had for dinner and which cocktails you drank.

Cattenberg · 16/08/2023 15:03

Also pensions. I should worry that I’ll end up penniless in my old age, because I zone out every time this subject is mentioned.

thecatsthecats · 16/08/2023 15:08
  • Which driving route did you take to get here?

I followed the satnav like any normal person.

  • Remember your GP when you were eight? She was married to your piano tutor? They lived above the Toy Shop? No, not the toy shop near the roundabout, near the old Coop? The one that's now a Sainsbury's. Well, she's just got a dog.

Well, great. I don't even care that they have a dog, let alone the rest of it.

  • You need to do X in the house to get the toilet to work.

Mum, I grew up in this house. I have lived in this house a far greater proportion of my life than you have. Did you think I've forgotten how to work it?More importantly why haven't you sodding fixed it?

And people who want to tell you how manynpeople they've had sex with.

Worse is when they tell you about the sex they’ve had with many people..

Pookie2022 · 16/08/2023 15:13

Princess Diana?

LaMaG · 16/08/2023 15:19

My (by text) - want to meet up for coffee or a walk? I could do Thursday evening around 7

My friend S: Emma has swimming at 5 and finishes at 6 but it's a 30 minute drive and then I have to drop Paul to soccer for 8.30 and get dinner in between so it's very tight, but sometimes Emma's friend Kate can bring her but her Dad's car is in for service, he got a brand new audi only last year and they've had nothing but trouble it's the second time it's gone in for repairs but it's OK cos Emma's mum Liz has a car too but she has been really struggling with a chronic stomach problem and regularly has hospital appointments and the consultant who specialises in it works out of hospital name which is really unlucky as its an hour each way for her, there used to be a consultant at the local hospital but he retired last year, do you remember the guy who worked with Charlotte's mum when she had the stomach thing, well anyway I need to check if liz is around on Thurs to bring Emma home from swimming and if she can I can meet you but if she can't we will have to do another day. Maybe Friday but Tom works late.......

Repeat for 7 days.

Me: ok, let me know date and time that might work.

(She seriously sent me a 6min voice note recently like this.)

Men in the war who didn't get a medal for a particular campaign, even though everyone else did. Don't know the specifics as I drifted off.
