What's the most BORING subject people can bring up?

Inspired by another thread. Of all the subjects someone can bring up in conversation what's the one that makes you want to roll your eyes so far back you can see behind your brain?

Light-hearted of course Grin

OP posts:

Which route someone took to get to where they are.

Which route someone took to get to where they are.

...... and what hold ups there were and how many were driving like idiots and who cut them up at some point en route and whether or not there must have been an accident somewhere and why do they work on the motorways on busy days and on and on

Definitely this!

I do have numerous medical appointments as it's a life long thing so just absorbed into the mundane routine category, so maybe that's skewed my view a bit, but I hate hearing about appointments and don't like people asking me about mine either. Or expecting me to remember their appointments. Ain't gonna happen.

Sorry, obviously didn't mean you, it's extremely consuming when it's you. I had days of appointments earlier in the year for two issues (shall I tell you about them?! 😂). It was my fil, endless investigations for something, no resolution for years, he was very dramatic about it and it ended up being the sole topic of conversation, no matter how hard we tried to steer him to a different one. He was retired and literally did nothing but go to his appointments. I felt very sorry for him, but it was hard going.

I had this yesterday in the car. Friend asked if I watched Made in Chelsea. She knows I do not. Even though they probably went to good school they can barely string a sentence together. I don't like it. She then went in to a long chat about what X did and why Z was not happy etc etc. Another friend does this with Coronation Street. "Did you watch Corrie?" "Nope". "Well you won't guess what happened - X only went and ........ Y was furious". Fascinating.....Not.

People who bore on about how much they hate pronouns and have to bring it up All. The. Time.
It doesn't effect you if someone wants to be referred to as she/him/they/them, for goodness sake.
Also, pronouns have been useful in Emails at work when someone has a unisex name (Alex/Sam/Chris), and when meeting them in the office, I know whether to look out for a man/woman or someone who doesn't identify as either.

I'm aware I'm one of the rare ones on MN who think like this though.

This.

Fortunately this isn't a subject that ever comes up with people I know in real life other than a brief mention and moving on. I can easily ignore the people banging on about it on MN.

Stories about other people I don't know

So true! MIL does this to me constantly. And she KNOWS I have no idea who she's talking about.

Someone's endless opinions of the spouse they divorced over 30 years ago.

My next door neighbour keeps talking back to my DH's ex. he was married 18 months, they divorced in 2002 and we met in 2004 and got married 2005. It's really odd. He will say things like ' Just reminding you [x] was married before or 'remember you are the second wife'.

Last time he did I said ' Reminding you that they divorced 22 years ago and we have been married 18'. He got huffy.

Thing is - HE has been married and divorced and re-married as has his current wife!

Fucking wierd.

I only see one particular relative every two years, but it’s like Groundhog Day. Every time, she’s telling everyone within earshot that she’s just resigned from a job after the boss did something to annoy her or took her for granted. Every time, the boss begged her to stay and she told him it was too late. Every time, her colleagues wept at the news she was leaving and pleaded with her to change her mind. Really, Becky?

Esgaroth · 17/08/2023 11:51

I like most light chat as long as it doesn't go into too much detail for too long. I like hearing about people's lives, including their kids, pets, holidays, work, political views (I mean there's not much left once you remove most of someone's day to day life as potential topics). Don't even mind the odd dream recital.

I think my SIL took it a bit far the other day when she started describing in excruciating detail the layout of her friend's house and furniture arrangements and how she would do it differently. There were diagrams, so many diagrams.

@Merapi don't forget where the satnav wants to take you and why it's wrong, or possibly right, and the ridiculous diversion routes for roadworks, and how long it takes to sit in various queues 😴

I'm really bored now...😂

We have recently moved to a new house and several visits to the tip have been required. My husband treated my mother to a blow by blow account of how the new tip worked in comparison with the old one. Riveting.. .🥱

MoonsHaunted · 17/08/2023 15:27

Sorry if it’s already been mentioned as I skim-read parts of the thread but this discussion reminds of a quote from It’s Always Sunny:

”I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.”

Reality TV shows, the soaps. Gossiping and going on about their boring holidays unless they are adventurous like Bear Grylis and Steve backshall and actually have something interesting to say and show

I once got stuck at a table at a wedding reception with someone 'in computers' who spent the entire 5 or 6 courses (including the speeches) reagling us with tales of how the new thing in gaming would be 'grey gamers' and that all people over the age of 50 would soon be as obsessed with gaming as everybody else, and would all be spending their retirement playing computer games. And on and on and on.
Thank God I had an endless supply of food and drink to keep me going...
