Look at this massive spider (pic warning)

DS overheard my sudden "Oh My God!" from the bathroom and responded, in a daunted voice, "What did you say Oh My God for, Mum?"

This is what.

(Coin added later, cautiously, with tongs).

I usually decant spiders with a piece of card and a glass but I feel like I need a sturdier kit 😱

@WinterWitchy

Ages ago I did my house before kitty came and it absolutely stink of it first months.

Where do you spray and does it actually kill spiders?

What spider did you get bitten with.

Packageholiday · 15/08/2023 21:56

@WinterWitchy

Also what spider bit you.

UnicornHo · 15/08/2023 21:57

We had one in my daughter’s bedroom last night. That unicorn is almost as big as me, the spider was massive. Too much for me but I faked it while the kids were around 🫨

Why do I look at these threads...? Whyyyyy?

Have you rung 999 OP?!

That IS big (I'm Australian)

Caswallonthefox · 15/08/2023 22:16

I'm jealous! I have cellar spiders and false widow spiders and baby spiders if some sort but I've never had a house spider in my flat.

@Microwaveexpert
😮

oh my God!!!!

niclw · 15/08/2023 22:22

I frequently get spiders of this size. I've seen them scurrying along the floor at night with the lights off. I can't stand spiders but i was getting more and more of this type as well as other types. My friend recommended spider spray so I might try that this September.

3luckystars · 15/08/2023 22:26

One night I was reading a bedtime story and a spider ran into the bedroom, it was so big I actually thought it was a mouse.

Well I SCREAMED, (I had a huge interview the following day and was trying to get them to sleep peacefully) so the little one jumped up and said ‘what ?’

And I said ‘oh I just spilled tea on my leg.’ I knew I had to stay calm because if she saw it, there would be no sleep for any of us.

It amazes me that the scream was out of my mouth before I could even think. It was involuntary.

It was a false widow. I spray it around skirtings, windows, doors, inside cupboards, along the sides of the baths and showers where they meet the floor and the outsides of the doors and windows on the ground level as a I can’t reach the upstairs ones. Basically everywhere.

It was my friend who told me about it. The first time I used it after we moved house I found literally dozens of massive dead spiders.

cuckyplunt · 16/08/2023 07:21

Oh good, another “let’s all make jokes about killing innocent creatures thread” These always make my day!

ThomasHardyPerennial · 16/08/2023 07:23

I would never kill them, just try and get the courage to put them outside!

PimpMyFridge · 16/08/2023 07:26

That's a beautiful spider, your classic bath spider.
No need to talk about killing it, it just wants to get on with it's day.

weathervane1 · 16/08/2023 07:33

We love spiders in our house. We have a few and each has is own territory. They're brilliant at keeping the flies down and strangely cute to watch. It's a shame that the fears of others over spiders gets so deeply entrenched into our psychies (spelling???).

booomshackalack · 16/08/2023 07:36

Those spider catcher grabber tool things are your friend OP. Pre-cat we got loads of these guys in our house this time of year and the catcher got them easily and safely back outside.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 16/08/2023 07:44

I've ignored the cellar spiders recently, and they do a great job managing the big ones. Not a surprise that the cellar spiders love my cellar 😀

Caswallonthefox · 16/08/2023 23:39

About 20 minutes ago, I heard a shriek. Then I got a message through Alexa. " oh my god mum, there's a massive spider, come and kill it."
I got a glass and a piece of cardboard, trekked upstairs and there it sat in the middle of his furry white rug. I did the biz and he then wanted to take a picture.
The 'massive' house spider is now relocated to my boiler cupboard, which is next to my front door, 2 floors away from him.

Same here!

I had to google to see how the size compares with huntsmen (the giant house spiders are smaller, but plenty big enough!). Biggest spider I've seen in person (except a bird-eating one at the museum long ago) was a huntsman in Queensland. Never seen any that big in Victoria.

OtterInDisgrace · 17/08/2023 02:07

It’s the size of a 20 pence piece, ffs.

LauderSyme · 17/08/2023 22:32

@cuckyplunt Erm... no? I literally talked about decanting it, not killing it. I never kill spiders; they have as much right to exist as I do and I think they're pretty cool. This one was just unexpectedly sizable.

I left a loo roll ladder so it could climb up and out overnight, but in the morning it was still there, so I relocated it to the garden with a placemat and a Pyrex bowl (ie. the said sturdier kit!)

I have one like this who lives with me & the kids. She trots merrily about the kitchen & dining room. I’ll try to upload a picture.

MuckyPlucky · 17/08/2023 22:42

Here she is! She’s a sweetheart really.

notprincehamlet · 17/08/2023 22:49

Are you sure it's a large spider and not two horses standing next to each other?
